What type of strategies do you guys use entering a match against an opponent who you know very little about? Do I just aim for Fairways and Greens and grind him down with pars? Take shots at pins and try to end it early with some flag-hunting?

Just curious to hear people's strategies, particularly related to Match-Play format.
Play the first hole like it's sudden death for the championship. And then play the next hole like it's sudden death for the championship. Continue until you win 9&8.

Repeat in the next round.

But what if our guy tends to choke in sudden death?

Played a new course for me. 70.0/118 6,340

Shot 57!-45-102 with 35 putts.

Front 9 (actually 10-18) was obviously awful. 7 penalties, 2 8s and 2 9s. Went 9-8-9 on 3 straight holes WTF. Only hit 1/7 fairways. 2 bogeys and 2 pars. 1-putted both par 3s for par. One was a lag from 54' from the fringe slight uphill that I lagged to 6' then sunk it. The other par 3 I pulled left of the green then hit a beautiful lob wedge to 2' and sunk that. 3 putted after lagging from 33' to 4'. Uggg.

Back 9 (1-9) was much better. 4 bogeys and 3 pars. Was +6 on the last 8 holes as I was speeding to finish before sunset.

Had 3 birdie putts, one from 34', one from 6', and one from 8' and missed them all. The 34' bird putt was uphill playing about 40' and it settled an inch left and 2 inches past the hole. The 8' putt was a right to left that never had a chance. Didn't give it enough break. The 6 footer was ridiculous. Very slight uphill that I hit dead straight at the cup and it was going to drop right in there when it broke like 2 inches in front of the cup to the right and stopped a couple inches past and to the right of the hole. WTF. It didn't hit anything and it was slight uphill. No idea how this thing moved but at the last second it did. So tilting. Had I hit it 7' it probably drops in. FUFUFUFUFUFU. It looked like a force field was around the cup, I mean this thing was center cut, so weird.

On my final hole I sunk a 16-footer slight downhill right-to-left for bogey on a par 5. That felt nice. All in all I was very happy with my lag putting. Only lost 5 strokes to a pro and I had been losing 8.

4/14 FIR
3/18 GIR
7 penalties
1 sand shot
5 pars
6 bogeys
35 putts
2 up/downs

HC down to 28.3. Most happy about the fact I didn't **** up my back like I did last time I played.

35-43/78 at McCann GC...

Posted my first under par 9 hole stretch!! Made two birdies and a bogey on the front, the two birdie putts were both wedges I hit inside 5 feet.

The back was tough, and I made a huge mistake hitting driver on a hole that I could hit a 4 iron to 140ish (leading to a 7), so as good as it was on the front, I have some serious leaks that need to be fixed. Specifically learning how to punch balls the right distance when I need get out of tight trouble.

Short game was very solid today, but ball striking outside of my wedges was pretty bad.

42-40-82. What a strange round.

I pulled a couple of putters out of the basement, and since I had to wait for two groups to go off I had a couple minutes on the practice green to test them out. With the first, an old Ping Y blade, every single putt I attempted missed on the right. With the second, an Anser 2X, everything missed left. Didn't make anything longer than a foot.

Stepped up to the first tee, pull hooked my tee shot, ricocheted off some trees further left, across a semi-adjacent fairway. Made triple. Nice start. Putter felt okay, though - I went with the Anser and decided to just aim further right.

The putts started falling. Ended up with 13 putts on the front. Did manage to make another triple on #9 to blow up the score, pull hooked another shot OB.

About #12 I figured out that it was a left ankle issue that was causing the pull hooks, so I started hitting the ball better (after hitting another one that barely stayed in bounds). Made an absolute bomb from off the green after shanking a chip shot.

Couldn't get a couple five/six footers to drop on 17 and 18, but still ended up with 28 putts which is very low for me. Considering my mediocre ball striking and terribad chipping it was a good day.

Holy ****

This guy was the 16 seed shooting 79-80 in qualifying.

He proceeds to lace drive after drive about 340 and I was only 1-up as I turned in 35! Managed to stay composed as he struggled on a few holes on the back and I played well to win 3 & 1 finishing the day at about even par.

