the weight limit on the heavyweight division is 265. there is a superheavyweight division with no weight limit under the unified rules but the ufc doesn't bother with it because there are very few worthwhile fighters who can't get down to 265. if a whole bunch of great huge fighters magically appeared i'm sure the ufc would implement the division.

Sounds like a moneymaker to me. Wasn't he a decent attraction in Japan?

Ndamukong Suh and a few other NFL linemen would probably not agree with your assessment of 300+ athletes. Sapp was a big muscle bound oaf who coulndn't make it in the NFL, partially because he was a big muscle bound oaf. Also just how tough were Sapp training camps between his wrestling, commericials, and appearances? If he never developed an advanced fighting skill why do you think he was training his cardio in the proper fashion.

i bet suh could get to 265 pretty easily. lose 15-20 lbs of fat and cut the rest. being somewhat fat is beneficial for defensive linemen but it's detrimental in mma.

really though you unintentionally point out why there aren't very many enormous guys that are also super athletic in mma. they all play football and basketball instead.

disagree, for the reasons stated above. Suh could probably make 265 imo if he lost some of the fat rolls. Guys that big can cut 30 pounds of water weight or so.

And you're VASTLY overestimating their cardio abilities as well, i think. These are athletes who have trained their whole lives to give 100% effort for about 7 seconds a pop, then get a 30 second rest. Fight cardio is a whole different animal, and I'd bet that the vast majority of NFL linemen, even the freak athletes, would be out of their minds exhausted after one round of hard grappling.

Evans is a very legit #2 in the world right now. On resume alone, he has better wins and you could easily call him the #1 in the world.

Of course, factoring in the eye test, Jones is the favorite. Evans' striking is good/very good but not great/elite. Jones is longer and probably a smidge faster. He's unorthodox and hard to prepare for. Neither fighter is technically great/perfect (although Evans has gotten away from some of his earlier silliness bouncing/jawing/showboating). Jones has an advantage.

Wrestling, jones also has an advantage. He's decimated every wrestler he's ever fought, and I don't know that anybody has ever stopped his takedowns consistently. Rashad is a great wrestler, but Jones is elite, and he's made a habit of ragdolling other wrestling based fighters that don't normally get ragdolled (like Vladdy and Hamill). We've never seen Rashad have to fight off his back before, and it's probable he'll have to. Then again, Jones has never faced a fighter/wrestler of Rashad's caliber, but the edge has to go to Jones.

Submissions/grappling I would call a draw. I don't know that there's much of an advantage either way. Rashad seems very savvy/sound/safe on the ground. He's never been subbed, or really in a bad position on the ground. On top, he works cautiously and is fundamentally sound with position. Doesn't have a lot of sub skill, but very good sub defense. Jones has some submission savvy, but he's also been doing BJJ for a lesser amount of time than Rashad. He's more explosive athletically, but also seems to be more prone to sacrifice a good position to try a crazy move. One tipping point, perhaps: Jones' GNP is far more brutal than Evans' has typically been. If both fighters had to endure one round on top and one on bottom, I would expect that Jones would land the harder, more significant blows.

So Jones is the favorite, how could he win? He could get a KO/TKO standing. He could get a KO/TKO from GNP. I don't think it's likely he submits Rashad, because Rashad is fundamentally sound on the ground. If Rashad was going to win, what would need to happen? He'd have to surprise us by either catching Jones on the feet with a big one hitter quitter, or fundamentally outboxing him for several rounds. I don't the the first is likely, but maybe the second could happen. Maybe Jones gasses some at some point. Or maybe Rashad could work a GNP gameplan, but I just can't see Jones being outwrestled or controlled for very long.

Jones is extremely good, but Rashad is a live dog imo, a little moreso than rampage.

couple of really nice fights so far.

SPOILY SPOILING SPOILERS

Cole Miller won a fun fight, dropped his opponent and then guillotined him.

Hettes sent Bruce Leeroy out of the UFC (good riddance) in a super-fun fight (possibly FOTN) with a nice choke after a crazy series of transitions.

Ed Herman nearly subbed Kyle Noke like 3-4 times before landing a nice heel hook that popped/tore Hoke's knee

Miller is a sneaky best name in MMA imo.

Jim Miller, Dan Miller, Cole Miller, Micah Miller, Mayhem Miller.

Might have been Silva or Nogueira in the past but miller now imo.

Silva's still pretty loaded but With Thiago and Wandy going downhill it's not like it used to be. Anderson and Antonio holding that banner now.

HUGE NEWS

The UFC has supposedly finally signed the long awaited network television deal.

Bloody Elbow is reporting that Sports Business Daily has these details:

Four events per year on Fox. Seven or Eight year deal with bidding reaching 90M per year. Programming on Spike and Versus will move to FX, with some stuff also going to Fuel TV.

This is pretty ****ing awesome news. More free fights. BETTER free fights, you have to think the network cards will be stacked. More exposure for the sport, this could lead to a whole new round of growth. I think if this pans out (FOX and UFC are both tight lipped right now) it's a pretty monumental thing.

Balance w/ PPV's this contract

Grow the audience and viewer share and break the bank w/ the next contract and PPV's will hopefully no longer be necessary

I wonder how this will impact the Strikeforce situation
