He always seemed like kind of a dick to me. But it was a good interview.

MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

Funny, I don't read this thread for some reason but opened it just to post about the Wadkins thing.

Unpopular Opinion Time: I had no problem with him as an announcer. At the time I felt Faldo was an upgrade so was fine with the change but in catching him on replays of majors I think he was just fine, and his work on the Senior tour now is good. I mean he's no JOHNNY but there's only one of those.

I haven't soured on Faldo although he can be a bit hard to understand at times, but now don't think that's as big of an upgrade as I did in 2007. One thing for certain is that Wadkins was a 2000% improvement over Ken Venturi, who was senile most of the last decade on the air and wasn't particularly good even before he went cray cray.

That's actually a really cool way to do it. I could see some meganits trying to take as long as fk'n possible to get their vouchers.

Have you played there before? I'd be curious to hear how pace of play is like there for a customer.

I've only played there once as the price is a little out of my league and I believe the round took exactly 4:15. From what I could tell, the marshalls do NOT **** around on this course. There was probably a half dozen of them patrolling the course with short-wave radios constantly monitoring the pace of play. They are very weary about someone gaming the policy and they are fully prepared to make a group pick up their balls and move to the next tee if necessary.

The year I played there, they actually had an incentive to play in under 4 hours as well, it was a small credit, but a credit none-the-less. It seems that one has been since abolished.

lol @ paying $150 for a round and then having some marshal pressure you the entire round.

and lol if you think they care more about pace of play (your enjoyment) then number of rounds played (their pocketbook).

A second warning will require that you pick up your ball and physically move back into position.
round is $150, good luck with that...

Personally, if I am paying $150 for a round of golf, I better be on a good pace of play and playing < 4:30.

It's not that hard to play less than a 5 hour round. . .

agreed.

just the thought of a Marshall physically grabbing my ball and taking it to the next tee is kinda funny.

Me and some friends played a course a few years ago where we had a marshall request that we do just this. We had one really bad player in our group who took a very long time to play golf, so we were given a pace-of-play warning on #9. 3 holes later the marshall comes up to us and is completely losing his mind. "YOU GUYS JUST TOOK 45 MINUTES TO PLAY 3 HOLES" (we didn't). We were playing slow, but we were MAYBE on a 4:30 pace, nothing completely out of line. Anyway, after lots of screaming at this marshall who had physically parked himself in front of my friend's ball to prevent him from playing the hole, we ended up telling him to call the cops and ****. Long story short, we eventually conceeded and picked up our balls on this par 3 and moved onto the next hole. But i have vowed to never ever ever go back and play golf at that course, I also don't play with that slow player anymore.

what was his response to "call the cops then"?

I'm not sure which I dislike more, slow play or marshals. The percentage of marshals who have any business doing their job is pretty damn close to zero. They are almost always old guys who want to "work" in exchange for free golf.

It was actually the marshall who suggested that he was going to call the cops, so we called his bluff. He reneged on that suggestion almost immediately.

45 minutes for 3 holes is exactly a 4:30 pace.

I'm afraid we'll need more information before we can make an adequate ruling.

Assuming a typical par 72 course, a 4.5 hour round results in an average of 3.75 minutes per stroke.

If the three hole sequence in question was a par 5-4-5, then hero's group played it 7.5 minutes faster than expected.

If the three hole sequence in question was a par 4-3-4 then hero's group played it 3.75 minutes behind pace.

Heaven forbid it was a 3-4-3 sequence the hero's group was 7.5 minutes behind pace.

2000 PGA on right now, lucky to have just stumbled upon it. Such an epic showdown, somewhat sullied by the outcome and Nantz's awful YES YOU MAY.

I'd never seen the entire back nine. That was a truly amazing performance by both guys. May's errant tee shots on 16 and 17 very well could have cost him the tournament, but his iron play was something else.

I had bought a 460cc slider in May with a 70g white oban O5 flex shaft off some numbers put up in a simulator from a club fitter. My brother keeps saying I've been spinning it pretty badly, and I was kind of in denial since I bought an $800 driver that sucks.

After playing yesterday morning and hitting some drives really well that just spun like crazy anyway, I asked my club what shafts I could try (my swing speed with the driver is 120-123 right now).

I hit a 77g 44.5 inch stiff fuki something shaft with the 430 cc head (the stone nuts). I was flying it 30 yards longer than my other driver with no spin, and it was a stiff (moving more right to left/left to right on misses, but the kick was just right). So annoyed.

I'm definitely gonna get a 430 cc head with a heavier shaft cut to 44.5 inches. Been driving it like crap with this 45 inch spinning machine. 430 cc head also fits my eye much better, much more like the old titleists I used to devour in college. 975j with a proforce blue/yellow shaft at 7.5 degrees was my favorite club ever.

May played incredible, but what really stuck out to me was how honed in Tigers putting was.
May was never going to win - his face says WIL more than anyone I've seen (not named Sergio).

True, his face said one thing, but his irons and putter said something else. The only time he really blinked was a killer, when he missed a birdie putt on 15 after Tiger had already dropped one from farther out. Aside from that there were no clear signs of choke. He was a Tiger miss from about six feet on the 72nd hole from winning outright, although to be fair coming off of crushing at both Pebble Beach and St. Andrews nobody in their right mind expected Tiger to miss that putt although it was hardly a gimme. While he was kind of all over the map on the last five holes or so (playoff included), he matched Tiger's score on all but one of them and didn't have a bogey.

That said, I am curious if May actually read the putt on that hole properly as a double-breaker. The turn to the left the last couple of feet seemed to surprise just about everyone.