Definitely expected an easier match today.

I play a very steady-eddie type player tomorrow. Need to roll a few more putts and concentrate on greens/fairways.

Do you think he sandbagged? My father-in-law is like a 1.4 and told me he plays in these tournies a lot where people obviously are lying about their HC.

It's not a handicapped match though is it? There's no reason to sandbag and get the worst seed unless you're awesome and know you can steamroll the top seeds for fun.

15 hcp.

Went and played Glen Abbey today (25x home of the Canadian Open).

Played from the golds (72.6/138).

They give you a text-GPS, which was only mildly useful, and the course map on the scorecard was awful. Guessing at hole layouts = 3 fws, 3 girs, and 4 penalty strokes.

Greens were crazy and really slow. Nothing broke as I thought it would = 40 putts.

I waited for years to play the course and blew a wonderful 103. kill me now.

the only highlight (and it was a big one): miserable and on 18, i put my drive into Tiger's bunker. with the hole cut in the same place as that final round in 2000, I was frustrated and was posting a high score anyway, so I went after it with a 4i and put it maybe 3 ft behind where tiger's ended up (he used a 6i from 210 yds).

of course I chipped to 5 ft (damn it) and missed the putt (christ). obv.

it was a nice day, i guess.

58-53-111 FML

First day in about a week and a half that wasn't miserably rainy. But I think it rained a bit at the course in the morning, and it was already waterlogged anyway, so it was a sloppy mess. A bunch of the fairways hadn't been cut in a few days, so a bunch of my drives just died. On the plus side, it was a lot easier to hit greens when your ball leaves a huge pitch mark. It wasn't quite as bad a round as the score suggests. The killer was 3 tee shots I couldn't find. Two of them I just dropped a ball and hit my fourth (sorry, rules nits), the other I had played a provisional. And there were quite a few other close calls where I almost lost balls.

Yeah it's a scratch tournament.

Honestly, I just think the guy played a little out of his mind in the early stages. It was pretty interesting because he was conceding me absolutely nothing throughout the day, despite being a very (visibly) uncomfortable in the < 4 ft range.

Personally, if I were him, I'd be very generous in giving me short putts in hopes that I'd reciprocate for him.

Fortunately, I'm a good short putter and didn't miss anything outside of 6 ft.

He threw some darts though and gave me a scare in the early-going.

Rd 2 tomorrow against a very good player. Tweeting updates if anyone wants to read or sweat. @alexjhuang (mod plz delete if this is against the rules)

86 on pretty easy course.

the good:

driving was excellent in generally. focus on releasing hands (TW "shake hands with target" works really well.

a couple of very nice 5w and 3i from fairway.

a few nice pitches

the bad:

150 yards and in was really mediocre

the awful:

putting..... didn't make one over 5feet that i remember, greens had been punched and sanded but still really terrible putting.

3 woods from fairway were attrocius. thinking should just take out of bag

didn't make one putt ever.

Shot 77 at home course (72,3/131) in very windy conditions

The good:
Iron shots from 3 to Pw were super sharp.
Made 2 puts from 8-12 feet

The bad:
Driver was loose. Out of 8 drives had only 3 fairways and 3 in trees I had to play out on fairway
Missed 4 puts from 3-4 feet

The ugly:
Had one "safe" drive end up in the water anyway
Mssed a put from 1 foot

52 - 53 - 105 and a lot of WTF moments. New course Par 70 - 67.8 / 112

Easily my worst putting day of all time... 7 3putts !!!! SEVEN !!! My speed was off my lines were off, I completely lost confidence it was just an utter disaster. A 3putt double on a par 3, 3putt bogey on a par 5, another 3putt double on a par 3, 3putt double on a par 4, 3 putt triple, another 3 putt double and ending with a 3putt quad. I also had ZERO 1 putts... Only highlight was a 0 putt when I holed out from off the fringe from 30ft with a putter...to save a triple

5/13 FWs
2GIRs
4 Penalty Strokes

I had somehow had a 37 through the front 7, but then end triple, quad I then need a bogey to hit 50 and triple 18.

