Round #2, Pick #68:
Stephon Marbury
I'm really going for the home run with this pick. Stephon ****ing Starbury "Best point guard in the NBA" Marbury is an elite talent, probably top five in the NBA for most of his career. Unfortunately, he has been the victim of circumstance, as most of his teams were bad, badly coached, and/or ravaged by injuries. Marbury is a sick ball handler with a lethal crossover, has a good mid range jumper, can get to the paint at will, and has been a consistent 20/8 guy most of his career, right around 20 PER, except the last two years with New York when the team was just grotesquely dysfunctional (mostly not his fault). He even plays good defense when he wants to.
This format is great for Marbury because I get him at age 24 when his attitude was still salvageable if he had been fortunate enough to land on a good team (not the Knicks ldo) with a coach who was actually interested in having him play to his potential. Marbury will spend his career on my team trying in vain to get into Charles' Fave Five, and this will be more than enough motivation to keep Marbury in line and giving 100% effort. In all seriousness though, we aren't doing an 82-game regular season, it's basically just one big playoffs, so Marbury will definitely not be half-assing on the court when everything is at stake.
In conclusion, I'm taking a player late in the second round who would have been a surefire first round pick if he hadn't got traded to the Knicks or Nets and had better opportunities to showcase his sick skills. On my team, he will not have to be the primary scoring option. He can cut down on jump shots (ideally no threes), driive to the basket more often and either go for the layup, find the Chuckster in deep position, or kick it out to an open shooter (I already have a few in mind).
My team so far:
F - Charles Barkley
G - Stephon Marbury
