First round of the year! 81 (par 70).

Started out like a dream - four tap in pars and a bogey caused by being in the trees - if it's July, I'm just in the rough. Yanked my drive on six, hit a perfect hooked 4 iron to four feet and missed. Had some driver issues after that which will need to be addressed, but otherwise very pleased.

When Clark Nasty started posting his scores I was slightly ahead of him but now he has overtaken me. I have never come anywhere near par for nine holes.

Last two rounds have been 93/92 and despite my long game becoming more consistent over the last couple of years I cant shoot in the 80s to save my life. And I must now accept that I need to learn to chip and putt if I’m going to do it.
My putting is terrible and any chip or pitch that finds the green is considered good no mater how long the putt it leaves.
On the 8th today I hit a driver around the dogs leg of a short par four leaving about fifty yards to the green which should have been a birdie making opportunity but I hit a low heavy pitch over the back of the green and into the cabbage. The recovery was heavy as well and went flying over the green and another twenty yards past I finally hit the green with my third pitch but had about fifteen feet down hill. My first put was five feet short my second raced three feet past and mercifully I sunk the third.
Despite being fifty yards more advanced then my opponent off the tee and him missing the green with his approach I still took two more strokes.

87....43/44, on my second time out this year, on a top-3 toughest course in the area...with 2 t-shirts, a dry-fit, and a hoodie on...

was 29 windchill when i left...low 40's whole round...lolohio..

however, for anyone reading with an iPhone, ScoreCard is on sale today for $4.99 (from $19.99). well worth it, has satellite, a crazy amount of scoring options, and will completely have me golfing nearly every day this summer...

for the record, i shot a 79 the first time out, and i'm completely satisfied with the 87. greens were crazy fast, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to be golfing in those conditions..

shot 83 yesterday.

highlights:
1. played well for most of the round, had a stretch of 7 holes where I was +11 through 7, including almost hitting a bunch of cars from 100 yards out in the middle of the fairway, definitely my worst shot in over a year.

2. short game is getting good. didn't yip any chips. I decelled pretty bad and dumped one a foot short in the bunker, but I still hit it solid at least.

3. 3/4 sand saves, which is unprecedented for me.

4. my friend made his first hole and 1 and it was pretty badass. Now almost everyone that I am friends with has a hole in 1, which is probably rare...

39-42 today for an 81. Didn't drive the ball well. It was my first round with my new driver. I traded in my old Ping G5 for a Taylor Made Burner. I hit it about 15 yds deeper but I guess it'll take some time to get consistent with it.

played nine at a par 33 9 hole course. finally, after weeks of practicing short game (so boring). pretty much figured out how to achieve the point where i was at the end of last year.

highlights:

- 42 with 18 putts. yes, that's a highlight after such a long layoff. pretty sure that as good as i ever played it.

- four pars!!! three par-3's and one par-4. don't think i ever had that.

- mis-hit one tee shot (topped a 4-hy) and one 9-iron from the fairway. that's pretty much as good as i ever hit it during a round. the rest i hit flush, though certainly pulled and pushed a couple more.

- no penalties, though came close to one, but managed to find my ball in the woods and conservatively played it sideways into the fairway.

things to work on:

- short/approach game. a couple of times pulled the wrong club out. twice leaving it just short, and once flying right over.

- puttting. overall it was good, but the greens were inconsistent (actually these are sand "greens") so some are faaaaar slower than others, but i failed to notice or failed to properly adjust for that.

79 (par 70). Only one double, which is a plus. Made it through the weekend without a birdie, not a plus.

Hit the best drive and hybrid of the weekend on the last hole, nice. Blew my pitch from 40 yards over the green and stumbled to a bogey (par 5), not so much.

37-38 for a 75 today. Drove the ball well except on 2 holes and had to take penalty strokes on both. Hit 9/16 fairways. My iron play was kinda bad as I only hit 6/18 greens. My short game is really coming around though and I got up and down a ton. 29 putts including a 3 put par on the 9th hole.

Won 2 & 1 vs. friend today.

