I think compliments are the nut worst indicator of a good outfit (unless you do it on Styleforum where people can really appreciate the assembly of an outfit - may it be S&D or MC).

Clothing shouldn't really be something that attracts compliments on an outfit by outfit basis. James Bond wouldn't be complimented on a single suit he is wearing but rather on his style.
If you are getting complimented for your consistency of good outfits, it's a great compliment. If you are getting complimented for a single outfit - or even worse a single piece of clothing -, you shouldn't interpret much into it.

EiE's style would look out of place where Custer's pictures are set. They look outdoorsy whereas as EiE looks made for a bar downtown. Also EiE's clothing is more versatile. Everyone here is going to get more use out of a simple dark v-neck sweater than that what I assume is an expensive blue Ralph Lauren sweater. I think the outfits in Custers pics look better and are more interesting but in the real world I try for EiE's style. Which of the two styles women prefer I am not qualified to say.

great comparison of "designer" shirts vs cheap ones like hanes.

EIE, this thread isn't about attracting girls. It's about style/fashion. If it was the former, watches would never be discussed here.

Spurious, the percentage of people in your life that see you enough to compliment a style is very small. Individual compliments can be useful sometimes. If a girl compliments you it's useful because it tells you she wants your penis around different parts of her body.
01-05-2014 , 03:46 PM
I would also argue EIE that your style isn't optimal for picking up girls either. In both work/lounge setting a suit would do much better. I was just confirming that your outfit is more in place then the two others in those settings.

edit: just saw you said this nvm.

edit 2: Wait you are in a European country right? I imagine the styles I posted are not at all popular in those. College girls in america would eat those styles up though.

I wish this were true. Definitely not as simple as that.

Yeah I agree.

yeah obviously hyperbole.

nothing wrong with not being dressed perfectly 24/7 imo (although it's probably optimal).

i'm pretty big on being comfortable and went all through HS/college/law school wearing sweatpants, basketball shorts, hoodies, baseball hat etc; could probably count on my fingers how many times i wore jeans or dress pants to school.

i made sure to always be the best dressed at more formal events and weekends, though. almost always overdid it with suits, blazers, etc when other people were still stuck in "sweet 16 mode" (i.e., a dress shirt that fits like a parachute tucked in to crappy cardboard dress pants and leprechaun buckle shoes)... if you have a reputation as a good dresser and someone who has their **** together, nobody is going to judge you for wearing sweaptants to class or whatever.

again, not saying its optimal, you would obviously be much better off always looking your best. just pick and choose your moments.

^Bingo

Agreed. I follow this type of thinking. I think it is good to switch up once in awhile once you've established you dress well. I'll wear hoodies or t-shirts to the bar once in awhile.

Wearing a hoodie and watch right now

Feeling good

@ Custer: Yes, I'm from The Netherlands. Outside of Amsterdam and maybe some other big cities it's extremely rare to come across well executed fashion styles.

Luxires order arrived today. It's a standard Oxford button down. The fit is well, a bit too baggy in the bicep area though. I'm going to order in batches of 3 shirts to maximize fit.

take it to a tailor. my arms are usually very slightly too baggy too so i just get my sleeves rebuttoned so that the arm closes tighter.
01-06-2014 , 01:17 PM
Why not just make your arm measurements smaller?

fellas,

say someone has this shirt:

http://www.jcrew.com/mens_special_si...7208/07208.jsp

and would be wearing a sweater with standard dark jeans. what's the optimum sweater color?
01-06-2014 , 09:04 PM
not a fan of shirt. Wouldnt wear it under a sweater if I had it. Pattern is too wide for a sweater, would look silly imo.

In a nut shell it's the mid gray pants, navy blazer look.

I can second Luxire fwiw.

If I was you, I would start by buying a brown pair of cap toe oxfords (balmorals in the US) and a brown pair of suede oxfords (cap toe as well probably).

Buy ten shirts, like 5 blue, 2-3 white blue striped and 2-3 white. The more often you wear casual, the more oxford shirts you should/can have in there.

For pants I'd go with 2 chinos (standard beige and khaki) and one pair of mid gray wool pants.

I usually wear a shirt and a sweater, so I'd recommend 4-5 sweaters (have a mix of cotton, wool and, if you feel like it, cashmere).
Colors I'd go with navy, burgundy, grey and two others of your choice.

I probably missed something, but that'd be my start.
If you dont want to wear sweaters but rather wear a sports coat on top, replace the sweaters by two/three sport coats (one of them should be a navy blazer).
Quoting this again because it's such a helpful post for starters.

Let's say I collected most/all of these items, what would generally be a good way to continue?

For shoes I was thinking boots, black, burgundy (all oxfords);
For shirts more of the same and a couple of pink shirts;
For pants more shades of brown/khaki, grey, white, redish/greenish;
For sweaters more of the same/slightly different shades, some crew necks;
For sport coats the first 3 should be enough for a long time.

Details: for socks a ****load of dark blue/dark navy and grey should be sufficient. Though I wouldn't know what colours would be good to expand in this area. For watches 2 or 3 different ones would be nice (though I also am not sure what the best kind of watches would be). Underwear is also something I'm clueless about.

I was also thinking of buying 1 navy suit so you can really dress up for a couple of events throughout the year but maybe it's better to postpone that plan a bit.

Not sure if serious.

Watches are very useful in attractive women.
01-07-2014 , 09:52 AM
Expanding is now depending on your own preferences.
You should definitely own a suit, ideally two. The first one navy, the second one dark grey (second navy would be fine, although I wouldn't recommend it).

Shirts:
I own several pink shirts, red white striped, red white gingham, pale blue, white and blue and white striped in several different clothes, different collar and cuff styles (french or barrel cuff).

Pants:
Really depends on what you want to go for. If you want to expand your chino selection, start adding some different colors and different shades of khaki/beige.
If you want to get some more wool pants, get mid grey and light grey ones in flannel, worsted wool types, tropical wool (for the summer), tweed and what not. This is really up to you.

Sweaters:
It really depends on what you want to go for. You can go a bit more exotic color-wise or you can stay conservative but add higher quality fabrics (like cashmere).

Shoes:
I really cant give advice on that. I am addicted to shoes and got more pair of shoes than a student my age would need.
Boots are good for the winter, different cap toes in different shades of brown as well. Wingtip, half brogue, loafers, etc.

Not for their aesthetics though. It's for the price tag you paid.

There are also brands I watches 99% of girls have never heard of that are really nice peices.

There are also cheap ****ty watches that dumb girls may think are nice.

Girls don't know **** about watches unless you can either tell them it's a Rolex or some fashion brand, or you leave the price tag on.

And watches are bought purely for personal tastes, or at least should be. Which was the point I was making. The attract girls factor is almost non existent(by far the smallest of all items you wear)

I am partial to loud socks. Places I get socks are Uniqlo and topman.

Ties from tie bar.

Underwear is whatever.

Watches depends on your range and the type of band you want.

Pair of cords for fall/winter is good too. Dark brown or green.

Jackets are prob good as an alternative to full suits.
