I have owned a GolfLogix gps for the last 2 years and I can't live without it.
The advantages are too good to pass up:
- speeds up play for you and your partners; no more pacing the fairway to find distances
- gives distances to obstacles; water, bunkers, end-of-fairway, etc.
- gives depth of greens - this has been the biggest advantage for me so far. For example, a course I play has a 60 yard deep green on their first hole, the approach distance can vary by as much as 4-5 clubs. Without a GPS, I wouldn't have ever considered that a green could be that big and would end up severely misclubbing more often than not.
- another huge advantage is when you severely miss a tee-shot and might be standing in another fairway with absolutely no idea what your distance is.

i fully support their use

$300?? It better tell you which way the wind is blowing and show you naked picture of Natalie Gublis for that much.

Range finders are one of the best improvements of the game. Golf is too slow anyways, so anything to speed it up = +EV.

Now USGA has to allow these in their qualifiers/tournaments. Bull**** that they legalize the device then don't allow it for their championships. What's the harm imo as long as it doesn't calculate slope.

I was talking with one of the guys at my home course the other day. He's a good player, multiple time club champion. He got a GPS and says it's saving him at least a stroke a round.

I honestly have no idea how. I mean he's probably played 3000 rounds at the course. I'm sure he knows all the yardages by heart. He knows which greens are deeper than others. Etc, etc. How do you suppose it's making that much of a difference?

I'm not inclined to spend the money on one myself but I will say a rangefinder/gps is sure nice to have when playing other courses.

Is he really fat? Might be an energy issue...no way it should help that much but it is nice to laser carry yardages etc.

One reason I like them being illegal in tourneys is there is an art to using a sprinkler head that isn't on your direct line. If you are off in the woods and using a sprinkler from the fairway I guarantee you that people will come up with distances that range as much as 10-20 yards wrong sometimes. That is an experience thing that makes me not like using them in tournaments. But, that should only be a concern at the national am tournaments and higher.

I kinda like having to figure out how far I am from the pin or the green...or how far I have to carry a shot over a hazard...it just seems like part of the game. But I also don't mind using a range finder, because, let's face it, they are rad.

I am a beginner and have looked at the lofts on my clubs, which seem a little weird to me.

I have:
1W-10.5
3W-16
3h-17
4h-21
and then 5i and up which I don't know the lofts on.

When I used to play years ago, I had a 5W and 7W which were my "go to" clubs to just gain some distance out of the rough or whatever. I've been trying to nominate the 3h and 4h as those but am having some trouble getting used to them. They don't seem to be as forgiving as I recall the 5-and-7 woods being, though maybe my swing has changed. I can hit my irons 5 and up pretty well.

Should I be looking for some kind of 19-degree fairway wood to fill the gap or am I not going to see much difference if I can't hit the 3+4 hybrid?

I'm a beginner too, so take this with a grain of salt, but I like my 5W a lot--although I've never swung a hybrid, so I don't know how well that would go. If you feel better with a 5W and 7W, why not get them and use them instead of the hybrids?

Yeah, this is what I'm starting to think as well.

I remember when I first started golf a long time ago, my set came with woods 1,3,5 and Irons 3-9. It took my quite a while to be able to hit the 3 and 4 irons and I never preferred them to the 5-7 woods. Hybrids didn't exist then, so I haven't really been able to figure out if a 5-wood is going to be easier for me to hit than a 3-hybrid or not.

It's probably all about what you're comfortable with. I've never hit a wood lower than a 3wood so I can't really speak from experience, but I do own 2 hybrids and I think they are the best clubs on gods green earth. Since you already have the hybrids, i'd suggest giving them a second/third/fourth chance and if you just don't click with them, definitely go shopping for 5w or 7w to replace them. They should fill the same yardage gap.

Yeah, I think I'm going to stick with them for a little while longer. I dont want to try to use equipment to fix a fundamental flaw. Thanks.

I was out shopping for golf clothes yesterday and couldn't believe how expensive they are, even in decent discount golf shops...so I had an idea and went to Ross...

Score!

Four pairs of shorts (two Izod and two Perry Ellis) and three Nike shirts all for $76.

Most of my golf stuff is UnderArmour, which is quite expensive, but I like the synthetic fabrics for summer and the stuff wears really well. I have a bunch of shirts that I bought 2 seasons ago and they still look brand new.

Also, the UnderArmour Fairway pants are unreal comfortable.

I'm psyched!

(brag) Oh, and I've pulled this sweet puppy out of the closet to try today:

anyone here use their Full Tilt points to buy the ProV1 balls they have for sale in the store? I just ordered 6 sleeves and plan to keep doing so...they cost 4,000 points a sleeve.

also, I've got a 35 year old Ping putter I still use...am I costing myself strokes? Should I really go get one of these ridiculous new-fangled putters? It just seems like the most basic part of the game - tap a ball towards the hole - and it doesn't need to be anything but a well-balanced piece of metal, you know?

If you are comfortable with how the putter feels, sounds, and how you can roll the ball with it, no reason to change imo.

well, I suck at putting and could really use a lesson, but I like the putter.

I'd say stick with the putter and just get your practice in. If with more putts you think you want a change, then try out some others. I currently use an odyssey 2-ball and would prefer to get a blade. I'm pretty sure that mentality during my rounds makes me **** up a few putts as it is.

I just feel so uncomfortable with the basic "pendulum" motion of the shoulders during the putt...maybe is should try putting with a revers grip - with the left hand lower on the club than the right. I don't know. Practice would help, I'm sure!
