I 100% agree with you on the 30/27 score. Maia won round 1, no questions asked. But is it really a stretch to give Munoz the win? That fight was as close to a draw as it gets imo.

how did the match get stopped while carwin was getting his brains crushed in is my question. pretty ridiculous it didn't get stopped...seemed kinda like when carwin was beating on lesnar, but carwin had completely given up there, couldn't defend himself, and it kinda just looked like dos santos just stopped punching him so he wouldn't kill him

I think it's good that Herb gave Carwin a long leash at the end of the first round; Carwin was in an almost identical situation with Brock and then lost the fight, so in a sense it seems like he "deserves" a chance to come back, as Brock did against him.

Thoughts:

JDS's speed was the killer. Speed kills. I think he's at least a push, if not a favorite over Cain. Cain is a better wrestler than Carwin, but is an inferior striker to JDS and can't win a stand up fight against JDS imo. He'll have to take him down to win. Plus, who knows how the layoff + repaired rotator cuff will affect him.

Carwin saw his last fight from the other point of view, only without the 2nd round miracle. That stop/don't stop decision was balancing on a razor's edge for like 20-30 straight seconds it seemed.

Dave Herman is so much fun to watch. I think he can run through anybody not in the top 15 of the HW division. But he needs a few more fights against those guys who he'll probably beat easily, because he leaves pretty big holes for his opponents with his wildness. Still, awesome fight.

JOE still has a future as a UFC HW. World class grappling and at least decent power and striking, he can easily beat up on the Joey Beltran's of the world, right?

lol 30-27 for Munoz, Florian, and JDS (which was absolutely a 30-26). THIS IS WHY WE CANNOT HAVE HALF POINTS. The judges are clinically ******ed. Seriously imagine what these mouth-breathing knuckle-draggers would do with half points.

All we need is for people to SCORE FIGHTS CORRECTLY. No changes to the system. For the love of god, how was JDS-Carwin round one a 10-9? We don't need 1/2 points, we just need judges who can correctly say that "ass-beating = 10-8".

I was fine with the eventual winner of both fights. Florian needs another tune-up before an Aldo fight. He's got the time since Mendes will get the next shot. Maybe hominick, or Manny gamburyan (if he beats tyson griffin).

Maia/Munoz was a fun scrap for 2 rounds. I can't figure out how Maia turned up the heat so well in the first round, and where that disappeared to in the later rounds. 3rd round was meh and could have gone either way, neither guy did enough to definitively win so I could see it as a 10-10. Again, judges simply won't score fights any way other than 10-9, which is the real problem with scoring.

Thoughts:

JOE vs. Matt Mitrione?

Dave Herman vs Joey beltran? Because really, I want to stop watching Joey Beltran fights. It seems like every fight he's in turns into an awful sloppy slopfest. He's 3-2 but has never looked even a little impressive to me. Herman needs some seasoning before hitting the big boys and i want somebody to send beltran away.

Alternatively, just have JOE vs Beltran.

Other random noise:

This was seriously a damn entertaining card.

Dana promised to pay Omigawa his win bonus. You're a good man (sometimes), Dana.

Sam Stout provided me with one of my favorite things in MMA, the "KO shot now I'm gonna beat you some more butnahhhhhhhhhh victory pose". It's not that often you get to see a clean KO followed by a beautiful walkway. Thanks, Sam.

ye but the difference is Brock took only a couple of flush shots. JDS just smacked Carwin to a pulp.

Good to let it go, but it was far closer to being justifiably stopped than Carwin vs Lesnar.

DO, Maia's gameplan went out the window at the start of the second when he almost got ko'd after getting caught with a left-right, looked brilliant until then.

i think we found out his striking defense isnt yet to par with his striking offense.

Thoughts on the fights:

Munoz/Maia
Maia's striking was awesome, especially in the first round he was really crisp and throwing with a lot of power and fluidity. Munoz' defensive BJJ was great. Both men are clearly evolving as fighters and I think both have a bright future. Munoz seems like he is on his way to a title shot. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a rematch between Maia and Munoz at some point down the road. I'd like to see it.

JDS/Carwin
It was fun to see JDS really settle in and start picking Carwin apart with his boxing. Dos Santos basically has it all as a striker: Speed, power, length, movement, chin. He doesn't get hit often but when he does it doesn't seem to phase him at all.

Very excited for JDS/Cain. IMO, its the most legitimate MMA HW title fight since... well, ever. Both fighters are 7-0 in the UFC, JDS with 5 stoppages due to strikes, Cain with 6. Both are young and still improving. Can't ask for much more. I'd give JDS the pure striking edge, but if Cain can score some takedowns early, the stand-up could turn is his favor if JDS has to compromise some of his boxing abilities to be better prepared for takedown attempts. Cain coming off a serious injury and possible ring rust after a year on the shelf is obviously a concern, though.

Herman/Einamo
Dave Herman is a crazy mother ****er. It seems like he legitimately enjoys getting hit in the face! I think he'd be great for the UFC as the last fight on the Spike prelims to encourage fans to purchase the PPV, or as the first fight on the main card. Pit him against someone like Beltran and I think we'll see an awesome first round KO (for Herman). Would also like to see Herman vs. winner of Pat Barry/Cheick Kongo.

agreed!

It appears as though Carwin's ************ strategy was ineffective. It reminds me of Mir's weight-gain strategy to be able to try to match the strength of the bigger heavyweights, although in the opposite direction.

You must not betray your style, Daniel san!
