i should mention that everyone needs to cut their roster down to at most 30 active, less if you want to have roster space to sign any free agents. which means at least 42 players (81 if everyone leaves room for 3 FA's) currently on rosters will be available during free agency.

Also i had some of the rookies minor league status wrong when i took the screen shots (Heyward and Brantley off the top of my head), so a couple teams might have their active roster #'s off by 1 or 2. The spreadsheet is updated though.

Can you refresh my memory on who loses minors eligbility? People who crossed a particular playing time threshold in the majors in real life?

Nice work. Lars Anderson is still a rookie. Other than that, I think it looks good.

I haven't seen this documented anywhere, so I'll ask:

Can an owner drop a previously signed player into free agency and then re-bid on that same player from a starting salary of $4? Or would the previous owner not be allowed to bid on that player this offseason?

Opinions?

It wasn't discussed but i think it makes sense that you can bid whatever you want on any free agent - regardless if you were the previous owner.

Another question:

Do true minor leaguers need to be dropped at the same time as FA or can that be done closer to or during the rookie draft? They wouldn't be eligible for the FA auction anyway, but it would give a bit more flexibility to pre-season roster tweaks.

Actually, I kind of like the idea of clearing space during/after the draft because if you miss out on a rookie you want during, then you wouldn't have screwed yourself by clearing that roster spot before the draft started.

But on the other hand, that late-drop would then not be available for others to draft/plan to draft.

I don't disagree with the idea in theory, but that will likely lead to a lot of big contracts getting dumped this year now that everyone has a better feel for player values. Not saying this is good or bad, just something to consider, since it would have a huge impact on the FA market.

This FA drop thing seems tricky to me. Will we know who gets dropped before the FA auction starts? Or will we do it blindly, so no one actually knows who's on the market?

For example, if stud catcher gets dropped by Owner A (maybe overpriced and expendable), and Owner B sees this player hit the market in real-time, Owner B could then make a cut of his own in order to either fill that positional need or clear payroll from a position of depth to make a run at that signing.

But if it's done blindly, Owner B may decide to keep his own catcher (even though he's nowhere near as desirable as the stud FA to-be) or a costly player, thus impacting Owner B's FA strategy and likely his 2011 roster.

Do you see what I'm getting at? I can be convoluted sometimes.

I kind of like keeping it in one thread but can post a new one if more people chime in. My roster looks correct, so I just need to decide who to keep and who to cut by a certain date right?

I know that it's a 5% increase each season and I thought we were going to just round to the nearest $1. If that were the case though, then guys who were at $4 and $5 in 2010 would still be the same price in 2011 because their 5% wouldn't be enough to round up on.

I don't remember, but did we decide on a cutoff for the salary increase to operate outside that 5% rule?

Also, how many decimal places are we using for the rounding? Two? So 1.45 would round up to 2.00, is what I mean.

I don't see why anyone should have to know who you're keeping until the deadline (which is yet to be set). You just have to make your best guess at who is going to be kept/available.

and i think it was 5%/minimum of $1 increase that was agreed on pretty sure.

This seems like a fair way to do it. My thought was everyone just submit a list of players they want to cut to either a commish or their own individual spreadsheet that then gets locked at the deadline (granted, this may be more work than it's worth). If the cuts were sent via PM, they could just sit there until they're ready to be viewed. Or we could have a third-party collect them, if there are objections to that (wouldn't want to accidentally see the other guy's hand, so to speak).

I would assume that they were going to get dropped anyway. If you now realize that you overpaid for A-Rod by $100 or something (hey, just an example), it's got to be in your best interest to drop him whether you can bid again or not. So I think they're just totally separate things, and yeah, I absolutely think that free agent bidding should be open to all.

I dont see why a previous owner should be excluded from bidding on a player that they released from the previous year. Once you cut the player you are running the risk of not winning him in the FA auction, that seems like enough of a risk to me.

Cool, thanks for the input on that stuff Levarkin and Coff. If anyone else has any thoughts or objections about the drops or FA rules, now's the time to talk about them.
