Just went to the library (remember those things?) and got Dave Pelz's Damage Control. Went to get his short game bible but they didn't have it. This one looks pretty cool, though. Can't wait. I really enjoyed the technical level of his bible.

I thought Harvey Penick's little red book sucked. It said your grip should be as if you were picking up a yardstick. "Just put your hands on it and wiggle it a little - that's your grip". LOL.

On TW '07 last night I took my created golfer "Rory McIlroy" and played the Old Course at St. Andrews from the tips with expert pin locations with only a 5 iron and putter just to see if I could break par.

I shot a 69 (-3). 1 double, 2 bogies, 7 birdies. 32 front (-4) 37 back (+1). Basically if I couldn't reach the GIR on a par 4 I was left with a partial punch shot. The good news is the greens are huge so it wasn't hard to give myself a putt. And the greens are flat so it wasn't hard to 1-putt a lot.

random bs golf story: on #16 of the area's toughest course yday, rain/storm is coming.

piped my driver straight down the middle maybe 290, leaving about 205 left. crushed my 3 hybrid to 15 feet for eagle.

now it's pouring. and lightning. but i'll be damned if i'm leaving this short. off my putter i'm already seeing it going in. lipped out, past 6 feet.

now it's REALLY lightning. uncle's holding the flag bitching that i better hurry up.

aaaand i'm missed the comebacker.

went from eagle to par. which also means i lose to both my dad and brother by 1. only 16 holes. still.

argh.

league tonight. golfing well hopefully i can blow someone up.

Is there any rule about using a womens 3 wood in competition?

Yes, you must wear womens panties as well to qualify.

I don't know the answer but I'm pretty sure the answer is "no".

seriously: I think the answer is yes.
Firstly, how would one find out? - it would be too hard to regulate.
Secondly, who cares if a man is using a womans club? - advantage everyone else, right?

Quick Google search: Can men use womens golf clubs?

Answer:
Yes, there is no problem with this. Women's club are very light with very whippy shadfts and the club heads have a lot more loft than mens' clubs. All these help get the ball in the air easier. They are also a little shorter, as generally women aren't as tall as men. Another problem with ladies clubs is the grips are very thin, and too small for a man with average size hands. Ladies clubs are not really built for distance, so you may be better with mens clubs.

If I could offer you a suggestion. Simply get mens' clubs that suit you. If you are small height wise- you could get custom fit, in this process the right shaft would be found for you, as well as a club head with a reasonable loft for you. The lie angle can also be adjusted to allow you to get the best from your clubs.

If you struggle getting the ball in the air, you could get a whippy shaft, and even get loft added to the irons.

The way fuluck framed his question, the answer would be what I wrote, or "no". Not "yes".

Just was curious was in a rush at golfsmith one time and grabbed a 3 wood off the rack and liked the way it hit. So I bought it, realized about a month later it was a womens club. I hit it well but am playing in an amateur open labor day weekend and wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get DQ'd or something if I played it

Hey now, no shame here. I actually like the club. I have no problem using it. The best part is it has some pink inlay in the shaft to. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get in any rules trouble

Just so you know ahead of time, putting a towel down to keep your knees from getting dirty is against the rules. It's considered building a stance and is a two stroke penalty.

I've never tried hybrids before, but I'm considering them. Right now I have a set of taylor made r7 irons, r7 driver, ping putter, and ping 3wood/5wood, cleveland s. wedge. I don't know what it is about woods but I can't really mirror my swing when I use them on the fairway or off the tee. It seems like about 65-75% of the time I end up topping the ball. Are woods outdated? What is the advantage of a hybrid over a wood in terms of yardage/accuracy/difficulty? I've considered chucking my 3w and 5w off a cliff, and just buying a two and one iron instead. Thoughts?

Hybrids replace irons, not woods. Although the 2 hybrid is usually the equivalent to a 5 wood. For almost every golfer, the 5-iron should be the longest iron in the bag going with 3 and 4 hybrids to replace the 3 and 4 irons. If you even have to think about asking, you've got no business hitting a 1 or 2 iron.

Woods are by no means outdated, hopefully this clears up some of the confusion.

I see. So you prefer woods only off the tee then, while using hybrids for the fairway only? Also, do you believe 3i/4i are much harder to hit than 4hyb/3hyb or is it close?

Modern drivers are only useful off the tee, but other than that there is no physical reason why you can't hit any other club anywhere. Nothing wrong with hitting a hybrid off the tee, nothing wrong with hitting a 3 wood from the fairway. It's all a matter of what the individual golfer is comfortable with.

For all amateurs (with a very few exceptions) 3i/4i's are much harder to hit than hybrids and it's not even close.

RaiN, I just started using a 3 hybrid this year (first hybrid) and I strike it far better from the fairway than I ever did my 3 wood or 4 wood. I know what you're talking about and the solution is.... yes, get a hybrid. It does wonders for that 2nd shot on a long par 5. And it makes golf funner, which is the most important thing.

Hybrids are significantly easier to hit both off the tee and off the deck compared to 2, 3, 4-irons
