You should start with a navy coat, then charcoal and go from there.
In the beginning, people should really stick to navy and grey/khaki for most of their items.
Navy more for the upper body, khaki and beige for pants and grey mostly pants as well (although a grey sweater is versatile with a jeans for example).
A lot of items look cool by themselves, but they dont go with anything else.
Ridiculous colored shoes come to mind. A pair of green shoes can look great, but honestly, there arent many outfits where green is the optimal shoe color.
This, you should prepare a little more when you go out shopping, make a list of things you want, start with staple items of clothing/colours. The coat you bought is one that should of been bought further a long down the road when your wardrobe is already looking reasonable. I'm not a fan but I think you can pull it off.

I dont really understand why it wouldnt be versitale. It's agree it is not possible to wear on those chino's, but I am now just googling some pictures and there are a lot of different looks that look good with it.
What should I definitely not wear under this coat?
this article shuold help you, camel is just less versatile than colours like navy/grey. The different looks youre seeing should come once you already have the most versatile items (navy blazer, grey trousers) etc. Imo.

wrt article i linked, i think some of there recommendations are hit and miss, some i absolutely hate but they tend to try and cover everything from casual to formal so use your best judgement. I think the overall written content is good though.
