I don't see a benefit to pacing off putts anymore, I just rely on the touch that I've developed over the years. When I began getting serious about golf in my teenage years I used to do a bunch of stuff that didn't make sense now including pacing off my putts. Another thing that I did was to practice my stride between yardage markers. For instance, I'd try to make 50 even paces between the 150 and 100 stakes. I'd also keep stats for a lot of things to figure out what needed the most work and I'd practice whatever my weakness was.

These days none of these things I used to do make much sense for my current game. I don't take the game very serious these days, mostly do it as a leisure activity. Although, occasionally I still put my game-face on and really buckle down if I'm in a group of all good players. I really wish that there were more good players around that'd play scratch matches or tournaments. Sometimes I really miss the competition.

I have started to do a couple things to try and improve:

1. track fws hit, gir/+1, total putts to figure out where i am losing strokes
2. play with people better than me. most of the people i have played with are turrible at golf and I think it has hurt my development. I have found a guy to play with who is better than me and the pressure of not making an ass of myself helps me focus. Also, watching him course manage has been a help.

It's just to keep track of stats. The force is feel. Last year I tried the method of being purely mechanical with it based on distance as it relates to distance of backswing but yeah that didn't really work and it was a lot to think about. Now it's all feel.

What I've been doing that has helped a ton for distance control is after pacing off the putt length I will then walk the same distance perpendicular to the midpoint of my line. Then I'll face my line with ball on right, hole on left, and it really helps me see the distance. I take a few practice strokes while staring at the line and it's amazing how helpful this has been. I hit a stroke and it just feels right. I have already picked out my line so after I feel the right stroke I walk straight up to the ball, line it up with the pre-determined line, then just try to hit it within a handful of seconds.

The distance is to plug into kbfc's website after the round to see how many strokes I lost compared to a pro.

A little of both.

Also, if I'm playing myself I have to walk to the hole to take the flagstick out anyway. May as well count my steps on the way from the hole to the ball (or vice versa).

I think I'm way more relieved than I thought I would be that you guys aren't doing this for distance control reasons. Thank you.

Re: Pressing in nassau matches

I'm just curious how others on the forum deal with presses in their nassaus. I've played with two-down-automatic and press-when-you're-pissed. My preference is to play autos because when there not automatic there is an angle opponents can use.

On courses where I have to give stokes late in a nine, especially the last hole of the side opponents wait to press until that hole. I only play in friendly matches where the stakes are very low, so I don't ever protest these last hole presses. However, sometimes I wonder how others deal with the last hole press, that is, do you allow a press after a match is closed out? After all, presses are only allowed when a side is two down and if that is the case on the last hole of a side, that part of the nassau is over.

Part of giving the strokes is that sometimes they will come up on the last hole (often actually since finishing holes tend to be toughest), its part of the EV of getting the strokes to correctly press their advantage there, it is not an "angle". Super standard to allow the stuck guy a press on the last hole, even when I play 2 down auto presses with a guy if he is down one on the last hole he has the option to press that.

I don't have hybrids but everyone who hits them swears by them.
Played a round yesterday, demoed the Taylormade 4H to replace my 3i on the range, pro let me play a round with the demo, was so impressed I came back into the clubhouse after the round picked up the 3H and the 4H, left my 3i and 5w at the house today. I'm converted.

yea hybrids are cool, it's fun being 200 yards away from the green and actually having a chance to hit it

I'm just terrible with fairway woods. If I hit them good they are an amazing shot but for every amazing shot there are a handful of sub-optimal ones, and some toppers that are just horrific. I play short courses and I pretty much never hit FW woods for that reason. On long par 4s I may play for up-and-down if I have to, and on par 5s it seems like I can reach them all with D/iron/iron.

Do you hit hybrids out of the fairway like a FW wood, or like and iron? It would be awesome to ever actually have a shot at an eagle putt.

It's funny..in my last round I smashed a drive about 270 dead center on a par 5 and almost hit a FW wood (possibly reachable with perfect shot). I quickly convinced myself to not try it and stick with my 6i/lob wedge from here to green and I mashed my 6i perfect about 185 and left 35 yards or so pitch. I pitched to 8 inches and tapped in for birdie for my first ever par 5 birdie. Walking off the green I was thanking my lucky stars I did not attempt the damn 3w. lol.

hit hybrids like an iron imo, i'll take a divot a decent amount of the time on good strikes. i don't even carry a FW anymore its driver/19* hybrid/23* hybrid and then on to the irons

I choke up on my hybrids and hit them like an iron 100 percent of the time.

Speaking of hybrids, I'm thinking about getting the longest hybrid I can find and using it in place of my driver (at least until I can straighten it out). Any suggestions on what to demo tomorrow?

I still keep my 3W in the bag, but I'll only use it off the tee.
