When did I say I was mad at the dude peeing on the tree (not a bro, random pair up but whatever). Just caught me off guard.

If you take your golf outings serious to the point of playful banter like this being said on occasion maybe youre the ones that are no fun.

*shrugs* stupid discussion either way

Maybe you've got the Nickleback playing too loud. I was just pointing out that you can't seem to handle the uncouth-ness of a random piss in the bushes, but being a total donk hollering at a golf course is ok..

For the record, I heard 'mashed potatoes' for the first time only recently, and it was from a dude with a thick southern accent.. I chuckled. Can only be funny once, imo.

Again, I had zero problem with dude pissing on the course. I do it myself plenty.

And thick southern accents are the best for comedic value.

I'm surprised he didn't yell "Grits".

Quick question for those with country club memberships: does your club have a "junior executive" membership level, and if so, when does it go to? By "junior executive" I mean a full membership level with lower monthly dues for those below a certain age. A club I am looking at has such a membership level, but only through age 32. Another club I looked at (but can't afford the initiation fee) goes until 40. 40 seems high, but I'm hoping 32 is low and I can negotiate with them to extend it a few years.

Along the same vein, have folks been successful negotiating with clubs?

Always thought the standard age is 35, sometimes as low as 30. Never heard of one as high as 40.

Highly doubtful they'll negotiate, if they broke the rules for you then they'd have to for a few others as well. Nobody is forcing you to join, if you choose to you'll almost certainly have to follow their rules.

+1 for 35, but you might be able to deal - it'll depend on how the club is doing.

I thought 35 was standard as well.

I'm going to at least throw that out there. I know they're hurting for memberships, especially with winter approaching, and it's not like they'll be advertising they're giving me a deal.

That was quick: he'll guarantee two years of junior executive from date of sign up, which is essentially extending their time frame 1.5 years. I had a feeling they'd do something. This particular club did not have a good reputation for quite a while, but new owners put over a million dollars into it (including $100,000 on drainage alone, which was one of the biggest complaints I had heard) and everything I've heard has been really positive.

Yeah 35 at my club. Think that is standard but the club I belonged to before this one the age was 32.

I actually think demographics of country clubs is not very good. Obv this could all change but I think inevitably there will be 2 levels of clubs (at least in my state/surrounding area).

IMO there will be the premier clubs that will always have people interested in joining and smaller more focused clubs that "know what they are" and do it really well. For example, there is a club near me that is somewhat short in length but always in good shape, the layout is fun and the location is good. They also have very good food. What they don't have is a large golf shop, clubhouse, etc. They stick to the golf course and the food and do that very well. I believe they will survive.

Other clubs that try and do it all or go over the top with clubhouse, etc. just aren't going to make it IMO. There are 3 clubs I can think of within 10 miles of me that try and fit the "one size fits all" country club approach and I just don't see how they survive long run.

May be different in FL, TX, CA or other more year round golf areas where perhaps it is a "lifestyle" but for sure in east coast and northeast specifically there is a continued consolidation of clubs coming.

This is absolutely the case in FL. The number of courses for sale or in bankruptcy proceedings is staggering.

You have a combination of the retirees that moved down here in the 80's and 90's, that spurred the massive growth of golf course construction, dying off in droves, and no way to back fill those losses.

Standalone golf can still be a marginal profit center in the right circumstances, but a large F&B operation is always going to be a loser. That's not really a recipe for a strong private club. Tough spot to be in for course owners.

I just shot two net -9s in a row, I am completely legit. I don't belong to a club right now but if I did I would probably be suspected of sandbagging right? What are the true odds of this happening? Handicap was 6.5 for first round, 5.7 for second. Differentials of 0.3 and -3.5 respectively if that matters.

Is this a course that you play all the time?
Would be cool to see if you take your confidence and expectations to a course that you know, but don't play that often and see if your results continue. I have a feeling that you would see similar results.

First round was a course I almost never play. Second round was an easy course I play all the time. Playing a course I've never played today. Will report back in the BBV thread.

First one wasn't a net -9. It was a net -6.

Either way, it's super unlikely: http://www.usga.org/playing/handicap...eanstable.html

A functioning Handicap Committee at a club would likely manually adjust your handicap down 3-4 shots.

Oob golf has it as a -9 on the twoplustwo leaderboard. Fwiw the course rating was a couple of shots below par I think.

Ahh, I see what it does. It calculates your net score against par and not against the course rating. That's different than how the handicap system looks at it.

I'm looking at the Wild Turkey score. Par 71, 68.7/124. With an index of 6.5, your course handicap is 7.

Your course handicap is the number of shots you need to shoot the course rating, not even par. So your "target score" for the round is 68.7+7= 74.7, round to 75, not 71+7=78. Target Score is the number you should shoot the times when you play near your best, roughly 25% of the time. You should average a couple shots over your target score if your handicap is accurate.

We can take a different example to show the flip side of that. My home course from the tips is a par 72, rated 75.1/141. At a 6.5 index, your course handicap would be 8. Your target score for the round would be 75.1+8=83.

In the eyes of the handicap system, 75 at Wild Turkey and 82 at my course are equivalent rounds.

Organizing a small tournament again. Playing 9 holes and have to pick a 'fun'format. Weve played bingobangobong, pinehurst and extreme battle piffpaffpoof. I liked all those crazy games so far. But now i have to find a new format. Ive thought about maybe stringgolf. Cant seem to find much other good games online. Ive heard wolf, but that seem better for bettingpurposes.

I also thought about inventing my own game. So far ive come up with a game that involves different superpowers. Cards that you can use. For example you have 1 card that says you can tee off from the faiway. You could use that on a long par 5. Also teeing off from the ladies tee. Anybody got any other good 'superpowers'? I know i kinda sounds lame but i think it might be funny to hit a drive in the middle of the fairway and crazy stuff like that.

All help is appreciated. Especially if you point me to a fun already existing game

Yep. Now I need him to knock down the initiation fee. I feel even better about that one since they run initiation specials all the damn time.

We had a goofy golf tournament for the clubs 60th anniversary earlier this summer.

On one hole we had to play at least one shot out of a bunker.

Another hole had left handed putters and you had to putt from the opposite side of the ball than you normally do (not just flip a lefty putter) (leftys borrowed a right handed putter from a group member as there were no entire lefty groups)

We had an uphill par three with no flag so you couldn't see where on the green to aim. You also couldn't advance from the preceding green until the group in front of you rang a bell - so you couldn't see where on the green they were finishing up.

One hole had pool cues and you had to use them on the green - that was fun.

These make it harder bit easier but I enjoyed them.

An idea for a super power should be everyone has one card to take another's shot. So if you and I are the last two to play from the fairway and you stuff it I can take your shot and I'm laying 3 on the green. You then play out from where my tee shot ended... Or something like that.

Got my first Eagle on a par 4, yesterday.

18th hole - Par 4 325 yards, sharp dogleg left. I took a blind tee shot over the tree line and landed about 10 yards directly past the green (between two little hills ~3 inch thick rough). Took out my 60* wedge ad flopped it 5 feet onto the front edge of the green and saw it roll down the (sloped) green forever, until it just stopped for a second and dropped. Great way to end an up an down day of drinking and golf.
