3i is a -EV club for most players. You're not special, ARC. I'll concede it could be good for some punch outs but if you're taking a full swing with it you're losing value, so to speak.
Re-read every one of my posts. Then if you still have questions I'll just point you to the right posts to re-read (for a "third" time).

Every club in my bag is -EV if you attribute neutral EV to a par shot (same can be said for almost every club used by 90%+ of the posters itt)*. So again, tell me why carrying 13 clubs is better than playing with 14? Hint: It's not. Because if we played that game then the only club I really should be hitting is my driver and wedges. I'm so bad at putting I should just pick up my ball on the green and write down "3". Yet I STILL putt everything out! Even though I have no business trying to make those putts!!! Imagine that!

*A better definition of "EV" may be EVORC "Expected Value Over Replacement Club" And if I leave my 3i at home and play with 13 clubs for no good reason, then the replacement club is the 4i. My 3i has +EVORC in relation to the 4i. Hope this clarifies things! Now...once I get another hybrid, the EVORC of my 3i will be -EVORC, because that new hybrid will likely be a better club. However, since I DON'T OWN IT YET, I will keep the 3i in my ****ing bag.

Cool bro. He probably also hits his 4i 215 yards and dead straight. And he probably is a multi-millionaire who can go out tomorrow and buy a bunch of hybrids (or just get them for free! Or better yet, be PAID to use them!)

Here's my take on the ARC vs. Rest of Thread 3i debate:

ARC - by your own admission, you are a 26 handicap mainly because you piss away shots around the green. Fortunately for you, the easiest way to lower your handicap relatively quickly is by improving your short game. So sure, keep the 3i if it helps you in any way, or lifts your mood during ****ty rounds, or whatever - but I think if the short game is really where you're lacking, with a little bit of practice you should be in the 80's pretty much every round. And whether you have the 3i or hybrid in your bag probably won't make too much of a difference.

I would still golf with ARC even if he carried his 3I.

I never found 3 iron to be that difficult to get a hang of. I'm assuming 2 iron tho is where it gets hard

I just checked the closet to see what clubs I had in there. Some old broken clubs that aren't worth fixing, my 2 iron, an old 4 wood with what I can only assume to be papyrus grip, and Tom Cruise.

None of those are coming out any time soon. Everyone relax.

Keeping the ball in play is boring insofar as it merits hitting 3 iron off the tee with the present state of my driver. However, when I hit driver in play it works fine. I did shoot an 81 on a 7000+ yard course last year so it is possible for me to play well. In my last 3 rounds I have hit at least 6 tee shots OB in each round and failed to break 90 though. Driver has been an issue since age 16 though (when I got a car and started spending free time with friends instead of at the golf course). I peaked at 14 when I couldn't hit the ball more than 240, but had a short game I spent 20+ hours a week on and found ways to get up and down all the time. I know that I will never get back to that level, but I am still hoping for a magical round here and there. These rounds are not possible if I hit 3 iron.

For instance, the most fun I have ever had on a golf course was one of my last tournaments as a senior in HS. I shot a 1 over 37 without any pars or bogeys. I made 6 birdies and 2 doubles in the first 8 holes and was 2 up on the #1 rated player in the state. Then I hit two tee shots OB on 9, put the third in a fairway bunker, and hit the flag on 1 hop with my 6th shot for a tap in triple to lose by one to the guy who made par. One of the doubles was also the result of a tee shot OB.

So yes, I shoot in the mid 90s most of the time, but I have made enough birdies in my life that a 5 footer isn't necessarily a surprise or going to cause my knees to knock. I just can't imagine going out there and knowing that every time I stand on the first tee the absolute best I can shoot is an 85 because my strategy is to keep it in play, hit 5 iron into every green, and then hope to get up and down a lot and never 3 putt. If I was playing against you or bo or whoever for a bunch of money then you bet that I would beat my index due to altering my strategy, but that limits the upside.

I guess it would be the Phil Mickelson mentality. When he plays at home I am sure he could say "I'm gonna play it safe and shoot 68 today," but instead he probably has a mentality closer to "Let's try to shoot 62 and if I shoot 72 then so be it." With me it would be 86-89 or try to shoot 81 and if i shoot 98 then whatever.
there are a couple of clubs btw driver and 3i, you know. it doesnt have to be driver or 3i off the tee. if your driver is that bad you should try 3w and tee it up a bit. 3w these days are like drivers of old anyway. dont be discourage if your 3w off the deck is very inconsistent. when you tee it up, it makes 3w much easier to hit.

Holy ****.

For a 27 handicap, the difference between a 3 iron and hybrid is almost nil. They are going to hit both terrible the vast majority of the time. The difference between a topped/chunked/etc shot is not very much. Its likely a difference of less than one shot a round if he switched them out today.

That said, as a 27 improves its likely that a hybrid will become more useful. As the terrible contact turns into marginal contact, the hybrid will start to really show its forgiveness and the shot pattern gap between it and a 3 iron will widen.

Should ARC have a hybrid in his bag instead of a 3 iron? Of course, especially as someone looking to improve. Is it this massive deal that out of sheer laziness he hasn't made that switch yet? Nope. In summary, everyone is wrong and you should feel bad for infecting this thread with superAIDS.

My kid turned two in april. I bought him a plastic set of clubs and some of those callaway foam balls. He just wacks them in the backyard and loves it. Only trouble we run into is when I get my SW out, all he wants to do is use my club.

Im excited for when he is a little older, maybe next year, and I can take him out to the course with me.

Had the match today. 2 birdies 2 pars, won the front, lost the back, pushed overall. Shot a 109. Ugh!

I have a son who just turned 1 a couple weeks ago. He's got some plastic golf clubs and balls but he really just bangs them on the ground like drums. One thing he's been doing for at least a month which is cool is he plays "catch" with me. I'll sit on the floor a few feet in front of him and roll or bounce a couple little balls toward him and he'll pick them both up and raise them in the air and fire them down at the ground hard enough so they bounce and reach me. It's pretty hilarious. I'm going to try to "teach" him golf and how to ice skate at a very young age. I'm planning on taking him to a practice green and creating games trying to get up and down and putting where him and I can have fun and he can learn the short game stuff before I take him to the range. He's got an unbelievable grip already.

This was a pretty good write-up and assessment of the whole situation.

So you are going to leave it at home and play with 13 clubs?

Or are you going to do the mathematically correct thing and replace it with another club?

You've spent post after post in this thread yelling at people for telling you what you shouldn't put in your bag, and now you're trying to tell others what they should put in their bag?

No - I'm saying I hope he carries 14 clubs and not 13. I don't care wtf he replaces it with but leaving it at home without replacing it would be dumb.

Also, when people start a post with "In honor of <your name>" they are trying to prod you into replying. So there.
