Sorry I was being attacked by a bunch of amateur golfers for carrying 14 clubs instead of 11. I thought that was weird of them.

A 26 or 28 handicap should play to their skill sets (all golfers really). Their skill set does not include good ball striking. Thus hitting a club that is by its nature hard to hit doesn't make any sense.

I'll give you an example. I played with a 22 handicap client a month or so ago. On one hole he was 215 out and I suggested he hit a 7 iron then wedge onto the green, 2 putts and he will have a bogey. Will he do that every time? No, of course not but he will make bogey or better WAY more often than wailing on a long iron.

He hit 3 iron and made a mess of the hole. After the round he asked me to give my thoughts on "what he was doing wrong" WRT his swing. I mean I gave him a plan that would have likely produced a better result and he chose to ignore it. That's fine but just don't wonder why your scores never get better.

And for the record, I could not care less what you put in your bag. I was simply posting a reality. High handicappers and really mid handicappers simply should look at making the game as manageable as possible if they want to reduce their scores. Trying hero shots from 180 yards+ is not the recipe for improvement.

meh, I pretty much always punch out with a 3 iron also. Its really the only club I can reliably keep <20 feet off the ground for the first 30-50 yards and certainly the only one I can curve both ways on a low trajectory. There is no way in hell I could keep a 6 iron low enough if I am in the trees. I shoot in the 90s fwiw.
Hood a 6 iron- turns it into a 3 iron

ARC: I stopped hitting anything below 6i for about a month (at the beginning of this season), and saw huge improvements in my game. Instantly lowered my scores by about 8 strokes.

(not including tee shots)

What part of "I don't hit my 3i noticeably worse than any other iron" don't you professional golfers understand?

Short game is where I piss away strokes, not from 150-200.

Oh but bwslim played golf with 1 high cap once and saw one bad shot.

If bwslim ever learned to hit his long irons he probably could have gone pro.

I highly doubt the bolded is true but GG.

Oh and...lol...high "cap". I have a much better visual picture of you after this terminology.

ARC,

Have you ever played on a team and actually had to listen and do what the coach says?

Punching out with a 3iron is mostly terrible minus the very situational 'I need to hit it 150+ yards and keep it low'. There's no reason to deny the forgiveness of using a club with more loft when punching out and by using more loft you can control the rollout better.

I'm not saying that you don't have some good shots to affirm your confirmation bias, but holy **** man, you don't know what you're talking about. If you hit your 4iron CONSISTENTLY like you did in that story about 'that one time', why don't you always lay up to 190 on every hole? Sounds like it would be the numbers play. Think about why it's not, and you'll slowly understand what we're talking about. Put the rage down and think it through calmly.

just try hitting a 7i and lower for a couple of rounds and report back. Don't question it, just do it. What's the worst that can happen? Your caddie gets pissed off? You get booed off the course? Commentators make fun of you? No harm in just trying it out imo.

this is where the mentality of the player comes into play. I basically play a half dozen times a year now (hoping to get up to ~20 in the next 12 months though) and would never consider doing this because I am trying to make as many birdies and pars as possible without caring if my bad holes are 7s or 11s. I could probably shoot better if I hit 3 iron off of every par 4 under 390 and every hole with OB on either side. However, its a lot more fun to bomb driver and hope I have a 9 iron in on the 430 yard par 4 and if I hit it OB then tee it up again than hit 6 iron, 8 iron, and then wedge in and hope to make a putt for par. This would almost certainly allow me to break 90 pretty much every round, but I would rather shoot 100 with 2 birdies and 4 pars than make 15 bogeys, a double, and 2 pars. Plus yoloing it up gives a player like me a chance to shoot 82 and playing it safe wouldn't.

I keep forgetting that this is just a subforum for conversation and that it doesn't necessarily mean people are here to try to get better. I'm gonna bow out for now. Sorry for arguing and perpetuating a debate.

Meh, plenty of posters voted for me as who they'd want to play with. And it's not because I carry 7woods and 11 woods like bwslim - it's because I shoot from the hip and rip my 2iron 230 into the wind and then whip my c0ck out in the middle of the fairway and take a piss while giving 0 F***s.

KEEP HATIN

Hiding someone and then seeing this exchange is like a well struck 3 iron. It almost never happens but, man, that feeling.

For the record, I'm a 12 and I carry driver, 3w, 3h, 5 through wedges.

people that shoot 100 do not have 2 birdies, unless its the round of their lives.
