Went out after work today to play 9.

On the 2nd hole I draw my ball down the left side of a long par 4 dogleg left to right. Right at the corner of the dogleg the left side bows out to an open space so people that draw it too much off the tee hope to find their ball there. It's an area that can't be seen from the tee.

As I walk far enough to see around the corner I see myself face to face with a black bear that's about 10-15 feet in front of me. It took me a few seconds to register that it actually was a bear until I stopped walking towards it. I see my ball about 20 yards past the bear and decide to slowly walk backwards to drop in the fairway.

When I get to the 7th tee I see the bear laying sprawled out on the 3rd green. He/she seemed harmless, but was a bit shocked as I've played this course 50+ times and have never even seen a deer there.

Did you give yourself a 2 stroke penalty for taking an unplayable?

AFAIK, black bears are pretty harmless and would scatter to the showing of your dominance, like a good wacking on the nose of the bear with your club. anything so you can play the ball as it lies.

but yeah, i would do the same thing.

You might want to get a 44 Magnum and keep it in your golf bag.

I didn't read the posts before this but it's one stroke for unplayable.

Any thoughts on Sea Island vs. Reynolds Plantation as a family vaca spot coupled with golf for me? I assume Sea Island golf is better.

Looking to possibly do a late fall trip but more looking at it for a week next summer. 2 kids are 12 and 10 girls

Thanks for any thoughts

Was it a bear or a deer?

Anyone know about Buffalo, NY-area courses? Hidden, underrated gems? Ones to avoid? Etc.

He saw a bear. He's shocked he saw a bear bc in 50+ outings he not seen a deer, a more common wildlife sighting.

never played reynolds...but i have played both sea island courses...both were comped for me...I enjoyed the plantation much more than seaside...seaside is pretty pictureesque. I would play both.....but if i had to pay for both I would have been less than impressed...if you are on a budget probably stay away from Sea Island.

Poulter gets ridiculed for complaining about his nanny getting downgraded from business class when his wife and kids (and nanny) were flying home:

http://metro.co.uk/2014/08/09/twitte...-rant-4826963/

Never actually heard of anyone getting downgraded from what they've booked - upgrades happens, but can you actually get downgraded when you've booked? I know airlines overbook flights, but didn't realize they did it for business/first class-customers also.

And while there obviously are worse things happening in this world, I don't really blame Poulter for complaining about it.

Thx. Yeah it's not cheap so while there is obv a budget for the trip(s) the sticker on these two vacation spots is about what I expect to spend regardless of where we go. I have tons of friends that have been to and loved Sea Island but just haven't heard or talked to many about Reynolds/Lake Oconee.

Golf is only a part of the equation since it is a family vacation. Really am hoping for input on the whole place.

Yeah that's right.

When I saw the bear on the green I was laughing as well. Thinking "Damn, that thing is just living the dream over there"

There would be pics posted but I left my phone in my car because I wanted to get away for a couple hours.

my brother, dad and I played Harbourtown with one of my uncle's friends who was a member (my uncle was sick, we went to visit him, he hooked up 18 as their backyard was the #6 tee box).

anyway, there are alligators all over hilton head, the locals don't even notice them.

however, when you hit your drive into the pine straw, and in order to hit your second shot, you have to turn your back to a 7-foot gator sunning itself 10 yards behind you, you both a) notice it, and b) give the ball the old foot wedge out a few more yards to put a little more distance between the two of you.

Playing bad and not being able to advance the ball are two different things. I play bad so be it, but not to be able to hit the ball is absurd.
