Also, I was cleaning up tonight and found my S&T DVD's. I am a believer, but doubt I will ever watch them again if someone wants to buy them. Just PM me if you are interested and we can figure it out.

Mississippi State. Graduated in 05.

I worked with some Methodist guys when I did my Pinehurst internship in spring 05. When were you there?

When it got accredited, we were told we'd have to start over and retake the classes. Half the class bailed. I stuck around for 3 years like an idiot only to know that I'd have to do the GPTP on my own afterwards. When I got sick of school, I dropped out and moved back to NJ and started working in golf and was going to go through GPTP. Class A card was all that mattered back then. Degree didn't really mean much of anything.

So yeah. Ex pro here

So I saw briefly that a black kid, who went to Stanford, had qualified via Q school for the PGA Tour. Tiger tweeted about him, yada yada yada.

So then today I click on this article and am like wtf?

I thought they put the wrong picture up, but nope, this is the kid. Whitest black dude ever.

When did referring to someone as "mixed-race" become unacceptable? His father must be pretty light-skinned for him to be that white. I guess it goes back to the old one-drop rule, but calling people like this guy, Blake Griffin, Jason Kidd, etc. African-American is a little ridiculous IMO when they could easily pass for white. They can identify themselves as whatever they want, but for the media to hop on the "OMG new Tiger" bandwagon is silly.

How bad or good is my putting?

I'm averaging 33.1 putts/round on an 11 round sample. For GIR putts my average starting distance is 24.0 feet and it's 1.99 putts. For Non-GIR putts my average starting distance is 11.9 feet and it's 1.68 putts. Overall I'm averaging 1.84 putts/hole with 1.55 3 putts/round. My birdie/round average is also exactly 1.55 right now.

Handicap is currently 5.3 and dropping btw. The starting putting distances are estimated though they are reasonable and not exactly lasered or otherwise precisely measured since I don't want to slow down play. I'm including the distances since if I was putting from 6 feet starting average I'd be the worst putter on the planet and if I was starting from 75 feet on average I'd feel pretty damn happy about things. So I think average starting distance is important to evaluate putting.

sounds pretty decent/average, with a little more practice/play you could get it down to 32. Maybe get your easier chips/pitches a little closer, there's a huge difference in leaving yourself 3-6 feet than 8-15 feet

I have a noob question. I'm keeping track of my putts per round and I count all strokes used with the putter, including putts from the fringe.

Played with my father in law yesterday who is a 1.4 handicap and he said only count putts from the green. So if I putt from the fringe, then tap it in that's only 1 putt? Is this right?

that's how they do it on tour, i usually still count em as putts if they're less a step from the edge though

I guess it matters more if I start keeping track of FIR and GIR, since they're all related.

But for now I'm just counting putts. I think I'm going to keep counting them all even if they are from the fringe. I asked him what if you sink a putt from the fringe and he said that's a zero putt. Seems weird. I sunk one last round from the fringe like 15 feet out and counted it as 1-putt.

yeah, if you count a putt from the fringe as a putt, then you probably need to count it as a gir too

If you are using Excel to track your stats I'd just add a fringe putt column. That way you can have your real putts separated from your fringe putts so you can see the stats either way or combined.

That's not weird. If you chipped in from the fringe, you would count that as zero putts. Your putter is just another club in the bag. It doesn't matter what you are hitting the ball with from the fringe.

My question is: Do we count it as a putt if we are on the green and we chip/pitch? My guess would be yes.

If I'm on the green, it's a putt. If not, it isn't. As you said, it screws up keeping track of GIR if you don't; it's the standard way of doing things; and if you track scores/stats with something like oobgolf.com it'll screw up if you do it the other way. And it's nice to have a zero-putt on the card after saving par with a 20-footer from a fringe.

I guess I could keep a separate fringe putt category if I wanted, but it's not worth it IMO. I mostly track putts to see that I'm not 3-putting (though obviously a "3-putt" from the fringe is bad too).

Noob follow-up. How often do players chip from the fringe?

My chips are inconsistent so I have been putting any chance I get. Is it common to chip from the fringe though? Is it more likely if your ball is on an uphill lie as opposed to downhill lie?

Maybe someone will disagree with me but you should putt 100% of the time if there is no obstruction in your line.
