2nd shot on a par three. I'm in a shallow bunker to the left of the green. Two foot of bunker two foot of fringe then then green, it slopes away from me and heavily left to right, flags about five feet on. I aim well left get it to pitch on the fringe. It hit the hole and lipped out but I was left with a four foot up hill putt coming back.

380 yard straightaway par 4. Hit a nice drive down the left side but still in the fairway. Had to go over a tree, hit a nice 8 iron from about 135-140 right into the sun. Felt good but I couldn't see anything because the sun/tree combo, walked up to the green thinking it went over the back since I couldn't find it, my dad yells up "look in the hole". Boom! Totally stoked.

Looking for advice on getting a club fitting, I don't fully trust the fitters to give me a 100% accurate assessment on what I need and rather will end up trying to sell me whatever stuff they have available. Is there anything I should ask in particular or can I even get a print out of my numbers then post it here and see what people think? Thanks

if you want a truly professional fitting, you're going to have to pay several hundred dollars.

find someone who makes their living club fitting, not someone who makes their living teaching golf lessons and does club fitting on the side.

i paid $80 for a fitting and it was basically a complete waste of money. the fitting part i could have done by myself...height, wrist to floor measurement, and finger length. done. standard length/standard lie.

then, we tried different shafts and different club heads.

my shaft choices were stock regular and stiff. i had the choice between two different models of club head. my numbers were roughly similar with every combination, and in the end, his advice was "go with the one that feels right."

powerful advice.

i mentioned that i was a bit concerned about my lie angle and that i've always felt like my clubs were too long. he said that he tries different lengths and lie angles with people all the time and folks tend to hit the same shots whether the club is flat or upright.

brilliant.

so $80 later, i've discovered it doesn't really matter which shaft, clubhead, or lie angle you have!

So I have started taking lessons again, and finally found an instructor who knows how to explain the golf swing. He is like Mr. Miyagi because we never actually hit balls during the lesson, but this past week I went out and was hitting my driver just as far if not further than my friends. I even managed to drive the green on a 311 yard par 4.

I was having a problem with releasing the club, not really understanding what it meant, but here is a drill he had me doing, and wow it actually works.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQlcKEd3IHo

Fast forward to the 2 minute mark, and I have been doing this movement for an hour a day everyday for 2 weeks, plus whenever I am bored watching tv. I didn't realize this little movement was responsible for so much distance.

That tip has eliminated my chicken wing that I had because I wasn't releasing the club correctly. That tip combined with me learning and getting used to a new grip has helped immensely.

long dogleg right par 4, was 220 to front of green and maybe 230-235 to pin, Was on the right side of fairway with a huge tree in the way. Had to aim a good 30 yards left of the green to have any chance. Hit a huge slicking 3 wood landing a few yards on stopping 10 feet below the hole.

I'd bet a Titleist rep would do a really good job of fitting you. Or probably any club rep for that matter.

Going for the first lesson of my life tomorrow with my local clubs pro. Friend got a lesson with him before and had nothing but good things to say about him.

Super excited to hopefully maybe not suck as much anymore!

thanks for the response, I'm not sure you'd find someone in my area that could make a living exclusively doing club fittings tbh. The guy I'm going to see runs his own academy and does lessons along with fittings although he does have all of the trackman equipment which no-one else does.

I was hoping if I did the fitting and got a printout of my numbers and took down some other details ppl ITT think are important I could post and see if the more experienced golfers could point me in the right direction but I could be wrong and it just doesn't work like that. Like I don't have much of an idea what information I should be looking for or what's the most important etc

I'm worried that if I get fitted by someone from Titleist they'll always try and sell me something Titleist by the end even if another club would be better for me. I'd like impartial advice which is why I'm posting ITT.

I got fitted at Roger Dunn by a Ping Rep, 2 hours $120 I think but a discount on equipment.

Pretty quickly they were able to deduce that my irons were fine except I needed to have my wedges flattened and the loft adjusted. The driver took about an hour, hitting various combinations and then making adjustments, all from different manufacturers. The Ping rep would give me a club and have me hit it about 10 times while he went to borrow stuff from the Titleist/Taylormade guys. Not sure if he got paid on commission, but it didn't seem that way.

I thought it was a good experience and would help someone that was very ill-fit, but that someone just wasn't me. I got a nice little printout with all my stats which might have been worth the price by itself.

I had another fitting years ago by True Temper where they had me hit a 6 iron with wires in it to see how I load the shaft, then they rebuilt my current set to those specs. I was all gaga over the fact that the rep was able to pick my favorite club based on how I load and which one of my current shafts was closest to that, then proceeded to drop $$$ on new shafts. It really didn't affect my game like I thought, which means at all I did find it interesting that a Titleist set had their frequencies so all over the place. My set had a few S's and R's even though it was an X set. IIRC only 2 shafts were even close to the right flex.

My current set is probably just as off, but I really don't gaf and am probably not good enough to know the difference.

i dont think getting custom fitted for your irons are gonna have a big impact on game improvement for the avg golfer. unless your current clubs are completely inadequate for your skill level. i.e. single handicap with high swing speed using large game improvement club heads with senior flex graphite shafts.

iron fitting is useful if you can try out various shafts and you are peculiar on shot trajectory. i prefer a very flat trajectory on my irons so after some tests i preferred the flight of the kbs c-taper shafts. the kbs tour shafts were noticeably higher in trajectory and the tru temper dynamic gold were a few grams heavier. my new iron shafts weren't a game changer but it did give me some added confidence and that helped my consistency.

driver fitting on the other hand, can have huge benefits to the avg golfer. most off the shelf drivers are too long, too heavy and not the right combination flex and tip. since hitting the fairway is so crucial to scoring low on a hole, having a driver u are confident with can be worth getting properly fitted. if your fitter said those things about your driver then its unfortunate u ran into an incompetent one.

Well, getting fitted is more about the correct shaft flex, length, and lie angle. The brand of the club probably isn't of much importance.

I mentioned Titleist because I think their reps really know what their doing. At the same time, their clubs tend to be for more expert players.

I'm a PING guy, and recommend their stuff to everyone.. So if you could get fitted for PINGS by a rep, that's what I'd do. They will definitely have a set up for you.

So my hour long lesson was easily the best $40 Ive spent yet on golf. It truly is amazing how quickly a good imstructor can find a few flaws in your swing and instantly know whats vausing it and how to fix it.

Suoer stoked to go out again. Ive been pretty down on golfing in general due to sucking but now I feel like a new person wrt this silly sport. Its crazy how watching a couple balls fly like thier supposed to will change a man instantly.

Stupid game.

I'm going to say that if the guy has spent the money on the trackman, he's at least very likely going to know a lot more about correct club fitting than some shmoe at a local club or a golf retailer.

also +1 to what Richard16oz said with respect to not being fitted for a brand but for specifications.

After a few months of being back in the game and self-fixing everything, I took a lesson a couple weeks ago and totally changed my grip (which was horrible). First few range sessions were so bad I skipped men's club because I wasn't confident to do anything on the course, and didn't want to revert back to old, ****ty swing. I'm glad I stuck with it this time (I've been frustrated with changes before so just bailed), as the last few range sessions it has really come together and I'm feeling really good about. Only took about a thousand balls before I could do ANYTHING with a full swing (I had the half swing down pat), and for it to not feel as awkward as hell, and I'm hoping I can keep it up.