35 mph winds the whole round, and greens were unfortunately in awful shape due to some weird fertilizer/top seed combo. Bumpy and inconsistent :-(

Drove it great tho

Took my seven year old daughter out for the first nine of the year. I usually let her hit from the 150 yard marker on the par 4s and 5s and from the red tees on the par 3s. When she concentrated, she hit the ball well. I try not to coach her too much, but just two things I reminder of. Don't start your swing until you're actually looking at the ball (she sometimes starts swinging while she's still looking at a target), and swing smooth at the ball (she swings smooth back and then sometimes hacks at the ball). Anyway, she shot an 81 with a couple of 5s. She actually lipped out for a 4 on the second hole. I shot a 39, which was pretty good (for me) playing from the tips and playing it down. Amazingly I hit all seven fairways (and both par 3s). Pretty good day for all....(but I would've had fun playing with daughter if I had shot 50).

#1) hit approach inside 15 feet

#4) hit a nice 15+ yard sand save or so (pin was in the back left, bunker in the front right)

#6) hit approach inside 15 feet

#8) hit driver -> 8iron into the green and ended up pin high right on the fringe, texas wedged up to inside 2 feet, and missed the god damn birdie putt (only putt of the day i didnt line up :/)

#9) hit 3 wood into 2 club head wind to about 125 out, ended up in a monster divot and hit a shank out of it that drilled a tree and gave me another really crappy lie in the woods, ended up with only double bogey on the side

#10) hit approach inside 15 feet

#11) made a really long lag 2 putt par (ball landed front left of green, pin in back right)

#14) ball landed in a rut in the middle of the fairway and was below my feet (again :/), ended up hitting a huge pull hook into the water, 60 yards left of green. dropped, hit a high, long cut lob to 25 feet or so, drained the put to save bogey

#16) at this point im getting nervous because my round is starting to go south and i haven't had a good round in a while...i push my tee shot way right for the first time of the day, duck hook my approach into a green side waste area that is clay instead of sand, flub first shot out of waste area trying not to skull it into water like yesterday, double hit second shot out...triple.

#17) hit drive ob left (duck hook) end up with a triple

in the end i gave up 10 shots over the last 6 holes to blow the round. oh well, the 85 i shot was a nice pickup compared to my mid 90s bull**** right now.

I'm doing a round recap because I am bored. This is at my home course which is where I play 90% of my rounds. It is a 71.8/137 par 70 that measure out to a very questionable 6,373 yards (sky caddie says shorter). But, it plays much longer.

#1 362 yard Par 4
-There is a bunker in the driver target area on the left, and a road runs all down the right side. I usually hit a 5 wood, but because the wind was into me and strong, I hit a 3 wood and hit a crappy duck hook into the other fairway (I don't warm up). I had 165 yards left and hit a 5 iron short and left. I tried to putt the ball through the rough, and ended up 25 short with an awkward putt. Leave putt 5 feet short, sneak in 5 footer for bogey.

#2 358 yard Par 4:
Uphill plays a bit longer. Road all down the right side. Bunker in play on the left if you hit a good drive. It was wet, so I hit a driver to 100 yards, short of the bunker on te left. 53* caught a bit thin, but it the pin was on the right, which is the uber easy pin location. 5 feet for birdie. Hit a nice putt that caught the hole and missed. par.

#3 434 yard par 4:
Road all down the right. Fairway throws the ball into the trees. Only real way to hit the fairway is to take it over the bunker down the right side and flirt with the street. No thanks. I hook my drive over the trees and into the other fairway. 165 left. I hit a clunky 5 iron into a bunker and have a long bunker shot to a back pin. I hit a beaut to 8 feet. Putt was tracking and was halfway down before it lipped out. Bogey. Tough hole though.

#4 196 Par 3:
Pin was in the front, playing more like 165. Stock standard hook 6 iron into the bunker. Uphill lie from damp sand, hit it perfectly to three feet. Putt was straight down hill and I lipped it out on the low side. Another wasted sand save. Bogey.

