When people have their guard down, for whatever reason (drunk, unaware a microphone is on, being spied on), it is usually the best way to see what kind of person they really are (right, Mel Gibson?). I think for those of us who have always known that Negreanu's public image is no where close to his petty, petulant and self-absorbed behavior when the camera is off just find it funny that he was caught exposing his true self. True, if it was said off-the-record and the writer reported it anyway, then the writer is a douche, but nevertheless, it was a moment when Negreanu's shields were down.

Watching the clip with Lansing tells us two things - First, Negreanu himself was and is well aware that using the c-word was something no classy person would ever do outside of joking with close friends, and certainly not for an article that was to be published. That's why we get his flailing excuse that it was supposed to be off-the-record-sorta-kinda-I-hope. Second, he knew it had a great chance to offend women in general because that particular word has that type of power. Whether or not his half-hearted apology in that clip was forced upon him by Pokerstars or he is self-aware enough to try to do damage control before Pokerstars steps in is up in the air.

As far as Pokerstars catering to Negreanu instead of the other way around, it is an absolute joke not to think that Pokerstars holds all the power in that relationship. Pokerstars was doing just fine before Negreanu's weird skin site collapsed and he joined them. Pokerstars would also do just fine if he left. Can you really think of anyone who would quit the site because Negreanu is no longer there?

Also, because Lederer (Annie's brother obviously) controls the only real alternative poker site for Negreanu to sign with, and will never sign him to anything, what kind of negotiating power do you think Negreanu continues to have?

As far as what Pokerstars thinks of using the type of language Negreanu did, one just needs to type Negreanu's quote into the Pokerstars client chat box and see how Pokerstars reacts. If they would ban someone for typing that in a chatbox while playing poker, why should they expect any less civility from one of their representatives in the press?

Gobbo does not think the C-word is on the level of the N-word, but he is wrong. You only use the C or N word if you harbor a level of anger and hostility towards that corresponding group of people that goes far beyond the immediate situation. Many of us would never use the N-word against anyone, even if a singular Black person did us great injustice and harm beyond any reason, because we are aware that it is an insult that extends beyond the one person in question. If we did, using the excuse "well, THAT person was a N-word, I didn't meant it beyond that..." is feeble and unacceptable, and you know it. The same goes for the C-word and women. And not because we (men) think or don't think it is as harmful, but because WOMEN think it is. And they do. How young, male poker players, some of whom are just as angry towards women as demonstrated, view the word is almost irrelevant. And you know this too.

Can we finally put to rest the notion that Negreanu is the classiest guy in poker? If he is so classy and fun-loving and cheerful, how come he has no poker superstar peers that express fondness for him on a personal level? Instead, he seems to have a beef with everyone and they mostly just ignore him.

I can't believe you took the time to write that huge ass post and got pretty much everything wrong.

DN is great advertisement for poker and thinking he didn't do a good job getting more deposits for PS is just plain silly. Ofcourse he should watch out what he says because he is a sort of role model (for lack of a better word) but your entire post is just hateful and ignorant, no way can you take someone's words out of context and claim that.

Also I think everyone loves to have DN at a poker table for a multitude of reasons.

if he called her a **** off the record, who cares. everyone here has probably called someone a name at one point or another, but you're not famous so nobody took it and used it in an article.

Tell that to Jennifer Harman, John Juanda, Erik Lindgren, Todd Brunson, Evelyn Ng, Kathy Leibert etc. and they will laugh in your face.

You have no ****ing clue.

Daniel only beefs with the people who have it coming. Like the cheats/bad ppl in the business: Russ Hamilton, Ultimate Bet, Annie Duke, Men The Master, etc.

I don't know.... it seems like he got a few things right in that post, especially the part about his sponsorship. If anything ever goes sour with PokerStars chances are he's not going to see as lucrative an offer from any other site.

A bit naive to think anything you say to a reporter is off the record.

The word he used doesn't really matter to me. He could have called her a f***** tool and I would have thought it was inappropriate and it doesn't matter if most people agreed with him. People in his position shouldn't say crap like that.

His explanation was lame. Maybe it seems a bit hypocritical but I think I would have had more respect for him if he just said something like "Sorry if my choice of words offended anyone. I have a long history with her since I first came to Vegas. Boy do I hate that f***** c***."

Either you said something and you stick by it, or you realize you shouldn't have said it an apologize. None of this wimpy I said it but nobody was supposed to hear it crap. Maybe DN should be playing in the women's events.

You are my hero. I wish I'd said that. I did go all mouthy spouty here and here and, after a few drinks, put a poll up here.

PokerStars has responded to me via email and I'm waiting to hear whether they'll mind my posting it on the blog. I found it quite interesting.

There was a funny story about Devilfish and the C word in a magazine a few years ago.

Devilfish was in a big poker tourney that was about to start. He and the other players were sitting at the table waiting for the cards to get in the air and Devilfish starting to tell a joke to pass the time.

Halfway through the joke the Tourney started and the cards were dealt. About that time he was delivering the punchline which contained an F bomb.
The female dealer quickly called the Floor and said Devilfish had used an F bomb. And the floor explained that you cant use the F word.

Devilfish asked the floor if he could use the C word and the floor stammered, ah err, there is nothing in the rules against it.
Devilfish turned to the female dealer and said Your a "C word"

I like DN a lot (as much as you can i suppose for now knowing someone) but I do think he comes off kinda lame with some of hsi quirks.. "hey hey hey" or "SUP WITH IT?? weird face" etc. Not a big deal or anything, just makes him look nerdy and he'd be better off not doing **** like that imo
