It's probably the 'optimal' style for a 20 year old if the main objective is to attract women (and to look good in general).

Just skimmed through the OP of that topic. It might give a bad impression because 95%+ of the pictures posted are lolbad. I mean more like:

Nice shoes (AEs are a good starting point)
Slacks or chinos
Dress shirt
Sport coat/sweater over shirt if appropriate
Nice watch (50mm bezeled out doesn't count)

As scrolls pointed out.

Wow that OP is pretty bad. It's a good thread though and it's definitely influenced my style (browse it every couple days).

Enough,

As Spurious pointed out, you'll definitely make dumb purchases in the beginning so just take it slow as you learn what you like and figure out your fits--don't try to revamp your entire closet at once. Start with basics and branch out as you build up a good base wardrobe. By basics I mean pants (charcoal, navy), dress shirts (blues and whites), brown dress shoes, etc etc.

If you fit OTR clothes pretty well you can go that direction, if not you're best off having your clothes MTM. Luxire.com is pretty awesome in that respect. I'd guess 80% of my dress shirts are from them and I'm slowly adding their pants as well. Their website is awful but check out the SF Luxire thread for help. Once you get your measurements dialed in it's so easy to order new shirts/pants that fit perfectly. There are plenty of other online MTM sites but of the three I've tried Luxire is far and away the highest quality for the best price (hell, their shirts are higher quality than some $200+ shirts I've tried on IRL).

How is that casual? Most of those pictures are suits and ties.

whnay's good taste is definitely the opposite of smart casual, it's closer to conservative business dress than casual.
In a nut shell it's the mid gray pants, navy blazer look.

I can second Luxire fwiw.

If I was you, I would start by buying a brown pair of cap toe oxfords (balmorals in the US) and a brown pair of suede oxfords (cap toe as well probably).

Buy ten shirts, like 5 blue, 2-3 white blue striped and 2-3 white. The more often you wear casual, the more oxford shirts you should/can have in there.

For pants I'd go with 2 chinos (standard beige and khaki) and one pair of mid gray wool pants.

I usually wear a shirt and a sweater, so I'd recommend 4-5 sweaters (have a mix of cotton, wool and, if you feel like it, cashmere).
Colors I'd go with navy, burgundy, grey and two others of your choice.

I probably missed something, but that'd be my start.
If you dont want to wear sweaters but rather wear a sports coat on top, replace the sweaters by two/three sport coats (one of them should be a navy blazer).

That's the most helpful post I got so far on the Internet concerning my beginning wardrobe. Thanks a ton.

By the way, I'm from The Netherlands, so certain brands are not easy/cheap to get.

What kind of collar would you recommend for the shirts and what kind of sweater?

Either he changed the link or I'm losing my mind. Swear it was the MC Casual thread he originally linked to and is what my comment was referring to.

Enough,

Collars are mostly personal preference IMO (as long as you don't do anything too absurd). For example, I only own 2-3 button down collars as I'm not really a fan. Some people are the opposite and don't like spread collars. A decent percentage of that SF Luxire thread is spent discussing collars so if you're that concerned just get reading (even if you're not interested in their clothes). I've learned more about collars reading that thread than I've ever cared to know.

Are any of you guys fans of denim jackets? What should you wear them with?

The link was definitely changed, I clicked a different one when I clicked earlier. Confirmed you are not insane.

I only like button down collars on casual shirts (mostly worn untucked etc) though I did pair them with a knit tie and tan suit this summer and it worked pretty well.

Got this Bering watch for $250. Pics don't really do it justice, it has sort of a classic vintage look to it I think. It was the only one that fit my small wrist and didn't look futuristic. Nice stop watch, and other random things still learning. Saphire crystal glass. I'm not sure how good this watch is. Thoughts?

12-10-2013 , 03:04 AM
Im guessing its quatz? I think you can do a lot better for around that pricetage. Also unless I am missing something its cheaper on their website:

http://beringtime.de/us/collection/c...10540-404.html

Weird how they dont list case diameter.

I am about to pull the trigger on an orient, automatic, saphire crystal, deployment clasp. Its on sale for 350 right now(retail 465). Been eyeing it for a long time. I mean watch "purists" and people who are dumb are like lol its not swiss made it sucks. But I dont care what they think.

Pics:

Probably going to buy a lighter brown band to put on it though.
12-10-2013 , 03:09 AM
Thanks for the link and info CC. I got it at the casino so it was marked up slightly, I used some of my comp dollars to buy it so it only cost 50 bucks.

It says sapphire crystal on the back. I like that Orient watch, the white looks do damn good imho. Your defiantly has more bling, mine is plain. White Is clean and classic.
12-10-2013 , 03:12 AM
I mean in the end if you like it you like it. I mean some people (*cough* gus *cough*) will laugh at anything thing that isnt swiss and at least 3k, despite the fact he doesnt own anything like it.

But a little tip. Your watch is a chronograph. Which means it both tells time and has a stopwatch. Some people might get a chuckle if you tell them its a watch but also has a stopwatch!

PS; I do think that there are some watches that have a similar look that are better value (imo). In general I think watches are probably one of the nut worst fashion items to impulse buy.

I knew it was just a decent cheap watch when I got it, it was def impulse buy, but I got a good deal on it. This is literally the only watch I have now. I really like how it fits and feels though so that's all that matters. If it was uncomfortable then I would probably never wear it. The stop watch is very cool, it even says the day off the month which is cool too.

As scrolls said, regarding the collars you should read some of the discussion in the Luxire thread.
Button down on oxfords is a solide choice, but depends on your preferences.

Sweaters V-neck only.

Also, imo Europe has better access to clothing due to the fact that a lot of higher end stuff is Made in Italy.
So your location shouldnt really concern you.
12-10-2013 , 04:19 AM
Heavier sweaters are fine as crew neck.
12-10-2013 , 04:21 AM
Yes, my recommendation was solely regarding shirt + sweater combinations.

If you want to wear a t-shirt + sweater then crew neck is fine.

I like that watch Custer. I'm gonna need to up my watch game pretty soon. Have three decent ones, but can never have too many. Not sure whether I should get something like a Hamilton/Tissot now to tie me over, or just hold off till I can drop a few K.

Leaning option 2 since I have two pretty nice ones that get lots of compliments in the 300-400 range, but I also like buying new ones
12-10-2013 , 06:50 AM
Me current outlook is to get the orient. And then maybe a steinhart chrono if I get a signing bonus when I get a job. That's going to run like 1k. Then I would probably save and buy a nice watch once I get out of student loan debt.

If you already have low range watches for all occasions(formal/business casual/ casual) then I wouldst save for a 3k+ watch

I saw a really old vintage watch on this young kids wrist at a plo table in Vegas. I mean I could tell it was old but it looked expensive. Thoughts on old vs New CC?
12-12-2013 , 10:55 PM
I need some shoes for heading out to the club. Thinking they would mainly be worn with jeans and a button up. I'm improving my style recently, but have always had a hard time when it comes to shoes. Any recs?

Purely Taste. Most vintage watches can be restored pretty accurately without having to replace parts, and many vintage watches are still reliable. If you liek the look go for it. there are definitely things you'll see in modern watches that were not really done in older watches. A lot more flash now a days too.

You can get really nice movements/watches for a great price going vintage if thats your thing.