#5 460 par 4:
Road/bunker down the right. Tree blocks shots from the fairway on the left. Green is on a crown and missing it right/left/or long is complete death. I hit a nice drive here that I pulled a bit. I had 178 left and had to try and cut a rescue club under the fairway tree. Instead I hit it directly into the tree and had an open 165 in left for my third from the left rough. I hit a 6 iron pure to 20 feet, putt short ,tap in bogey. I'll take it.

#6 176 Par 3:
Pin in the front again, more like 155. Plays uphill. I pulled a 6 iron a bit about 30 feet left of the pin in the rough. I putt it from the rough to 2 feet and sneak in the two footer despite hitting a terrible putt. Par.

#7 400 yard par 4:
Tee is placed way to the right on a dogleg right with water all in front of the green. I can't hit a cut, so usually end up in the left trees here, and just pitchout. Instead, I overcut it into the right rough. I have a lucky opening between two trees, but from 165 out over water in between trees, I opt to pitch out poorly to 120, hit that on the green to 25 feet. I misread a putt and hit it terribly, but it double breaks perfectly and rolls to inches. Tap in bogey. I tried to hit the second shot with a range ball and it hit a tree and went OB right, so good smart play by me.

#8 300 yard par 4:
Tee is elevated, but the hole goes back uphill after the tee shot. Bunker from 60 yards out all the way to the green on the right side. I hit 5 wood to 74 yards. I needed to hit a 90% lob wedge, but my timing sucked, and I pulled it and it went long into a bunker. Third shot was impossible, tried to play a tiger flop that went 6 feet and landed softly on a downslope, but I caught too much ball. It went over the green and I putted from the rough to a foot and tapped in for bogey.

#9 574 yard par 5:
I'm pretty pissed and lace a drive/3 wood into the wind to 125 yards. Very tough approach to a trecharous pin. Anything short at all rolls off a shaved embankment into the water. I hit a crappy nine iron to 50 feet. I putt that one to 6 feet and drain the nice 6 footer for par. Overall, 6 bogeys, 3 pars, 41 on the front 9.

#10 180 yard par 3:
Downhill/downwind, I hit a stock hook 7 iron away from the water and into the rough. Chip shot is straight downhill into the water so I putt it instead and leave it 20 feet short. Hit that putt 5 feet past, and make the comebacker for bogey.

#11 400 yard par 4:
Driver a bit right, but a nice shot. I have 140 in and hit a soft 8 iron to 6 feet. Pull the putt left and tap in for par.

#12 356 yard par 4:
Road all down the left. Bunkers right. I hit a weaksauce anti pull douche 5 wood shot to the right and have 150 left. I have to pitch it under a small tree and hit a perfect 4 iron. It catches the last branch of an overhaning tree though and stops about 30 yards short. I hit a non yipped pitch a bit too hard and it rolls through the green into light rough. Putt through the rough to a foot and tap in for bogey.

#13 370 yard par 4:
No hole fits my eye better than this even though a road runs down the left. I mash a drive as usual to 85 yards. I hit my 58 degree perfectly but I felt a little awkward with my timing and the ball landed a good 10 yards short. I putted a nice one from the fairway to a foot and tapped in for par.

#14 552 par 5:
Doglegs right/then left. Reachable in two sometimes. Road on the left comes into play on drive and second shot, especially second shot. I attempt to cut the ball over the tree but it ends up going like 220 yards. I have to cut the ball for my second and I completely over slice it onto the 11th hole teebox, 130 yards out. I barely clear a tree and the ball lands right on the flag and runs through the green into the rough. I putt the ball from the rough to 3 feet and totally push the crap out of the putt and make a bogey.

#15 154 par 3:
Wind really starts to kick up from the right. Sky caddie says it is 146 and I usually hi a 9 iron on this hole. But I think the wind is a bit in my face so i hit a SEVEN iron. I hit it pretty solid but the ball flight was weird, as was my timing. Obviously the ball hits off the rock wall in front of the green and goes into the water. I drop on the ladies tees and hit a 90 yard controlled gap wedge that lands 3 feet from the hole and jerks left 20 feet. I am pissed and go for that putt, and it power lips out and goes 6 feet buy. I 360 lipout the 6 footer and tap in for triple.

