24 stableford, left birdie putts short on two consecutive holes, but made par on both. My swing is slowly coming together, though my iron play is still nowhere near consistent, did hit a sweeeeeet 5 iron second shot on 12 to set up the first birdie opportunity after a good drive. On 13 I hit driver pin high on the fairway left of the green on a 240 m downhill par 4, chipped too far past the hole with a 7 iron from about 20 yards, left the birdie putt a foot and a half short for an easy par.

If I make it to the range tomorrow and saturday and play a round friday I should be spot on for the tournament on sunday.

Starting golfing only last year so my best score ever was a 56 on 9. Today I shot a 51 and made my first par of the year (only had 1 all last year). Last year I shot 65-66 last year pretty consistently. This year my high round is 61. For the first time I feel like I actaully have started making some progress.

28 stableford, yeah me! Front nine 62 (including a 13 and a 11), back nine 50.

Highlight of the round was par on the par 5 497m 6th which was followed by the 13 on the 7th and the 11 on the 8th.

Had 2 birdie putts but missed both (made par) and another 3 par putts that missed.

It is getting much much better.

89 at wildflower golf course in detroit lakes mn.. rating 72.6 blue to 74.6 black (they didnt have all the tees up, a mix of mainly blue) so approx 6700 yards..

In 2007 it was listed as one of minnesotas top 10 courses. they run a special of 23 dollars with a cart for 18 holes until may 2nd so good value..

shot 49-40 with lots of poor chips and 3 putts on front nine until i could figure out speed of concrete greens as minnesota grass is still getting green.. also 85 and sunny with little wind which is rare here but great for the links style course

I drove the ball really well and avoided the snowbanks

overall really happy with my play for not hitting a ball this year before the first tee.. The weather is 55 degrees cooler today with snow tonight, and the fargo courses are still quite wet so I might not get out again for a while.

That quacking sound you heard in Michigan today was me. Played a nice course in Otsego, MI, http://www.lynxgolfcourse.com/ Lynx Golf Course. My high soft fade/cut game is not made for a steady 15-20 MPH wind. Shot 43-46=89. If there was a wrong side of the green, or a spot above the hole not to hit to, that's where you'd find me. Particularly on the back 9 when I started double-crossing myself. Longest putt made was 12 feet... for double, of which I had 5 (2 were 1-putt doubles). Guess I have a bit more rust then I thought.

Course though was a nice layout, with some elevation changes. Though a few are somewhat dramatic. Greens were receptive to the few good shots I hit, and they rolled true, all 18 tilted back to front. Can't complain about $25 to ride. Can complain about the 5 hour round, in a 3-some.

Going to a club demo in KZoo tomorrow... iron shopping.

Not warmed up. Hit Driver on a 340 yard hole, not really a "smart" play but I am much more confident with my driver right now than my fairway woods/hybrid. I duck hook it into a bunker on another hole. I have 150 left (ugh) into the wind and try and hit a 7 iron over some trees. Hit it 8 inches fat and the ball literally goes almost straight right and about 20 yards into another bunker. Repeat process with 9 iron. Hit wedge from 60 yards too hard to 40 feet. Nice lag to a foot, tap in double. GOOD START.

#2:
Duck hook drive again, catches tree and is knocked into the fairway short. Have a 7 iron from 155. Hit it right at it, but drawing just a little and really low and thin. It catches a bunker. Easy sand shot, but I hit it too hard to about 12 feet. Push the putt, good speed, tap in bogey.

#3:
Hit a big high hook into the trees. Smart punch out to "102" with a hybrid. I hit my 100 yard gap wedge from 102 directly at the pin and well over the green. I putt from light rough way too hard, and miss the 10 footer coming back on the right side. Double.

#4:
6 iron on a par 3. Couldn't play any easier. I hook it so badly it comes up short, hits a tree, and is in a hazard. It is completely dry, but their are weird tree stump things tht make my shot unplayable. It is a yellow hazard, so I take 2 club lengths and drop (is this right?) I hit a very nice pitch shot to 10 feet and barely miss the putt. Double.

#5:
Into the wind with my 10 degree Driver. I hit it perfect, but the hole is 460 and the wind ate that crap up. So I had 225 in. I hit a 3 wood right at the pin but it carried a bit too far to 40 feet. I hit an awful putt that breaks way too much and is too hard. I leave the par putt on the edge of the hole. 3 putt bogey.

#6:
7 iron par 3. Couldn't play any easier again. I hit an okay shot that started at the pin, but hooked too much to 30 feet. I hit a bad putt and have a 6 foot downhill breaker for par, which I make in the center of the hole. PAR.

