Old plumbing sucks.

Water heater breaks - like flooding. Valve doesn't work. Buy valves. One is wrong. Get right one. Sweat (solder) valves. Takes many tries cause I'm not good at it. Get one right. I think I have the other one finally. Main water supply valve breaks 'cause I'm turning it on and off so much. I guess stuck off is better than stuck on with a huge leak.

It's a possibility. I was just trying tonight to get the water from pouring out.

I really want to make my own solar hot water heater, but unfortunately this is kind of an emergency and I pretty much have to have something done tomorrow.

Micro, you can shut off the water at the meter, then make the needed repairs to house plumbing. Replacing a water heater is easy btw.

The secret to soldering copper pipe is to use flux and never ever touch (with your fingers) the areas that you have cleaned with sandpaper prior to using flux and soldering.

Oh, and remember to remove the screens, shower heads, etc. on each and every faucet/outlet in your house prior to turning the water back on.

Good luck man.

We have to rely on bbc to get all our news (since chinese news is censored and in chinese). After the earthquake we were reading all about the tsunami and expected consequences. I happened to look at cnn (gf reads it I dont usually) and the contrast was amazing:

BBC - Australia announces tsunami impact unlikely to be severe etc etc
CNN - TSUNAMI IS GOING TO KILL US ALL WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE

Also while on the subject its amazing how many family n friends have asked if im ok. Obviously the earthquake happened in asia and china is in asia!

But I suck at math, so I'll defer to him, but 8K sounds a bit much imo...

For perspective though, I think I remember reading that the Yucutan Penninsula asteroid producing a 12.5ish quake.

In any case, the Japan quake was pretty damn massive, and it's very lucky (for lack of a better word) that they were semi-prepared for such a quake. The death toll could be much, much worse.

Not sure if this is referring to my post, but I went and found the podcast of the show to make sure I had heard properly. From Wiki:

The energy release of an earthquake, which closely correlates to its destructive power, scales with the 3⁄2 power of the shaking amplitude. Thus, a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ( = 10^(1.0)(3 / 2)) in the energy released; a difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ( = 10^(2.0)(3 / 2) ) in the energy released.[2]

Christchurch was 6.3, Japan 8.9. 8.9-6.3 = 2.6 --> 10^(2.6)(3/2) = 7943.28.

There was more than a few times where I went European Vacation/Chevy Chase and just kept driving around a roundabout, trying to figure out which way to go to get on the highway I wanted. Hard to process everything on the first take when there's 2-3 lanes in the roundabout at the busier highway intersections.
Automatic rental cars are more expensive everywhere in Europe, since they are not the standard and more expensive to buy compared to stickshift. US is other way around.

This picture should answer your question.

So, 8.0 is 30 times more powerful than 7.0, which 30 times more powerful than 6.0, but 8.0 is 8000 times more powerful than 6.0?

Bleh, I make no claims whatsoever to any expertise in this field, I was just relaying what I heard on a science-related radio program. You can listen to the podcast yourself if you like via their website @http://rrrfm.libsyn.com/index.php?po...%20A%20Go%20Go it's about 1/3 of the way into the March 13 show.

Pushy26 - Yeah, I suck at math, so that could very well be right. Just seems "off" to me, but I'm no scientist. I just thought the next number was always 10 times more than the previous, but again I could be way off.

Smiteme - Plz explain what I'd be re-leveling, cuz I can't figure it out.

Can't think of anywhere better to post this so may aswell go here. I just had an eye test and had glasses made up for me. Optician said my deterioration is very very mild, I xplained I want them cuz I get a lot of headaches at the pc hours every day, plus they water a lot. So I just got them and in general there's obv an improvemnt. Basically just like wearing mini magnifying glasses (I guess that's what they are duh) but soon as I got on my laptop....urgh! All the windows are no longer square, they elongate towards one side so now they look like: Exagerrated version.

Is there something wrong?

Thanks. Already shut off at the meter.

I know the theory of sweating, just working on the art of it. I can do a good job on what I can see, but copper pipes are always up against something and it's hard to do the bit that you can't see.

I put the water heater where it is in the first place, moving it from inside the house to outside to get more room in the kitchen.

I'd never heard of removing the screens. What's going to clog them? Bits of solder?