#16 404 yard par 4:
Very tough par 4, especially into the wind. Drive has bunker/trees left, water right. Second shot has narrow green, a bunker on the right, and water I crush an angry drive to 160. I hit a 6 iron that is struck as solid as any all day. It flirts with the water to the left of the green but is on the fringe, about 30 feet away. I putt it to 3 feet and push the 3 footer. Tap in bogey.

#17 354 yard par 4:
Into the wind, I hit a nice drive a little left, but only 115 in. I hit another weird pitching wedge that just gets consumed by the wind and goes into one of the well placed bunkers to a crowned and tough green. Obviously the sand in these bunkers is white sand, which is different than the sand on the rest of the course (except for one other white sand hole????) I hit an okay shot, but it runs like 3 feet to far and goes tumbling down a big hill and directly next to a tiny tree. I try some weird inside swing plane to avoid the tree and hit a half blade back over the green into the light rough. I putt from there to 5 feet and make the 5 footer for a double.

#18 par 4 343 yards:
Used to be the easiest hole on the course (and the 11th hole). They raised the green and made it about 8 yards from front to back. I hit a drive even though I shouldn't because of about 10 fairway bunkers. I pull the ball and have an opening over a tree, from 115. I hit a clunky shot that is pulled about 10 yards from the pin towards the center of the green. It hits the center of the green and goes into a collection area. I am on some awful downslope and have no green to work with. I chip it perfectly and the ball hits the middle of the flagstick going the right speed and bounces off down a big slope to 10 feet. I sneak the ball into the side door for a par. 41-44 85. Ugh. Got complimented by good looking player who said my chip was a "hell of a shot," which felt nice because chipping is usually a "shot from hell."

Overall stats: 5 fairways/3 greens/31 putts. Really though, my putting sucked a lot.

9 hole round recap since these recaps look fun and I've had a good time reading them. I was sitting at home watching the ncaa games most of the day, then at 5:40 I got the itch to play, real bad. I race out to Woodcreek golf course in Roseville (sacramento, ca) and get to the 1st tee at 6:00 exactly, and everything is wide open so I should be able to play fast. I play the front 9 from the tips, still a shorter course.

http://www.oobgolf.com/golfers/score.php?id=287470

Hole #1 Par 4 398

I have never played this course before but scorecard shows a dogleg right. I hit a thin drive which ends up barely in the right rough about 140yards away. The pin is up front and its downhill to green, so I hit a knockdown gap wedge which ends up on the back of the green. I reach in my bag to grab my putter and realize I left it at home...damn. I had a great two putt from about 65ft w/ my gap wedge and the greens were punched, so I was pretty stoked.

+0 after 1

Hole #2 Par-4 348yards

This hole was straight in to the wind so I switched from hitting a 4-iron to a 3-wood instead. I hit a bit high so it got caught in the wind, but left me with 130yards. I get up to my ball and its in a divot, so I choke down on a 9-iron and hit a great punch which barely clears the lake in front of the green and ends up 20feet from pin. I use my sand wedge this time and two putt.

+0 after 2

Hole #3 Par-4 375 yards

This is a sharp dogleg left which a narrow chute from the tee to fairway. My 3-wood (Titleist pt) is my money club so I hit a perfect tight draw leaving myself right on the 100-yd marker. I have a perfect angle to the pin, I couldn't have placed it better, but I left myself with a 3/4 sw which for some reason I can't hit right now. I block it to the right, chip it to 5 feet, then miss the putt, bogey from the middle of fairway, lol.

+ 1 after 3

Hole 4 Par-3 174 yards

I hit a knockdown/cut 7-iron to the front of the green with a middle pin-position. I get under the ball trying to putt with my wedge and I leave the 30footer about 10feet short, haha. I was left with an uphill slighty right to left putt which I knocked in thank goodness.

+ 1 after 4

Hole 5 Par-5 533 yards

Sweet, a par-5, I'll definitely get a stroke back this time. I pull my driver left into a water hazard, fml. I take a drop from 250yds out and tried to hit a cut shot with the ball way above my feet, what was I thinking? My ball ended up behind a tree and I didn't have a stright shot to the pin. I punch it just over the left side of the green about 10 yards from pin. I chunked my 5th shot just short of the green. I am cursing myself as I walk up to the ball, thinking about getting up and down for double bogey. I end up chipping in for bogey, lucky as hell but i'll take it.

