Really depends on time of day and the cast of characters you get. I played from like 11pm to 9am recently, and at night it was reasonably deep (using this term loisely), like 5 100bb stacks on a 8-9 handed table. By the morning 6am ish, we were left with lots of insomniacs and old nits buying in for 30bb to 50bb. So, common sense really: night is deeper/looser than day, afternoon/evening better than morning, weekend better than middle of the week, etc. Not exactly earth shattering info. General trend seems to be towards deeper games, but really all depends on if the people who run up stacks are willingly to stick around (saw a ridiculous situation where drunk guy with $800+ was run off the table by 2-3 guys bullying and insulting him).

This is very good news. Thanks for the update

Seems like table selection will be key but it shouldn't be hard with 10+ games to choose from.

I noticed on Bravo that the 1/2/5 PLO game hasn't run in a while according to the screen. Is there just no more interest? Played about 6 weeks ago but haven't seen it since.

2/5 has replaced it. Ability to run it twice, better buy ins, guaranteed to be in the back, and you never have to deal with anyone refusing to straddle.

the new 1/2 buy is great! one of the best moves the poker room has made in its short history. i will agree that now the min buy in for 2/5 should be changed to 300. and please oh please don't start a 1/1 game!

Pretty spot on observation.

My Saturday night tables, 6pm-1am, were a mix of $60, $100 and $200 buy-ins and most every rebuy was for $80-100. PF raises seemed to be $10-12 with an occasional $8 and if players limped in pre-raise they mostly stuck around to see the flop.

The players who ran up big stacks tended to rack up and go.

The games played much more like the old 1-1 game than the 1-3 game.

Really dislike the new 1-2 game. It plays much smaller than the old 1-3 (playing Fri early evening prior to tourney). Raised preflop 5 times in 2 hours, got blinds + limps in 4 of 5. Guess I need to move to 2/5 (unlikely since I'm occasion rec player) or play at derby or 2/5 at daytona (500$ max). The 1/3 was a quality game with a mix of good and bad players, with money flowing freely. Hard to believe you can make 30$ an hour in the new 1/2.

Its understandable, many people fear change. What difference is there in your mindset between the Daytona and THR 2/5 NL games?

i tried the 1/2nl on Fri night when I was sort of doped up with cold meds and didnt want to play 2/5 all cloudy headed. I rarely played it before the change, and have played 1/3 just a few times. Plus I just wanted to see what it was like.

First, at about 1030pm there were 16 1/2nl tables running That seems like a high number from what I recall they used to run. The game was mostly $200-400 stacks with a couple larger. That held throughout the night. Dont think I saw anyone buy in for less than100 while I was there.

As for play, raises were between 7-12 pf with lots of callers, few three bets, but if there was, lots of callers. Fair number of large pots. More chasing draws and calling three streets light compared to what I'm used to at 2/5. Strangely, there was also a LOT of hollywooding/excessive tanking that I didnt expect. But overall I thought the action was good, and several times people would come over, see the stacks and pot size and ask if it was 2/5.

Seemed like more"serious" players than I thought, but lots of tourist types as well. overall I thought it was a good game and definitely an improvement from the old way. I suspect it will play larger as the word gets out. But again, I've got limited play time at 1/2 and 1/3 to use as a reference. But it seemed pretty good to me, sort of like a 1/2 game I played in Harrahs Vegas for a few days.

Last edited by browser2920; 09-15-2013 at 09:13 PM. Reason: Really think a lot is just what table you happen to get. At 2/5, one table would be a chop fest while another is maniacal.

It's not a mindset change, max buy-in of $1k vs $500 makes a big difference in the game dynamics and the way it plays.

1/2 is no different from any other (non-higher stakes) game in any poker room: it's all about game selection. If you were at a bad table for two hours--and on a Friday evening to boot, with probably around ten tables to choose from-- then you're at fault for staying there exactly two hours longer than you should have.

Yup. Had a couple of hotshots at 2/5 yesterday afternoon playing 80% of the hands and raising to 85 pre at times. Thinking they are cool because they are pushing around the table.

Pretty funny to watch because they think that they are good when really all they are doing is betting, betting again, betting again, and hoping the other person doesn't have enough of a hand to call (which is what you can do with 200BB). What a sophisticated strategy.

Then someone calls them down with top pair and bye-bye $1K.

(Of course I sat there for three hours with a constant stream of unsuited 9 gappers, so my life pretty much sucked.)

I haven't been there for the new 1/2 but I'm hoping to get there in the next few weeks. I don't want to seem like piling on, but I gotta say I think your table was an exception rather than a norm. If you have a bad table, don't try and ride the wave, get up and change tables. I didn't really find too many bad players at 1/3.... wait that means I WAS THE BAD PLAYER! FML!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, Derby's 1/3 game plays close to a 2/5 a lot. Might want to give that a try if this isn't working for you. Me, 150BB 1/2 seems like a good game.

Excited about the new changes... Next move is to allow buyins to match the biggest stack at the 2/5 and up games. Now if HR and Derby changes to "no flop, no drop" would be poker heaven, but i wont hold my breath for that one! Been playing at Derby since it cuts my commute by 20 mins... Until further changes... Won't be seeing me at HR anytime soon

Why does timed raked differ between stakes? Played the 5/10 PLO last night and was kind of surprised that the rake was $7/30min vs $6 at 2/5. I'm not sure if this is common place but it seems a bit silly. Just curious as to the justification.

No Flop No Drop is the way it should be.I believe they changed it to that recently and then switched back after 3 days. The other change would hurt the game not help it.A 1k max buy in with a straddle in any position makes the game where it needs to be. If you need to buy in for $3k or more, then play a larger game somewhere else.

what rooms around tampa/st pete have no flop/no drop? interested to see if one is near my parents house.

it makes a huge difference imo. it's amplified when it's taken without even getting to 6 dollars. i remember the first time i played 1-2 at thr; raising pre, everyone folding, and being given $2 instead of $3 and thinking "this dealer is an idiot... i'm going to let it go this time" lol

Just curious, where do they have bigger games in the tampa area? Don't want to derail but it looks like you have pms turned off.

What is "bigger games"? They have pretty damn big games at Derby Lane, but I'm pretty sure you need a fat chunk to get in... few stacks

Really referring to 5/10+ hem. I've heard about the bigger game that runs at derby, but have heard it's sometimes private and pretty much always plo.
