played bethpage black with a 14 year old kid and his father today, couldn't believe how well this kid hit the ball. had an incredible swing and drove it 285+ on a string with a soaring trajectory and had a really solid short game. pretty amazing someone could have that advanced of a game at that young age but i guess it reflects the direction that the game is going in with some of this young talent. made me feel a bit old though haha :-X

Is this off topic because it is in our new September hyper thread and not April's?

Mike Weir won because once per century God smiles on gay midget Canadian robots, and that was the week. Also, he was 100-for-100 from 8 feet. Plus Len Mattiace choked in the playoff. There's probably something else too.

Playing my first round of golf tomorrow. I've only been to the range 5ish times. Before I ever picked up a club I hoped my first round would be <100...but I think I severely underestimated the game. Should be interesting...

HAVE FUN and don't hold up the group behind you. That's pretty much all you HAVE to do out there. The rest is up to you for your own enjoyment.

Like Reid said, just have fun and don't hold anyone up. Probably going to be a busy weekend at most courses.

Just hit a tee shot and a couple of irons, then if you aren't really close to the green, just pick it up and drop it right off the green so you can chip and putt. It will be more fun for you, your playing partners, and the people behind you.

On a side note, when my stepdad taught me to play when I was 15, I didn't step on a golf course until I had hit balls twice a week for about 6 months. Certainly didn't help my short game any, but I could move it forward consistently the first day out.

I'm debating on whether or not to golf today. My friends are all busy and I haven't gone solo in awhile.

Went pretty well today. It was busy, but I can't say I held people up. There were two groups of slow playing people in front of us that did that for me.

Shot a 108 (I took a few mulligans and helped myself out in other little ways, but w/e) and played better than I expected.

Worst aspects are definitely driving and putting. Need to work on those. I only hit one drive that I would consider decent which went ~ 200 yards. I think that was the only fairway I hit too.

Had a really good time.

108ish, even with a little cheating, is pretty solid for your first round out. Congrats.

is this unusual?
Theres a good website you can plug all of your scores in and it tallys everything up for you pretty easily.

It has thousands of golf courses tracked so you can usually find the one you play and just put in your scores.

Although I duno the website, will ask my brother for it asap

I'm Canadian, but not a real defender of Mike Weir. I'm proud he won the masters, but thought he was/is overrated. When he was ranked 6th in the world, I thought 20th was more appropriate at the time. You can't continue to get birdiers on par 5's with your SW and LW and compete against the bombers. Not to mention the long par 4 trouble he has.

Also, I don't know how many times Weir has had a good round and just blew up on one hole or spewed stokes on 17 and 18. He is a grinder, but I don't think he's clutch.

I do, however, have an easy arguement to why/how he won a masters.

1. He's 12th on the career money list and nobody above him is without at least one major. I know this is an off list because it is heavily weighted on who won money in the 2000s, but nonetheless, he and all the other 12 have at least one major.

2. He has 9 wins in 9 years. Is it that suprising that one of them was a major?

3. Augusta is not long (Zach Johnson won). If Weir in is prime was going to win a major, I think it would be the Masters, where iron play and putting rule.

PITTM, consdidering the above, why is it odd that Weir won a masters. Don't you have some better bones to pick with...

Todd Hamilton
Rich Beem
Ben Curtis
Shawn Micheel

Weir has the same # of career wins as all 4 of these major winners -- combined.......

Gotta be a nit here and disagree. It's all about the course conditions at Augusta which is mostly weather dependent. Augusta can play hard and fast and it's not terribly long, that's how it was when Zach won. But with rain and/or soft conditions, it plays longer than any course on tour save perhaps Torrey Pines. That's one of the problems many have with the new Augusta.

I don't remember how it played in 2003 when Weir won mainly because I'm too lazy to pop in the tape. Yes, I still use tape, screw digital recording.

Weird names winning the British Open can be explained by weather. Some years half the field is eliminated just from their Thurs/Fri draw on the tee times because on Thursday the early group may get good weather and the late group is hosed by howling wind followed by getting screwed again by terrible weather the early round on Friday while the late group on Friday gets calm conditions. When you randomly cut the field in half it's easier for a strange name to climb to the top.

Have you seen Korea's Olympic archery team? Apply that sort of discipline to golf and you see why there are so many that are so good.

In the SliceFixer interview on Gotham Golf Blog, he talks a little bit about it and just how systematic they are. He said something like the kids coming in wont even hit a golf ball for 4-6 weeks. They work on alignment, grip, posture for a week using video. Then spend a week on takeway to 9oclock position., a week getting to the top, etc.

Sounds not very fun compared to how I learned which was to be given a cut down 7 iron at age 4 and turned loose in the backyard with whiffle balls.

No wonder they are so good. They treat this game like it's a job.