+2 after 5

Hole 6 Par-4 427 yards

I block out my driver way right, leaving myself with 170yards to the pin. I take out my 7-iron for my trusty punch/cut and hit it fat, leaving myself 35yards from green. I chunk my pitch shot (wtf!). I hit my next pitch to 6 feet then sink the putt for bogey... I am now conductor of the bogey train...

+3 after 6

Hole 7 Par-4 319 yards

Sweet, another good opportunity to get a stroke back. To reach the green from the tips, You have to hit a high hook to get around the trees... I hit a low hook, ldo. I hit it hard and the hole is downhill and it looked like I got lucky and may have reach it since around the trees is hards ground and dry leaves. I search around the green for a few minutes then start walking back to the tee to hit again. As I walk back I see a ball in the right rough right next to a 100-yard marker, and it's mine. It is in a divot again, and this time I chunk it about 20yards short of the green. I hit a real good one-hop spinner with my wedge and make the putt for par...sweet.

+3 after 7

Hole 8 Par-3 219 yards

This is a real tought hole over water and marsh with tall trees on both sides. The green is slightly elevated with steep sides... I've got no chance. I punch a 4-iron which hits the right side of the green, then hops into a kinda tightly packed dirt area. I chunk the pitch, leaving the ball barely off the green, 40feet form the hole. I hit my chip to 5 feet and make the putt for another bogey which I'm really not too mad about.

+4 after 8

Hole #9 Par-5 525 yards

Ok, another par-5, I'm definitely getting a stroke back here to break 40 for the 9. It's an uphill tee shot dogleft right. I absolutely crush a driver with a little cut on it. I walk up the fairway thinking it is in perfect position to reach the green in two. The ball ended up going through the fairway, leaving me in a fairway bunker next to the 200-yard marker. The shot to the green from my angle is totally over water and since i wasn't playing in a tourney I would usually got for a fun shot like that. However the ball was up against th lip so I decided to take a pitching wedge, open the face and hit it to the 150yard marker and leave myself a full pw to the green. I ended up chunking it (no bounce on the pw, lol) 15 yards into the fairway, now with 184 yards to pin. It is barely light enough to play but I can see the clubhouse lights right behind the green. I have 184yards with what looks like about 10 yards from the waters edge to the green. I pured my 7-iron with a draw going right at the pin. I stop looking at the pin since I couldn't see if the ball landed on the green anyway, so I just stare at the water in front of the green, hoping there was no splash... there wasn't. I walk up to the hole, and it's 7:40 and getting pretty dark. My ball is 4 feet from the pin!!! I look around, hoping someone had seen it and would ask for my autograph... neither of those things happened. I set up to my putt, thinking how I will have an awesome birdie to end the 9 holes with and how I will tell the 2+2 community. I push the putt and it lips out, fml. Oh well, I got par and shot a 40.

40 +4 for 9 holes.

The driving range/chipping green is lighted so I stayed about 25min to practice chipping obv, I think I got it down now, wish me luck in the future.

Shot 38-39 for a 77 today at a beautiful golf course in Lake Charles, LA called Gray Plantation. It's ranked 3rd in LA and is in the Top 100 public courses in the nation. I stuck the ball as well as I have maybe ever, but didn't putt very well. I had two 3 putt bogeys to start the back 9. One on a par 5 where I had a 75 yard approach that I hit right over the flagstick to about 20 feet. Another on a really fun hole where I took a risk hitting driver to an alternate fairway. I hit a great drive to about 15 yds off the green, thinned my pitch 20 feet past and three putted.

The greens were in perfect condition and very fast. I hit 9 greens but the only birdie I made was a tap in after reaching a par 5 in two. It was a practice round for the HS golf team that I coach. The two kids I played with shot 75 and 77. Very enjoyable day.

9/14 fairways and 9/18 greens. 33 putts

Hole 11 is the fun hole I mentioned:
