Once I saw the answer and thought about it a bit, it didn't surprise me. If you've got a 30+ handicapper getting 2 (sometimes 3) shots per hole, he's probably going to have a couple of net eagles and birdies. Partner that with another high handicapper, or even some one who can just play very steadily and close to his handicap for a lot of net pars, and obviously the best score is going to go pretty low, even without any sandbagging going on.

I'm considering going to the Shell Houston Open this week for a day, any advice? Never been to a golf event and I'm really getting into the game so I think it would be awesome to attend.
Yeah, it's pretty neat to see an event in person. I definitely second the recommendation about spending some time at the range. I would walk around the course a bit if you've never been there and try to find a particular hole that might be interesting--a driveable par 4, maybe a par-5 that's reachable in 2, that sort of thing. I'd also recommend trying to find a spot where you can see more than one hole at once--the action can get pretty slow at times, so it's nice to be able to turn around and see something else. There are a couple of threads in the forum with a lot of tips about watching an event.

Just looking at the course map a little. If it were me I'd set up around 12 green 13 tee. At that spot you can see those 2 holes and also 15 green and 16 tee is close as well. Make sure you get something with tee times/groupings so you know who is comming up and adjust you position as needed. The range is a must like others have said. Enjoy.

I loved watching Tiger hit balls on the range a couple of years back (when he showed up to the Nelson because Nelson was still alive). It was pretty funny how he would get angry at a ball that faded 2 yards, so then he'd hit the next one and it drew 2 yards and he was satisfied.

Coolest part was when he aimed over at the range cart about 115 yards away parked off the side of the range and dumped it in the back of the barrel sitting in the back of it. Then he teed of a wedge, took a full swing and hit it backwards. /told this story before

Also, this is just my opinion, but I love to pick a group and follow them for 18 holes and see how pros really manage their game. This is almost impossible to do at some venues I'm sure though.

At the nationwide event I went to, we heard Jon Mills was tearing it up so we followed him for 9+ holes and watched him shoot 63. As for game management, the first hole we watched him on was a par 5 and he teed off with an iron in his hand and I was like "who is this hack?". He hit three pretty standard irons shots on the hole and made birdie so I stopped doubting him. I definitely had more fun following him than hanging out at a single hole, although the crowds were pretty thin since it was a nationwide event in Cambridge ontario.

jon mills is pretty legit. he earned his pga card on nationwide one year, and was close to keeping it, but finished out of the top-100 on the money list. he's played somewhat fewer events since then.

Just booked a round for Sunday afternoon weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The course isn't sure if they will have taken the tarps off their greens by then, but I have faith. I can't wait to dribble my first shot 50 yards down the fairway.

Got this in an email today:

Quote:

Dear Member,

Tomorrow (Thursday 31st March) we will be running a Hole in One competition on Hole 11 (from the Black Tees) for all players playing a full round.
The prize for a hole in one is $10,000 cash.
The competition is open to all players and the entry price is $8.00.

One of the most unclassy things I have seen. Slightly embarrassed for the club at the moment, and will definitely be talking to our owners about it.

I was so tilted last year when I came across one of those on a public course I was playing. It's one of the more respectful courses that I play and we get to #17 and have to listen to some guy give a schpiel before we tee off, I felt like I was being accosted in a parking lot or something.

I don't mind the idea, but charging $8 for a 40,000-1 shot at 10k is gross. The insurance package for that would be $100 max I think. But even if they are self financing they are robbing people.

Was down in South Carolina this past wkend on a golf trip with some friends.

Highlights:
Played USC home course Cobblestone and it was damn impressive
Played Clemson Walker Course, very cool

Lowlights:
Weather never got about 50 deg and it rained much of the time. Literally carried the ball 20-25 yards less.
Hit lots of 5-woods into par 4s, I now have mad respect for an LPGA pro

Pic of #17 at Clemson. Par 3 designed after their logo (tiger paw).

wtf at charging $? I think it would be cool to go play somewhere that had this. They just have some guy stand on the tee all day to verify if someone actually gets it. I would think the extra play they get would offset the insurance. Or maybe just charge $1. $8 is ridiculous.

That's actually a good idea and I'm surprised that clubs never do this, or at least I've never seen it. Base the cost on the clientele and come up with some kind of decent prize.

$8 for $10,000 sounds like a money grab.

Got some more details on that promo. It's a semi private club, with about 20% member play/80% public. The Hole in One promo is "free" for daily fee guys, it's going to be included in the normal rate (which isn't going to be changed specifically for this). The $8 is for members who want to participate since all our greens/cart fees are included in our monthlies. Also, they bought an insurance package for the deal, which cost $229.

I still think this is super trashy, and will tell the owners that when I see them. It's cool for the public players who are getting a freeroll basically, and I can see it generating the 4-5 extra rounds they need to break even on it. But charging members $8 is gross. Something like $1 to "register" for the promo due to the insurance policy needing that would be fine. $8 is a money grab.

Playing Highland Gate golf course this weekend. It's an old school parkland golf course that's only a par 69, but it's a beauty. A definite throwback to old school course design. Can't wait!

As I promised in my other thread, here's the beginning of a series of trip reports from my golf trip last week to Columbia, SC.

I'll spare you guys of a hole by hole shot tracker and use these TR's more as a review of the golf course, share some funny stories, and maybe post a few pics.

Golf Club of South Carolina Crickentree:

Kicking off the year with a fun trip with friends, 90 holes in 60 hours, and hopefully some good times to be had with my three friends.

We had some good prop bets lined up for the duration of the trip including the following:
- Low round
- Low total
- Longest shot onto a green (ignore GIR)
- On-going Snake (3-putt)
- Most total birdies
- Best bounceback (difference in score b/w two holes, gross)

To kick off our first hole of the trip, my buddy hit his ball in the creek of this par 5.

Impressively he saved par.

The rest of the round was full of loose shots, lots of woodknocking by our golf balls, and cold weather. This was our warmest round at around 52 degrees.

Here's a shot of me at #17. 220 over nothing but water = fun.

Highlight of the round was when two idiots behind us cold-topped their tee shots. They are about 290 out on a downhill lie from the rough and insisted on waiting for us to clear the green (including whisting at us to hurry up). They ended up both taking six more shots to get on the green.

3 single-handicap Ohioans and a collective 30 ish bogeys and only 2 birdies in the group. Seven snakes, 5 lost balls, and someone who shot over 100. Solid.

Next up, Cobblestone Park GC (home of USC Gamecocks).

Did I read that right that one of you is a single digit hdcp and shot over 100 in the round? Makes me feel much better about my bad rounds, that much better players than me can just totally lose it for a day.

Blowups happen to everyone. Single digits usually have a very hard time posting 100, but I can see it happening on that course early in the season. No game or feel and a course that looks like there's more water than land.

The guy who shot 106 in our group is probably around an 8ish handicap.

At that course it's pretty easy to make big numbers. Block a few tee shots, try to pull off a few hero escapes from the trees and catch some lumber, etc.

It would have actually been more beneficial had the trees been labeled as laterals because then he wouldn't have needed to play from them.

Nonetheless, you add a course like that with plenty of potential for big numbers, winter rust, and absolutely zero feel for short shots on greens and he couldn't break 100.

FWIW, the other 3 of us (who are all 0-2 HCP) didn't shoot over 85 on our horrible rounds in the most miserable of conditions, so the 106 was a clear outlier.
