I've done all my updates with that little space. I have problems DLing larger app updates like White Noise on the go, but no problem on the computer.

Dumb question part deux: Will using apt backup and restoring jailbreak settings work in 3.0 like it did for the other updates? Or will I have to basically start from scratch?
If you are jailbroken, or if you ever want to jailbreak.

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE

until the DevTeam gives the OK, because they can add things that make the phones very difficult to jailbreak/unlock.

Once the jailbreak is ready though, the answer to your apt backup question is "It Depends". if Apt Backup works with 3.0 than yes. But I don't know if it will work.

Also, in general updating your firmware on a jailbroken fun will just unjailbreak it, waste a bunch of space because you have a bunch of **** on it that you can't even use.

does it delete all your jailbroken stuff or does it just make it so you can't access it? should I delete all of it before updating or when we are able to rejailbreak it will be available again (if the update doesn't delete it)?

edit: I was just going to update and start fresh by reinstalling all the jailbroken stuff I had, but don't want to have wasted space taken up on the harddrive.

I am thinking of leaving Sprint and coming to ATT. I may as well wait another week or so and get the 3GS. One thing I am concerned about - if the 3GS ships with 3.0 (I believe it does, right?), will I still be able to tether? That is my biggest concern and possibly a deal breaker.

Not until 3.0 is jailbroken would be my assumption. I'm getting one Friday and just not going to put a ton of stuff on it until its jailbroken (mostly for tethering, I don't mind paying for apps).

I honestly don't know. I always format and start fresh with each new firmware. Then use AppBackup to restore my settings. Though this time I have a whole new iPhone coming, so I am hoping the iTunes backup transfers ok.

I would hate to lose my place on Sally's Spa.

That is a bummer. Is 3.0 for sure jail-breakable?

Getting the iPhone would be a bit of a pain for me TBH - last few years I have had a dirt cheap plan that gives everything I need, no contract at all, and I can change phones easily. So I would be paying money for a new (but very nice) phone, having a contract, and worrying about jailbreaking and high-replacement costs and etc etc, ugh.

they have already made firmware to jailbreak 3.0 guys
06-17-2009 , 02:20 AM
There is also an update that you can apply to 3.0 on out of the box phones that will enable tethering.... would post a link, but not sure if that is allowed or not.
06-17-2009 , 02:46 AM
Great info, df. Will PM you if I get the phone.

Without jailbreaking?

Not sure how often you come down to LA, but I left Sprint for AT&T to get my iPhone and AT&T's service is WAY worse than Sprint's down here. I love the little computer in my pocket, but as a phone it's only so-so at best.

On the 3.0 subject I'm not touching anything until I'm 100% sure everything I use is going to work. I can't live without tethering or my video camera.

Yes, without jailbreaking or unlocking.

You can get one and use it on T-Mobile like I do. Unlocking/jailbreaking is much simpler than it used to be and now takes less than 10 steps, and if you go with a Flexpay/prepaid plan you wouldn't be tied down to a contract.

I'm on the T-Mobile prepaid Sidekick plan and pretty happy with it. It costs $1/day for unlimited texts and data, and calls are $0.15 per minute.

liftoff?
06-17-2009 , 12:27 PM
Paul,

Thats not a bad plan at all. I believe if you go the T-Mobile route you do not get 3G service right? So I may as well buy a 1st gen iPhone if I am going to do that...

LFS,

That is a bummer. I head to LA about 3-4 times a month, usually on work-related stuff (but still texting and checking google maps and etc on my phone). I am actually very happy with my Sprint service, but I just moved and so far I have not been able to maintain a good signal at my house (or even a fair signal - it's pretty bad). So a friend with an iPhone is coming over and we are going to check his signal strength.

Who was I kidding, thinking I could wait. I ran AptBackup, backed up my iPhone, and am now restoring with software update. iTunes claims it's going to take an hour to downloand, which isn't so bad considering millions of people are probably downloading the same 230 MB file at the same time. My understanding is that once this is done I re-jailbreak, install AptBackup, and restore. I will report back on my progress.