#7:
Pull drive about 10 yards, but it is in the fairway 135 left. I hit a 9 iron perfect and right at the pin but it goes over the green. I have a dirt lie and am on an extreme downhill. I putt it like it is a 6 foot putt from the "rough" 40 feet over the green. It is okay, but tenative and goes to 6 feet. Burn the edge again. Bad putt. Bogey.

#8:
Duck hook hybrid as usual. Take a drop from the cartpath. I still have a little tree root right in front of my ball and I have to hit it over a tree from 92 yards. I hit a gap wedge that clips the very top of the tree, but the ball still travels nicely and lands 12 feet from the hole. I drain putt center cut for a birdie. Still didn't hit the putt solid really, just all out of sorts with my putting.

#9:
Smashed drive into light rough on the right. Have 300 into a par 5. I try to layup with a 5 wood to 100 but just completely skulled it or something. Weirdest shot ever. The ball went like a line drive knuckle ball about head height with a 5 wood to 65 yards. (So I hit it 235...no way...) I semi blade the next shot and it runs through the really hard green. I duff the chip 5 feet. Then I chip the next one nicely to 6 feet. Burn the edge on the putt. Goddamn double. +10/ 45 on the front.

#10
Par 3, playing as easy as possible. My friend aced this with a 5 iron the other day. I am hitting 9 iron. I hook it like 30 yards. I have a pretty tough pitch and hit it just a bit thin, and it goes over the green and into the water. I drop, hit the same shot to 2 feet and tap in for double.

#11
Hit a nice drive, but it draws a little too much and i have to stand in a bunker and swing at my ball like a baseball bat, from 120 yards. I try this with a 9 iron and hit something awful b/c it rattled around the trees well left of me and came down. Chipped a 9 iron under the trees to 25 feet, crappy putt to a foot, bogey.

#12
Hit a very solid 5 wood to first cut on the left. Tried to hit a 3/4s pwedge and half bladed it. It had a little spin on it and it bounced just right and was 12 feet from the hole. Left putt in center of the hole. Tap in par.

#13
Hit a very solid drive that appeared to be drawing into the fairway. Found ball in trees. Knocked 4 iron right at the pin under all of the trees but it went motoring to the back of the green. Crappy putt from fringe to 15 feet short. Drain that for a par. Actually felt like a good putt.

#14
Hit what I thought was a nice drive. Hit a forced fade over the trees on the right to go for this par 5 in two. Found ball in trees. Hit recovery shot with hybrid almost too high...missed branches by inches. Also creeped up towards the OB that intrudes on the fairway. Great execution on my shot though. I have 115 in and try another 3/4 pwedge with the same result, to 40 feet. Hit a terrible putt to 10 feet, even though it was a very tough mini golf putt. Barely miss that one on the edge, putt felt bad again. 3 putt bogey.

#15:
Playing as easy as possible. Hit a pwedge towards center of the green. Drew a bit to get tight and spun towards the hole. I thought it was going in, but it was 8 feet short. Confident putt here finally hit well. Burned edge. Tap in par.

#16:
Smoked drive. Found it in rough 5 feet from water. Had 150 in. Had a weird lie and ball didn't go at all and ended up about 30 yards short in a bunker. Hit bunker shot to a foot and tapped in for par.

#17:
Smoked drive to 88 yards. Hit 58 degree a tad thin and hooked it a bit and it hit the green and bounded 30 yards over. Hit a nice pitch that landed a foot short of perfect and rolled back off the crowned green. Chipped that one to 6 feet and burned the edge on the putt. Double from 88 yards in the center of the fairway.

#18:
Smoked 5 wood to 120. Hit a really nice looking pwedge that held the stupidly shallow green and stayed on the fringe. Hit 35 foot putt awful and short to 6 feet. Left that one hanging on edge. Tap in bogey. +7 42 on the back.

Overall a nice little 87. I feel like I'm getting really pissed off. It seems as if all of my progression to a 2.1 handicap last summer has been completely shatted off the face of the planet.

What's your grip like? just wondering. Seems like you hooking it too much and when you aren't hooking you are airmailing greens.

The key to Ben Hogan being as great as he was, was taking the left side of the course out of play. Great words to live by. I used to hit draws or hook everything and I changed my grip....granted its uncomfortable for a looooooooooong time but once you get used to it, many strokes will come off your scores. Book it.

Odd day on the course. I shot 77 on a par 71.

Hit 8 of 9 greens on the front and shot +1 with 18 putts.

Hit 5 of 9 greens on the back and bleh.

I lipped out/hit the hole four times with the putter, once on a pitch shot from 35 yards and once with a sand shot for eagle. I missed the birdie putt btw.

Hitting the ball great though which makes me happy.

4-iron into the fairway. 162 yards left into the wind. Knocked down a 6-iron onto the fringe. Two putts. Par. Next hole.

i was eventually called in to leave course due to lightning....oh well golf is fun playing in english conditions.

