I thought that bit was hilarious, it was like Walt, freshly sacked from his job (or on 'indefinite leave') felt he had to treat someone like a student one more time, only instead of slating him for a bad project or something, it's the poor standard of his meth.

As for Skylar/Benneke, the way I see that going is him eventually using the fact that she has signed off on some dodgy financials as way of forcing her to sign off on more, as if he/the company goes down, she'll be in deep **** as the one who signed off on the books.

I was more nitting on the outdoor ATM - never saw that before besides at a bank - like it's right there for a meth head to take.

i concede i am an idiot - someone explain to me hank's obsession with Heisenberg, or what's really going on psychologically with him. Is he just scared of going back to El Paso? Does he really want the Blue off the street? Does he just want to bag a bigtime dealer/manufacturer? Is Hank "breaking bad" somehow, for whatever reason?
04-13-2010 , 12:41 PM
i think the scene where his boss put him on the spot showed pretty clearly that he was scared to go back to el paso, and while he is probably genuinely concerned/interested in the blue meth, he is definitely using it as an excuse to avoid going to el paso more than anything else.

that's where his panic attacks started, so I guess he's not too anxious to get back there

I'm pretty sure he had the panic attacks even before he got to El Paso.

A big reason why I asked is because I saw it that way too - that there is something else going on with Hank beyond Tortuga's head exploding and him being scared.

not saying this isn't true, i just don't remember any signs. he was super gung-ho to go to el paso the first time. he was joking around in the office where the dude gave him the little figurine of the drug god or whatever. it was my understanding that it all changed after the tortuga explosion.

All of Hank's bluster is a pretty obvious cover for his fear and feeling of inadaquacy. They showed a few moments of his panicky behavior before he got shipped out to El Paso.

Yeah, I thought so too, but the creator Gilligan made a comment in one of the review clips that basically said that is where they started - maybe that is where they just went to a new level.

The first panic attacks I remember started after Hank's shootout with Tuco. He was trying to play up his bad-assery to the rest of the force, but internally it seemed to really rattle him and you could tell he felt lucky to be alive.

But one of Hank's defining attributes has been his bluster and swagger as cover for his fears of inadequacy-- inadequacy which he feels will be even further exposed if he goes to El Paso.

What is it that they showed about Hank prior to El Paso that makes you think this?

He was/is a good cop, loves his job, etc. After the exploding severed head, he immediately starts having problems, panic/anxiety attack in the elevator, sleeplessness, erratic behavior.

Are you just confused about the time line or was there something that implied to you that he wasn't perfectly adjusted.
04-13-2010 , 03:08 PM
Yeah - timeline - I was thinking like Mano above that there was at least one scene of him freaking out some before El Paso.
04-13-2010 , 03:09 PM
hank had to throw tuco's grill cube into the river because he couldn't stand being reminded of it

also pulling his gun when his beer bottles were exploding in the garage

there was also a scene where he was in an elevator and had to hit the emergency stop because he was freaking out, but that could've been after el paso, i'm not sure
04-13-2010 , 03:17 PM
You guys are right, and it was me with the time line issue. He does/did show signs after the Tuco shooting.

So all they have to chase you down after is a license plate? Anything happen?

Yeah, not thrilled about the outdoor ATM either. Those things bring me out of shows which isn't a good thing. Also, I doubted that had a long-term tape to record. Oh well.

Could not agree more! Hated that show and a lot of reason was because of him.

I was thinking at the time when hank was freaking out in the elevator he was maybe having a heart attack
04-13-2010 , 05:12 PM
Hank is a big fish in a small pond in Albuquerque. He loves his job and is good at it. People respect him.

in El Paso he did not fit in from the start, felt unprepared and inadequate and disliked the stress of the big cartel violence.

Busting Heisenberg is something he can accomplish which is likely of big benefit to the Albuquerque area. He is using it as an excuse why he does not have to go back to El Paso.

Almost certain this was after the tortuga part, and was the precursor to him being shipped back.

No. I just checked this - season 2 episode 5, about 11:30 minutes in he has the panic attack in the elevator just after he has been told of his promotion. Same episode with the beer exploding, and Hank tossing the grill into the river. All of this is before he goes to El Paso.