Only positives are that I am very confident in my short game (only 1 "flub") in regards to getting it on and within reasonable distance consistently. My biggest issue had been from 100yds as a full AW I spray so Ive begun hitting a low punch 9i and getting it on over and over.... but it didnt matter since I couldnt break par in miniature golf today.

Thats what I get for golfing after a 2 day bender

Shot 70 in my Match Play today and won 2&1. Off to the semis.

Unfortunately my best golf friend is my opponent. He shot 71 in his match and we would have been AS after 18.

He's the lowest cap at the Club so it's no surprise that I have to play him, I just wish it was for the Championship and not to MAKE the Championship.

Semis are on Saturday. I'm not touching a club until then whereas he's practicing bunches. I'd put my odds around 4.5-1 to win

Either way, should be a great match. I'd estimate we've played 100+ matches over our friendship and he's won maybe 53% of them.

Played with some friends today who play the whites, so I did as well. Confirmed my belief that driving the ball is really the only big problem in my game. Hit every fairway (played 12 holes), lost zero balls, 1 double, 1 bogey, 9 pars, 1 birdie. Since the holes played so much shorter than I am used to I was able to hit 4 iron off every tee (except par 3's).

I really need to figure out my driving.

47 - 47 - 94 yesterday on the usual par 72. Also 50-48-98 on second ball.

Played terribly a few weeks ago in a scramble, and had taken off for a couple of weeks. No exercise and too many cigars may have added up. Played last weekend and shot a 98 for 1st time breaking 100 on a full 18, promptly celebrated by self-diagnosing heat exhaustion (but not heat stroke).

Pretty pleased with the round, especially as coulda' broken 90 without penalties. Also, no chills, headaches, or dizzyness!

Irons and wedges feel good, but mis****s have crept back in. I'd say 1 time out of 5 or 6 is fat or thin, but almost never shanked or sliced. Still working my swing out, as I'm definitely sacrificing distance for ball-striking %. I'll use my 6i for 140, and it'll work, but every now and then (usually when a bit tired) I'll sky it 170 or so. If I swing for 170, my strike % goes down to 50% or less. On longer wedges, I seem to have developed the habit of subconsciously going for the pin instead of the spot in front of the pin where I actually want the ball to land.

3h and 3w are working OK, except that I broke the new 3w in the scramble so back to the older version (20yrd shorter, and a ton harder to hit off the fairway). 3w is still my straightest off the tee by a wide margin, so using that on maybe 10 holes. Getting around 200, but mostly in the fairway.

Driver I am starting to get a little something out of. Previously it had either sliced hard or started straight for 100yds then broken hard right. Now I'm setting up far right of tee box and aiming left. Shots are coming off really low and hard, fading after about 150 or so moving right in front of the trees and then curving & landing on left side of fairway. Spin pulls the ball further right when it lands so ends up in the middle or right side of fairway getting 250 - 300 on the four pretty wide open holes. Successful 75%. It's still curving more to the right than I'd like, but certainly getting better. I'd love to be able to consider using it on normal holes!

Putting continues to go well; I think I had 3 3 putts between the two balls, and two of them were on a cup on the side of a hill, where if it didn't go in it would just roll ten feet back down the hill.

No birdies but 3 pars. With my short distances, I'm not getting GIRs and need up & down for par. I'd like to cut out the penalties and mis****s and make it to the 80s, then start to focus on getting longer shots.

When people play 2 balls do they get to count both rounds for their handicap? Seems like the 2nd ball has a slight "unfair" advantage since you see how your first drive, etc. reacts to the wind and stuff. Putting both balls from similar spot on green, etc.

What?, you canīt play two balls in any deciding round AFAIK. If this matchform exist, I am pretty sure it doesnt count regarding handicap, alone for the reasons you just mentioned

When people play as a single and the course isn't busy they often will play 2 balls on each hole. I was just wondering if you can count both as legit rounds for your HC.