74.

New personal best. Not the longest course (6200) but fairly tight - tree lined on both sides on every hole. 7/13 fairways, 8/18 GIR, 27 putts. I can't remember the last time I didn't have a single 3 putt!

Just for kicks (and maybe to help me figure out why I scored so well when I didn't feel like I was playing especially well), a recap:

#1: Par 4, 365 yards. Dead into a howling 20+ mph wind. Solid driver to 145, right side of fairway. Try and cut a 4 iron around some protruding branches, pull it. Get a nice (lucky) ricochet off a tree branch to front fringe, lag putt to 2', make it. Par.

#2: Par 3, 115 yards. Again into the wind. I'd usually hit a 9 iron, hit a 6 iron about six feet past the hole. Putt too hard, make a 2' comebacker. Par.

#3: Par 5, 540 yards, dogleg right. Into the wind. Solid driver doesn't fade, hits the left side of the fairway, bounds through the rough which hasn't grown yet into the trees. Punch out sideways with 3 hybrid. 3 hybrid to about 100 yards, hits in the middle of the fairway, rolls down a slope into the left rough where tree branches affect the next shot. Punch and run 3 hybrid to about 25' past the hole, make the putt. Just dumb luck. Par.

#4: Par 4, 340 yards. Downwind. 3 hybrid to left side of the fairway 120 out. Blind uphill shot - hit a 3/4 8 iron, bounces in front of the green and rolls past the pin all the way over the back. Wat. Inexcusably bad chip shot past the hole to 10'. Left uphill putt short, tapped in. Bogey.

#5: Par 3, 170 yards. Right to left wind. Drew a 3/4 5 iron to 20 feet, lag to tap in distance short. Par. That 20 feet was 2nd closest of our group of 28 players, the wind was fierce.

#6: Par 4, 400 yards. Back into the stiff wind. Hit driver just a hair too good - instead of catching a right to left slope that would have put me in the middle of the fairway as planned, I hit it past the slope down into a gully 155 out. Punch out mostly sideways with hybrid to 125 yards. Pull 7 iron, pin high left about 15'. Make putt. WTF. Par.

#7: Par 4, 365 yards. Downwind, dogleg left. Solid draw with the driver to 100 yards. 42* Niblick too hard, just over the back. 30' chip to 6 inches, tap in. Par.

#8: Par 3, 135 yards. Downwind. Beautiful 9 iron that covers the flag. I don't get any kind of spin (old grooves, slow shallow swing, Bridgestone E6+ ball), end up 15' past the pin. Leave putt about 1' short, tap in. Par.

#9: Par 5, 465 yards. Downwind. Not a great driver, into the first cut on the right and about 230 out. Major water hazard on the left starting 140 out, protrudes into the fairway - to go for the green or even lay up anywhere close I'd have to hit a huge fade, something I can't do with a 3 wood or consistently with a hybrid. Punch a half wedge to 155, hit 6 iron to 12 feet, make putt. Birdie.

#10: Par 4, 350 yards. Back into the wind. Solid driver to 130. Tricked by the wind - the players hitting before me have their shots go left. I hit a 6 iron at the pin and the wind holds it up and takes it right. Chip in from about 20'. WTF. Birdie.

#11: Par 5, 475 yards. Into the wind. Pull driver into left rough. Hole has a 90 degree dogleg right, just need to get to the corner. Punch a 3 hybrid to 125. 8 iron is a hair too much club, hit it about 20' past the hole. Lag downhiller up to about 1.5', make it. Par.

#12: Par 4, 365 yards. Modest dogleg right but no room on the left. Into the wind. Perfect driver to 150. Pull 4 iron, pin high about five yards left of the green. Skull chip (ugh) to 15', leave putt just short, tap in. Bogey.

#13: Par 3, 135 yards. Downhill, left to right wind. Hit smooth 7 iron at left side of the green, wind carries it all the way across to the right rough. Mediocre chip to about 12', leave putt just short, tap in. Bogey.

#14: Par 5, 465 yards. Straight away, more or less downwind. Solid driver to 215, too much hook on 3 wood to about 15 yards short of the green in the rough on the left. Lousy pitch trickles off onto the fringe about 18' from the hole, almost hole it with putter, tap in. Par.

#15: Par 5, 540 yards. Downwind, playing short. Solid drive. 3 hybrid hits in the middle of the fairway, catches slope and ends up in the trees left about 100 out. Punch a hooked hybrid out onto the green. Somehow lag super evil 25' double breaker to about 1', make it. Par.

#16: Par 3, 165 yards. Right to left wind. Easy 5 iron to middle of the green. It starts pouring rain as we approach the green. Make 12' putt. LOL. Birdie.

