It's not an issue of understanding. The issue is responsibility. He's just a punk. A rebel. Who's the biggest bad ass in this show? Gus. Who's got the most mundane day to day life? Gus. Mastermind crime is more work than normal daily grinders, something Jesse has spent his whole life avoiding. So his new rebellion is stealing from Gus, making quick hits with his junky loser friends, away from all that hard work and responsibility.

The rehab scene COMPLETELY fits in with Jessie's personality. Yes he is struggling with his own sobriety, but never for a second did he ever consider giving up selling drugs. The scene at the gas station where he was telling the girl how great meth is even though she had never done it showed that he doesn't care about other people's addictions, only his own.

Skyler's gambling story was one of the best scenes of the entire series so far.

People really comparing this to The Wire? Ridiculous.

Anyone else notice that every time Gus meets with someone in his trailer, he has a pre-fab plate of vegetables ready to eat?

I guess "never get high on your own supply" applies to fast-food chicken purveyors as well as drug dealers.

I thought the actress was brilliant, and enjoyed the parallels with Walt's lying, the halting/awkward improvisation, the fact it only floats because the listener is so conditioned to believe you etc-- but while I was watching, I didn't really think it was her, it pulled me out a little bit.

Time Magazine's James Poniewozik called this week's episode Breaking Bad's "Pine Barrens".

I don't see why he'd take the risk of offing him unless Walt goes rogue.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Walt recovered fully from the cancer right?

Sick season, love this show.

One thing I noticed:

When Walt was leaning over the tank and it looked like there was a bullet hole in his reflections head (as someone else pointed out), I think this was the mark left by Jesse in the last episode where he comes down the stairs and starts banging on different tanks and stuff.

Right after Walt cleans the smudge (or dent or whatever it is), we see Jesse steal 0.3 pounds of meth.

I'm sure this was intentional foreshadowing for something, either Walt having to "smudge out" Jesse, or Jesse "putting a bullet hole" in Walt's head or something along those lines.

Hopefully not as in awesome, suspenseful episode that introduces a Russian that we never hear about again...

...until he sneaks in the door at Holstein's just behind Meadow to take his revenge.

no, the smudge scene is a pretty strong sign of something. why do you think they would show that scene at all? because it was artisctic? and it's not like it hasn't be done before in this show. subtle clues are everywhere. such as walt's target # for last season.

This is the only reason I put any credence into the theory at all. Other than foreshadowing, there really is no other reason to include the scene at all. We already knew before this that Walt is very meticulous when it comes to his lab, and as i have said before this show does not waste a second of screen time. Every scene has a purpose even if it is not readily apparent at the moment.

This is so wrong. Gilligan loves using foreshadowing/metaphors/clues etc, the interview he did about the finale showed that if you hadnt already spotted it.

I think he treats money laundering like Jerry Seinfeld treats tax write offs. He understands it is importance, but doesn't get that he needs to pay taxes on his income, he just figured he would launder the money and become protected and just need to pay saul like 5% or w/e.

Based on the preview,

Spoiler:
It looks like Walt and Jesse have a contamination problem in the lab and the entire episode focuses on that. I'm hoping the "Pine Barrens" talk is about two people being trapped in an unfamiliar location and the psychological suspense that accompanies that, and not, you know, Russians that show up and leave story threads unfinished.
