Hmm I just got my 3GS in November of last year and it's a 3 year contract (Rogers Canada). There's probably no way I can upgrade to the 4 without paying out serious money. They told me that you can upgrade with no fees after 2 years in. Just phoned though and they said there might be an early upgrade available. Standard is 18 months or I have to pay full price for the phone.

Well as indicated, evidently you will be notified as you get close to the limit, or you can at least check yourself fairly easily.

I just checked my stats and after three months I've only used 1.5GB in total, so nowhere near 2GB/month. I'd consider downgrading but I'm concerned about two things: 1) since I'm grandfathered in can I switch back in the future, or once am I off the unlimited plan can I not go back?, and 2) for what insidious reason is AT&T doing this? They're not just offering a cheaper plan (for most) to present and future customers out of the goodness of their hearts. Do they plan to raise the cost of data in the future? Is competition (including possibly upcoming smartphone contracts expiring) dictating the change in price?

There's something going on here and I'm not sure what it is, and it may have been mentioned but I didn't see it if so.

The problem with Canada is that the upgrade price isn't the "new customer" price. Your upgrade is going to be around $500 compared to the advertised price of probably $299. I'm pretty sure the phone itself is going to be around $800 to buy outright. I am eligible for an upgrade, but I might just buy it outright so I don't have to renew my contract for another 3 years. It currently expires in September of next year, so I'm thinking it would be nice to have options regarding carrier without getting locked into a contract.

you'll get notified if you come close and if you need more data, another 1GB is 10 bucks more. so the 2gb plan is 25 bucks and the unlimited is 30. if you need another 1GB, it's an extra 10, so 35 bucks those month.

essentially if you need the extra 1gb every other month, you break even. if you need the extra 1gb more often, stay on the unlimited. if you use it once every 3 months or less, i'd switch. even if you go over occasionally, you're still saving money.

the only concern is if your usage is going to skyrocket. mine will definitely go up once the netflix app comes out. i still don't think i'll go over 2GB as i'm using less than 500mb each month, but it's definitely a concern.

once you switch, you can't go back.

i think they're doing it because the 2% of people using more than 2gb each month can use A LOT more. there are people going through 10gb each month because they tether a lot and stream tons of videos/music, pretty much 24/7.

i'm sure they also expect usage to keep going up and they can charge more then. also, by (hopefully) reducing traffic on their network, the experience will be better for everyone, attracting new customers.

i could be wrong, but that's my speculation.

Ya, I'll probably end up buying it outright as well.