#17: Par 4, 395 yards. Right to left wind, rain slacks off. Perfect penetrating driver, hits fairway and kicks right - right into a divot. Second shot is 130 over a water hazard. Pull 8 iron slightly chopping it out of the hole, end up just short of the green in the rough. Chip is too hard, 10' past. Leave downhill putt 2' short dead in the heart, make it. Bogey.

#18: Par 4, 410 yards. Sharp dogleg right, downwind on tee shot. Solid driver through the dogleg into left rough. Hook 3 hybrid 195 around tree limbs onto the green to 35', lag to 2', make it. Par.

Takeaways - I changed putters, going from a 35" to a 37" of the same model, otherwise I have no explanation for why it was such a good putting day, especially on lag putts. Still left a lot of putts just short.

It wasn't a great ball striking day - I couldn't hit a fade with the driver and I pulled several iron shots - but only had to punch out sideways on two holes (3 and 6). Never had any kind of major trouble.

Oh, and my chipping really sucks. I need to practice that.

haha played another round today, started out as a nice 50 degree day but we didn't tee off until 4:00pm and by the back 9 it was windy with a temp around 40 (and wind chill well into the 30s)

49-43-92 with 38 putts

i actually hit the ball pretty well, used a buddies stiff flex driver which has the same head as mine except i have a regular flex shaft and i hit the stiff flex way better, thinking i might need to get a new shaft because i slice like crazy with my normal driver. hit 5 GIR, its too bad every time i hit the green i ended up on the opposite side of the hole 40 feet away

i think i had more 30-40 footers this round than i have in any other round by far, seemed like every other hole was just lag putt and hope to get it within 5 feet

West Middlesex par 69 length 6119 yards

I had a poor time of it today. Warming up in the nets I was topping and pushing a seven iron straight right into a gap between the two nets and into the other guys net.
On the first tee I was praying I could get off with out embarrassing my self.
The twelve and sixteen handicappers I was playing with top it fifty yards and shanked it thirty into a bush respectively and I hit one two forty straight down the middle.
Over all my game was shaky and my putting poor but it was a stupid decision off the third tee that prevented me recording a score my two drives on opening two holes had been long and straight and I elected to hit the driver again despite the reward for a good drive being a difficult pitch. I lost the ball right into some trees and to add insult to injury a bird shat on me as I was looking for it.
Despite being just off the green in regulation on the last two holes I took doubles on both to leave our oponents with their money.
48 on the back nine.
No pars 1 blob, 2 trebles, 8 doubles, 5 bogies and 2 birdies

This might be sad but I had my first ever eagle on Saturday. Dogleg right, 250ish yard drive to the middle of the fairway around the bend, 4 iron to about 12 ft., rose to the occasion and drained a tough putt I'm probably 10% to make normally.

I'll tell you sad, I've never holed out for an eagle from the fairway in my life (say over 50 yards) and I have been playing golf 25 yrs and have been around scratch for 17 of those.

I've had 2 hole in ones and numerous eagles from driving par 4's and one-putting par 5's. Its an embarrassing stat.

101 with 5 GIR, 5 fairways, and ... wait for it ... 46 putts.

Pretty terrible on that last part, but to be fair I was using a new putter that I really like a lot more, but was very different than my old ones. It's face balanced instead of the toe balanced, which is good since I have a very straight stroke, but I have a few more rounds to practice before I start taking strokes off my already poor putting game.

On the plus side though, I started the day hitting the ball pretty poorly but was able to actually feel what was going wrong and adjust to play the last 4 holes (3-1-17-11 difficultly) only +4.

This was a new course, and tougher than I usually play so I'm pretty happy with everything but the putting. I'm thinking about going to the Georgia Tech Club tomorrow with a classmate and getting my ass kicked on what appears to be a very long and difficult course.

My short game and putter are pretty sharp for this early in the season.

I hit zero fairways and three GIR. Shot 86.

My round was not as bad as it sounds considering the wind was blowing at 20mph with gusts to 38mph. I hit an easy 7-iron downwind from 188 yards, landed it in the apron and was faced with a pitch shot from the rough over the green. Next hole ripped a 5-iron from 148 yards and watched the wind destroy the ball, pushing it left of the green and through a bunker. Exhausting.

lol, sounds like me...good first round tho.

i played a tourney two weeks ago...havent picked up a club in 4 months...hit a grounder off the first tee...hit a 6 iron from 195 about 20 yards short and right of the green..hit a fat wedge that barely cleared the front bunker and rolled 25 ft past the hole and made it for par.

2nd hole was 525...had 175 yards in...half top skulled 8 iron into a bank just over water hazard and made par..

proceeded to miss a 2 footer for bird and 3 putted twice from inside 8 ft during the round...shot a couple over...could have been 68, could have been 85 if things really started going bad.
