I think it can be done. It would take the sort of discipline that the Bay Area Beast does not have, but I am sure that I could do it, as could a number of others.

The babs thread stopped being fun about a year and a half ago. His circumstances are a little too sad to be funny. Another M parallel, except her story is going to end more sadly, because there are innocent persons involved and she doesn't have the extreme safety nets he does.

I feel the exact opposite.

Babs has a teenie little bit of self-awareness tucked in the very back corner of his brain behind a bunch of mental images of guys sucking each others' ****s that comes out every once in a while when he loses everything to the Indians and has to extra slow pay people he owes.

I think he has much more self-awareness than that but an almost-total lack of any ability to give it currency.

I guess I don't know what these things are that he's allegedly self-aware about.

He doesn't seem self-aware about the fact that he's egregiously stupid.

He really seems to genuinely convince himself that he earns his way rather than being a leech who is being sustained through the handouts of others.

Like many addicted losing gamblers, he seemingly genuinely believes himself to be woefully unlucky.

I could see seeing him as having more self-awareness than M, which was jmakin's original premise, but seeing him as somewhat self-aware in general seems like a stretch at best.

That's because his currency is already spoken for.

He seems to have some self-awareness that he can occasionally lose his cool, though it's only when provoked. Do you think he has much self-awareness about:

His sports betting prowess.
How good he is at math and numbers.
Why he got fired.
Whether or not he owns his own condo.
How much his parents support him.
That the Thai woman was kathoey.

I think MLY wins the battle of self-awareness, but it's like the Bears winning against the Browns

Remember his first post in the big thread? As I recall it, it started off with “let’s face it, if I were a winning bettor” or something similar. He knows perfectly well that he’s never studied calculus or any other serious math, but doesn’t know as a matter of intellect what he doesn’t know and thus overweights simple arithmetic skills. I think he knows four and five, just because he has relentlessly and consistently avoided any truthful discussions of those in thousands and thousands of internet posts. I think you’re absolutely right about the Thai woman, though.

I can’t really opine on the firing. I talked to him about it not long after and agreed to keep the conversation confidential.

I do find his bluster to be entertaining and I do like the man. I’ve taken heat around here for that and imagine that’ll continue.

MLY clearly beats Babs by pretty much any standard of comparison. And that’s before you get into the whole racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic thing that you somehow are cool with.

What the ****? Like, you can't form an opinion of whether his firing was justified? Or are you humoring the ridiculous notion of him having been trainwrecked?

There are questions in this world that reasonable minds may differ about. His firing is not among them.

I understand continuing to slow-roll the walk-back. You've had to slowly abandon the goofy notions that he's secretly smart or that he's secretly a good dude when they became 100% indefensible. You've given up significant ground to your current functional view of "well yeah, he's a piece of ****, but I like him anyway." I think you can still eventually make it all the way to the correct side of the ledger.

I hear you. I pretty much lack any ability to feel offended. I don’t have any racism, anti-semitism or homophobia in my personality, but for whatever reason, none of those outrage me. I disagree with them on political and moral grounds, but for whatever reason, they don’t get me worked up emotionally.

Prior to the firing, I explained in detail that documentation was being put in place so there was a paper trail of his behavior in preparation for an impending termination, all of which happened exactly as I described. There’s nothing to opine on.

Not that at all. I think his firing was entirely justified. What I won’t opine on is what I know of HIS views about it.

Have you read Hitch-22, LKJ? I say that because in it, Hitchens makes the point that it is very difficult, likely impossible, to have views that are unified. You’ve repeatedly accused me of hypocrisy or inconsistency w/r/t my views of a Beast, and I don’t deny there is some force to those points. But I’m not overly perturbed by it.
