74.
New personal best. Not the longest course (6200) but fairly tight - tree lined on both sides on every hole. 7/13 fairways, 8/18 GIR, 27 putts. I can't remember the last time I didn't have a single 3 putt!
Just for kicks (and maybe to help me figure out why I scored so well when I didn't feel like I was playing especially well), a recap:
#1: Par 4, 365 yards. Dead into a howling 20+ mph wind. Solid driver to 145, right side of fairway. Try and cut a 4 iron around some protruding branches, pull it. Get a nice (lucky) ricochet off a tree branch to front fringe, lag putt to 2', make it. Par.
#2: Par 3, 115 yards. Again into the wind. I'd usually hit a 9 iron, hit a 6 iron about six feet past the hole. Putt too hard, make a 2' comebacker. Par.
#3: Par 5, 540 yards, dogleg right. Into the wind. Solid driver doesn't fade, hits the left side of the fairway, bounds through the rough which hasn't grown yet into the trees. Punch out sideways with 3 hybrid. 3 hybrid to about 100 yards, hits in the middle of the fairway, rolls down a slope into the left rough where tree branches affect the next shot. Punch and run 3 hybrid to about 25' past the hole, make the putt. Just dumb luck. Par.
#4: Par 4, 340 yards. Downwind. 3 hybrid to left side of the fairway 120 out. Blind uphill shot - hit a 3/4 8 iron, bounces in front of the green and rolls past the pin all the way over the back. Wat. Inexcusably bad chip shot past the hole to 10'. Left uphill putt short, tapped in. Bogey.
#5: Par 3, 170 yards. Right to left wind. Drew a 3/4 5 iron to 20 feet, lag to tap in distance short. Par. That 20 feet was 2nd closest of our group of 28 players, the wind was fierce.
#6: Par 4, 400 yards. Back into the stiff wind. Hit driver just a hair too good - instead of catching a right to left slope that would have put me in the middle of the fairway as planned, I hit it past the slope down into a gully 155 out. Punch out mostly sideways with hybrid to 125 yards. Pull 7 iron, pin high left about 15'. Make putt. WTF. Par.
#7: Par 4, 365 yards. Downwind, dogleg left. Solid draw with the driver to 100 yards. 42* Niblick too hard, just over the back. 30' chip to 6 inches, tap in. Par.
#8: Par 3, 135 yards. Downwind. Beautiful 9 iron that covers the flag. I don't get any kind of spin (old grooves, slow shallow swing, Bridgestone E6+ ball), end up 15' past the pin. Leave putt about 1' short, tap in. Par.
#9: Par 5, 465 yards. Downwind. Not a great driver, into the first cut on the right and about 230 out. Major water hazard on the left starting 140 out, protrudes into the fairway - to go for the green or even lay up anywhere close I'd have to hit a huge fade, something I can't do with a 3 wood or consistently with a hybrid. Punch a half wedge to 155, hit 6 iron to 12 feet, make putt. Birdie.
#10: Par 4, 350 yards. Back into the wind. Solid driver to 130. Tricked by the wind - the players hitting before me have their shots go left. I hit a 6 iron at the pin and the wind holds it up and takes it right. Chip in from about 20'. WTF. Birdie.
#11: Par 5, 475 yards. Into the wind. Pull driver into left rough. Hole has a 90 degree dogleg right, just need to get to the corner. Punch a 3 hybrid to 125. 8 iron is a hair too much club, hit it about 20' past the hole. Lag downhiller up to about 1.5', make it. Par.
#12: Par 4, 365 yards. Modest dogleg right but no room on the left. Into the wind. Perfect driver to 150. Pull 4 iron, pin high about five yards left of the green. Skull chip (ugh) to 15', leave putt just short, tap in. Bogey.
#13: Par 3, 135 yards. Downhill, left to right wind. Hit smooth 7 iron at left side of the green, wind carries it all the way across to the right rough. Mediocre chip to about 12', leave putt just short, tap in. Bogey.
#14: Par 5, 465 yards. Straight away, more or less downwind. Solid driver to 215, too much hook on 3 wood to about 15 yards short of the green in the rough on the left. Lousy pitch trickles off onto the fringe about 18' from the hole, almost hole it with putter, tap in. Par.
#15: Par 5, 540 yards. Downwind, playing short. Solid drive. 3 hybrid hits in the middle of the fairway, catches slope and ends up in the trees left about 100 out. Punch a hooked hybrid out onto the green. Somehow lag super evil 25' double breaker to about 1', make it. Par.
#16: Par 3, 165 yards. Right to left wind. Easy 5 iron to middle of the green. It starts pouring rain as we approach the green. Make 12' putt. LOL. Birdie.
#17: Par 4, 395 yards. Right to left wind, rain slacks off. Perfect penetrating driver, hits fairway and kicks right - right into a divot. Second shot is 130 over a water hazard. Pull 8 iron slightly chopping it out of the hole, end up just short of the green in the rough. Chip is too hard, 10' past. Leave downhill putt 2' short dead in the heart, make it. Bogey.
#18: Par 4, 410 yards. Sharp dogleg right, downwind on tee shot. Solid driver through the dogleg into left rough. Hook 3 hybrid 195 around tree limbs onto the green to 35', lag to 2', make it. Par.
Takeaways - I changed putters, going from a 35" to a 37" of the same model, otherwise I have no explanation for why it was such a good putting day, especially on lag putts. Still left a lot of putts just short.
It wasn't a great ball striking day - I couldn't hit a fade with the driver and I pulled several iron shots - but only had to punch out sideways on two holes (3 and 6). Never had any kind of major trouble.
Oh, and my chipping really sucks. I need to practice that.
