Sounds like you think its going to be a piece of cake. Hope youre not in for a rude awakening. The grass on the course is going to be a little different than the carpet in your bedroom.

How big of bedroom do you have? 15 yards? 30 yards? How high are the ceilings?

Fair enough. I'm certainly not the most talented person, can def see me struggling with this more than a more talented, but higher handicap, player.

That said, we are talking about averaging about 6.5 shots a hole. Working backwards, lets say once you get within 30 yards of the green you get it down in 3 shots every time (ftr,I don't think that's reasonable) For par 4's that means you have to average getting it to within 30 yards in 3 shots.

Do you really think you can advance a ball 120 yards consistently with only one hand? Seems nuts to me, I know I would duff a big portion of my swings.

That ignores penalty shots and bunkers and yada yada yada.

Good luck though, interested in results.

how far can you hit a ball with just one hand? It would be easier to play off-handed than 1 handed by a decent amount imo. It is pretty straightforward to hit decent shots inside 50 yards with my off hand, but I would definitely chip pretty poorly one handed. When I have hit shots on the range with one hand the ball goes in every direction and not far at all.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, apparently this is going to be tougher than I thought. I honestly thought everyone would think I was a stone cold lock.

I'm going to go to the range to work on hitting with just my right arm either tomorrow or the next day and I'll try to get this challenge done ASAP. Scheduling might wind up being problematic as I really don't want to do this on the weekend and my friend can't play during the week.

I'll report back with any developments. I'm still pretty confident I've got this in the bag.

distance is gonna be a massive concern and hitting balls wont improve this. I would just practice putting and chipping.

yea, at the national championship level I am sure they do (especially since many of them lack a second arm). how much distance do you really think he can add in 1 range session?

Brocktoon,

Hold your left hand over your chest when you swing for optimal control

I feel like it would be easier to swing with the left arm instead of the right arm, anyone else?

Which would be easier way of playing one handed? Playing Left handed or Right handed for a Right handed player? I watched the video and noticed both of these being used. But I'm speaking more from the point of view of the average golfer. Could the average golfer learn something useful from doing this and if so would more be learned from doing it Left handed or Right handed from a Right handed players point of view?

Either way, one arm needs to be tucked into your body and not just flailing around.

Brocktoon, If this guy just started and loses 12 balls a round then the good news is there's probably no way he breaks 120. He'll probably be shooting in the 130s if not low 140s if he's scoring 100% honestly.

People on this forum underestimate what truly bad golf looks like. Shooting in the one-teens is significantly better than what some otherwise athletic people will do with no practice. Trust me - I've played golf with my dad and my friend - both of whom are really good baseball hitters and both of whom own a set of golf clubs. Both shot in the 140s. Biggest problem I saw was they would hit from one side of the fairway over to the next. Over-correcting and hitting through the fairway. As well as skulling chips and pitches from one side of the green to the other on almost every hole. Not to mention averaging 3 putts per round if not more.

I'm guessing he's ripped nothing but driver at the range and probably has zero clue how to get out of a bunker or hit punch shots from under trees and is awful at game management and course management and he'll be severely tilted by the 6th hole because he's not 2 under like Tiger Woods.

That said, I have no idea what you'll shoot. Seems tougher than you imagine but I still think it's a winable bet. Just not sure if you're a favorite.

For some reason I feel like I'd hit the driver with my left (front) arm and hit iron shots from the fairway with my right arm, choked down, with a steep angle of attack. Whatever gets you that nice thin shot that will run up the fairway 100+ yards. Hit like you would a punch shot from under a tree but just use your right hand and take more club and choke down more. Then pop down on that bitch or catch it amateur-side thin and let it topple up the fairway. Greenside pitches and chips will all be lead arm. Do you have to select one arm and stick with it or just hit every shot with only 1 arm (left OR right?)

Good thing is you don't have to worry about slicing it much since ground slices don't deviate nearly as much as air slices.

Bet is already locked in for right arm, this was his choice too. Fwiw I'd rather play with my right arm just because its so much stronger and I have better control over it.

I agree with you on him shooting over 120 with legit scoring also. If I can carry the water on those 2 holes I mentioned and stay out of traps I have a hard time seeing a way he beats me. I just have to figure out what club I can hit off a tee that gives me the best chance to carry 150.

I remember in the 90's doing one-handed drills during a lesson, and the pro told me Nick Price could hit balls 170 yards with a 6 iron that way. But he was like #1 in the world at the time so carrying it 130 is definitely going to be tough.

I tried to look up scores for one armed tournaments, but it looks like they just do match play: http://www.onearmgolf.org/History.html

We had a guy on my high school team w one arm. He had his right arm and his full shots were like a lefty. He was prob. a 20 handicap

I went to a baseball tryout and there was a dude there missing a hand. He was probably 6'6" 160 and I think he was a right-handed pitcher. No idea how he did it but I saw him in the cage and he was raking pretty good. Definitely good enough to play in the league.

Saw some dude in the group behind me with one arm once. I only saw a few shots but they were good enough that I'd be surprised if he didn't break 90

The score will be a side effect.
What? 100% backwards.

I was definitely telling him to work on his short game to score better. The side effect might be to improve some fundamentals.

Many 20+ handicaps constantly take 3/4 shots to get down from 0-30 yards away from the green when they should be taking 3 max, and 2 often.

With my long game I'd be a mid 20s if I couldn't scramble!

When I was taking lessons my instructor had me swing one-handed (both left-handed/backhanded and righty). Pretty sure I got more distance swinging righty. I don't think it's too tough to make solid contact, but I do think distance could be an issue.

Once again, I wish I golfed enough to waste a round using one arm.
