My only eagle is on a par 4 still. One of these days I'll get a putt to drop on a 5.

So I'm sure this has been discussed before, but what do you do when someone very obviously hits into you?

Today I went out for a twilight 9 at my home course (just a college town muni, nothing special), and the course was pretty packed. In front of me was a Husband/Wife/preteen son group with a group of 4 or 5 in front of them and another 4-some in front of them... so nobody was going anywhere. That's ok, though- I can wait. As I'm walking off the tee box of #3 I see a 3-some behind me for the first time. It was slow going all the way, so they caught up to me pretty quick. #4 is a driveable par 4- ~300 give or take 10 yards depending on where the tees are, dead straight with traps guarding both sides of the front and a domed green. When I get up to the green to hit my shots (I had been playing 2 balls since I was still waiting on every tee shot playing those 2 balls per hole and I have an annual pass anyway so I don't feel like I'm cheating the course) the group in front of me is still on the tee box. As I finish putting out and am walking off the front of the green I hear a thump behind me (like, towards the middle of the green) and sure enough the group behind me drove the green with me standing on it. Now, to be clear- the green is entirely 100% visible from the tee, as well as the next tee box (so they could very clearly see that there was a group in front of me). I was kind of stunned because I didn't think there was anyone that would be ridiculous enough to hit into someone in a spot like that. After I thought about it for a second I picked up his ball, waved at him, then threw it into the woods. Then a second player from the group stepped up and teed off, again landing it <10 yards from me (not quite on the green this time, but over the front right bunker onto the fringe. I again waved and tossed the second one into the woods.

As I'm standing on the next tee waiting to tee off the first guy to hit into me drives up in his cart and "apologized", as in he's sorry that I played so slow. I pretty much told him that if it happened again I would throw it again, and that if he can't see that I'm not the one holding him up then he doesn't belong on a golf course. He wasn't pleased, obviously, but what can you do?

Anyway, my question is what would you do in that situation? I mean, there is no doubt 100% that he intentionally hit aiming essentially for the spot that I was standing and he could see me standing there. To me that's an open act of aggression and I have a lot of trouble just letting it go by without doing anything. I know some people step on the ball and smash it into the turf in that situation, but the ball was on the green and that's not really that much of a punishment anyway. I just wonder if there is a significant number of people that would honestly just let it go without doing anything other than telling them they shouldn't do that.

Don't play 2 balls maybe.

Obviously they weren't going anywhere even if you were playing only 1 ball but they probably saw you playing multiple balls and got mad. People who play multiple balls are the worst because they almost never speed up when they should. Not to mention you aren't even supposed to do it.

You probably were playing slow for a lone golfer. But they didn't realize you were actually 2 golfers playing for the price of one. In either case, if you play one ball and gtfo of the way then this probably doesn't happen.

Yet another case of a golfer breaking the actual rules then being mad when someone else on the course breaks an unwritten rule. lol

No, I wasn't, because I wasn't playing for the price of 1. I have an annual unlimited pass at the course that allows me to play whenever and however much I want to play. I mentioned this in the original post- like I said, you should try reading posts before you reply to them.

Why? I was more than keeping pace. As I said in the original post (please, please read before replying) I still had to wait on literally every tee box despite playing two balls, and at the time I was hit into the group in front of me was still on the next tee box.

Also- it was a round that started at 6pm at a muni- I really don't see how playing two balls and still pushing the group in front of you (with an unlimited play pass so I wasn't cheating the course out of another greens fee or something like that) during a Friday twilight round is such an egregious offense.

That said, that isn't even the point of the post. I think we can all agree that even if you think that playing 2 balls is wrong in the situation I have described, intentionally hitting into someone who you can see standing there is uncalled for. The point of the post was to ask what you guys do under the same situation.

Let them play through, and then hit every tee shot into them while they are waiting in the fairway.

No but seriously, I don't know what I would do. People are just so clueless on the golf course. Even marshalls are clueless sometimes. Last month, I had a marshall tell our group to pick up the pace, so we did but when we got to the next tee box there was two foursomes waiting to tee off.

If you are keeping up with the group in front of you, then that is all you can do. If people get mad that you are playing two balls, then they are ******ed. It's going to take them the same amount of time to play the 9 holes regardless of how many balls you are playing, given the fact that you are keeping pace with the group in front of you.

edit: but we already know they are ******ed because they hit into you. No one should ever hit into anyone under any circumstances.

Don't get me wrong - as played he's fine to chuck the ball into the woods. I'm just saying they probably saw you playing multiple balls and taking your sweet time and got mad.

I bet if you were playing 1 ball they don't drive into you.

