Thanks Cha...I might do that.

I also promised you a brief TR about p90x a while back cha. My thoughts:

-It is far to difficult to complete sticking rigidly to the program
-For my goals (building lean muscle and staying thin) it wasn't great. I fare better from a good lift/cardio schedule.
-Several of the workouts are fantastic outside of the program and I still do chest and back, ab ripper, and yoga for change of pace workouts
-I would not recommend p90x to anyone

Gaz,

I've seen tons of people shake hands like that. Most notably when men and women shake hands vs same gender, but I've seen it from plenty of people. Perhaps I'm just an inherent skeptic, but that handshake does not look out of the ordinary to me at all, even if there is a more traditional 'standard' that most are accustomed to.

Cha, KB et al re: P90X. Thanks again, and yeah, I used to be in damn good shape when I was a Kung Fu instructor back in the day, and I know that damn near any form of moderate exercise you do 6 days a week will work.

But it has to be something people will stick with. Just didn't want to go wasting $$ if it wasn't worth it, and it sounds like it's not. It's not like I don't KNOW how to get back into shape; it's just that I need to get off my ass and do it.

Had one awesome landlord. We were living on a pretty nice private lane downtown and apparently he had some complaints, realized we weren't throwing crazy coke parties and asked us to try not to piss off the neighboors to much.

He lived in Luxembourg for most of the year and travelled to Asia a bunch so just seemed like a huge boss. When we moved out I got a quasi angry email about us owing money for a few repairs and such which I told him we would obviously cover.

Every other landlord I have had was total scum.

+2. then u call them out on it. and months later they give you same limp handshake. then you're not sure if they're leveling you or what. so annoying.

last time i experienced a limp shake I looked at the guy w total disgust for at least a few seconds before realizing i was looking at him w total disgust

Handshake firmness seems like an outdated thing to care about. I try to give good shake jobs just b/c I know it leaves an impression whether it has any bearing on me as a person or not.

tbh though, I am less tilted by the limp shake than those guys who who try to assert dominance at every opportunity - you know the Neanderthals that offer their hand palm facing semi-downward and then try to pulp your fingers with their grip. On first meeting they'll repeat your name back to you 3 or 4 times thinking this is endearing and not creepy. I try to get out of their bubble of assumed charisma asap. I'm going to tentatively name them Carnegie-droids from now on.

I'm late to this, but the palm-down (slightly raised) outstretched hand is a clear sign that the dude is a douche. Most likely a frat boy, probably rich from no effort of his own and just looking to establish immediate dominance.

Then again, perhaps that's the exact reason the world's "leaders" tend to take a neutral (wimpy stance) when it comes to shaking hands.

Social experiment:

$25 on Stars to the first person who, next time some dude offers his hand palm-down, they take his fingers and gently kiss him on the knuckles as if they were formally greeting some old-school lady, and then post back here with TR.

Srsly. 100% of the time. The only variable is degree is doucheness.

That just made me lol. As a joke (with people I know) I like going in for the handshake, then offering my fingers like I'm the Queen of England.

Thanks for the TR - that's pretty consistent with everything I know about it.

$25 is nowhere near enough to even consider doing that imo.

lol you just described someone i know to the letter.

fwiw, john wooden was a frat boy.
03-20-2011 , 11:37 PM
The last guy who did the limp handshake to me I laughed at and made him redo.
03-20-2011 , 11:48 PM
FWIW - I met and shook hands with John Wooden a few years ago.

Me: "Coach, it's a great honor to meet you!"
Wooden: "Thank you for calling me coach, but please call me John."

No frat-boy handshake, just a simple, normal and firm shake with the added bonus of him grasping my right hand with his left as we shook hands.
03-20-2011 , 11:51 PM
shaking his hand isn't a FWIW, it's a brag

There's now a whole bunch of true 1's in that picture now Slacka?

I also don't like the fish-limp handshake, but the oppo also tilts me a bit. The people that try super-hard to crush your hand when you shake it. That doesn't make you an alpha-tough guy, unless you have some serious Navy SEAL stories to go with it or something along those lines. Comes off a bit too insecure/try-hard, and can leave you with a sore hand.

If we're having a contest to see who can crush who's hand, please lemme know ahead of time so I can make an effort as well, m'kay?

I think microbet would win an STTF hand crushing contest.
