This Is All Getting a Bit Scilly
Last weekend we decided we'd have a crack at the Scilly Isles, most of us hadn't been before, there's a little quiet nightlife and is a beautiful place to spend a weekend. For those among us who haven't heard of/don't know where the Scilly Isles are:
We set off from London and happened across Glastonbury setting up for next weekend, all the stages were going up and the tents had been pitched. I'm very jealous of everyone going!
The plan was to stop at Bovey Castle for lunch after a quick refuel and then continue down. If you're looking for somewhere beautiful to take the other half for a birthday or something like that Bovey is absolutely brilliant. It's nestled away just West of Exeter on the edge of Dartmoor, lots of good walking, a golf course and some nightlife in Exeter if you're desperate.
We had a great lunch on the terrace but received the unfortunate news that they'd shut the airport at the Scilly Isles due to fog. While not being impossible for us to land there, we wouldn't be flavour of the month if we turned up and argued about it; they will remember your tail number and can be a bit difficult in the future. We set about finding somewhere else in Devon or Cornwall that we could go visit but it's a bit of a difficult task. Finding somewhere we can land the helicopter as well as putting 5 of us up in rooms at about 30 minutes notice is quite difficult. However luckily we found somewhere that said they could let us land as well as give us all rooms, it wasn't really what we were looking for but at this point beggars can't be choosers! We booked a club in Exeter and the rooms at the hotel and finished our drinks.
We had a bit of time so we headed out over Dartmoor and as you can imagine it was beautiful, we had a look at the infamous Dartmoor prison and emerged at Plymouth in glorious sunshine. We buzzed the coastline all the way up to Exeter with absolutely fantastic views. Being lazy unfortunately I didn't take any photos but I'll try get some at some point.
We got over the hotel and to be honest were pretty disappointed. Their landing area was very public next to a motorway, a car park and people's houses. Not really an ideal place to leave it overnight. All things considered we cut our losses and headed back to Surrey to stay at one of the teams places. This proved to be a great decision, we made it back in an hour or so and drank deeply into the evening in hotel like comfort.

I suck at snooker, despite being around average at billiards and pool.
The next morning we didn't feel like heading right back to London so we made for the Isle of Wight for lunch, but not before finishing the whisky.
It might not be the Scilly Isles but at least we made it to an island. We decided to come back into London from the East which gave us some fantastic views of Canary Wharf and the City and also passing over Dunsfold where they film Top Gear.
All in all it was a great weekend, we achieved almost nothing we set out to do except having a great laugh with great people. Next on the list is probably going to be Scotland, lots to explore up there!