And I don't think buying an "unlimited" pass means you can play 4 balls like some foursome. I play at a course that is walk all day with entry fee and jackasses take that to mean "I can walk 18 holes and get 3 rounds in!" when it's supposed to mean "You can get 3 rounds in by walking 54 holes."

I've had to wait on dip****s like these and it's absurd. They think the golf course is their backyard or something. Now that I got my driver straightened out and decent distance I will consider driving into them next time it happens.

The other day I hit my drive into the right side of the fairway. Somebody from the group on the hole to my right hit his drive to his right. They are in a cart looking for the ball maybe 25-35 yards ahead. Well I'm over my ball getting ready to hit when I hear a casual heads up, I look up to see the ball whizzing by my head. I was like "Heads up? The word is fore. Do you have idea what the **** heads up means? Heads up as in pick my head up so I can the ball that is about to end my life? Heads up is what you say when you are about to hit!"

I was livid. It probably came 6-8 inches from my face.

I understand what you're saying, but I think there's a pretty vast difference between playing 2 balls and playing 3 or 4 different balls. Playing 2 balls at a time I can keep pace with just about any group other than a pair riding in a cart or less, and in those situations I wouldn't play 2 balls. I would also never consider playing 2 balls if the course wasn't backed up horribly like it was tonight.

Anyway, like I said, I understand what you're saying, but I just don't think that in that specific situation playing two balls is that big of a deal. As Mantis said, if I am keeping pace with the group in front of me there really is no reason to get upset about it.

he said he was playing 2 balls, not 4. and how many times in all of the rounds you have played have you been slowed up by a single playing 2 balls. Ever?

Multiple times. Did you read my post?

Any number of balls greater than 1 is poor etiquette.

2 balls is slightly better than 3 or 4 but if a group pulls up and sees you playing multiple balls and they are trying to get a twilight round in - they are going to get upset. Whether they should or not they just will. Because you are not playing by the rules and they are waiting on you. Waiting on a legit 4some is one thing. Waiting on some douche who thinks he's practicing for the city am is another.

Pro tip: I've been trying to be the last person to go out at twilight. It's $15 at 6:30 I'll play 5 holes then go to a bunker and just practice my bunker shots until I literally cannot see anymore.

spgranger, it is never acceptable to hit into someone (especially when you're walking off of the green) so what you did with their shots is OK as far as I'm concerned. But...you really shouldn't play multiple balls on a crowded course under any circumstances. Even if there is a log jam in front of you, people behind you get antsy to hit and problems like this occur.

BTW they really shouldn't send you off as a single when the course is crowded and you're not going to be able to play thru groups...poor course management. they should wait and put you in a group, or have a martial out there watching things and match you up w/a group at the appropriate time.

I simply disagree with this statement. I did not cheat the course and I did not slow anyone down. No one suffered any negative effects of me playing 2 balls instead of one.

Playing 2 balls with multiple groups in front of you as a single at 6pm is absolutely acceptable. At 6pm on a weekday is the time hackers, guys with kids/wives that don’t play go out.

That being said, I would have to be there to say if they were hitting into you intentionally. Hitting a 300 yarder straight is quite a feat, so maybe they got lucky and didn’t think they’d make it. If there is a short par 4 ( 280-310) I will hit as teh guys walk off.

In either case, I think throwing their ball is wayyyyyyyyyy out of line. A simple, “hey you guys were pretty close to me” is good enough if they didn’t yell “Fore” as they walk up. If they don’t apologize or acknowledge their mistake a “Go **** yourself is in order”

Thank you- honestly the reason that I posted this is because I think that I might have let my emotions get the best of myself and done something out of line. I do think that their action was probably a little more egregious than what you are saying (these guys were clearly not total hackers- they hit 2 straight shots ~300 and straight, both landing within 10 yards of me on the fly), but I probably could have been the bigger man. Also, if it wasn't clear, I walk and carry my bag, so I had set my bag on the front side of the green and the first guy hit it over me. It wasn't like he hit his shot as I was walking off the back of the green. I was literally still standing on the green with my bag on the front side of the green when the ball landed, much less when he actually hit it.

That said... yea, i'm pretty amazed that there are actually people who think that it's somehow wrong to play two balls during a weekday twilight round at a ****ty muni course that is backed up 5 groups deep. I can either play an extra ball and come a little closer to matching pace with the group in front of me, or I can play one ball and stand there breathing down the necks of the Mother/Father/10 year old son group of hackers in front of me (obviously making them nervous and feeling like I am impatient with them). I wasn't just playing 2 balls because I wanted to get more golf in- there are practical reasons to coming closer to matching the group ahead of yours' pace rather than playing 2 or 3x as fast as them.
