One year we went to Mira Vista to play on Saturday early and then I sat in the booth with McCord after for the telecast (really cool experience). When we pulled in the parking lot the bag boy grabbed my bag and I wound up on the cart with Clampett. On the first tee we set the bets, hit our shots and off we went. I was a mini-tour grinder at the time so I had no life at all. On the way down the first fairway Clampett says to me "so Scott, what are your hobbies?" I respond with "I really don't have any, I guess chasing *** and having fun, how about you?" He says "I like talking to people about their relationship with God."....."Oh."

We get on the first green and McCord says "now Bobby don't wear Scott out with God talk all day, help him be a better player." Bobby: "Gary, that is how I help people get better." Scott: deer in head lights caught in the middle!
1. So what you are saying is that Bobby Clampett was totally in your dome?
2. What do you think of Mira Vista and what did everyone in that group shoot?
3. what year was this?

1. yes.
2. That is the only time I have played Mira Vista and I don't remember liking it too much. Seems like 1 was odd and there was some wacky dogleg on the back and 18 is strange if I remember correctly. No idea what anybody shot.
3. somewhere between 1998 and 2000.

Anyone have any suggestions for buying a a few hundred golf balls? I am a 100ish golfer that doesn't need a great ball, just looking for a great deal on enough balls for a couple seasons.

Vacationing in Oahu at the moment. Played at Ala Wai golf course, which is right next to my hotel yesterday. ****** muni which is apparently one of the most played courses in the world since it is the only muni in the area and open year round. Always nice to play with dad, but we had a super annoying douche as other guy in party. I feel like I end up with this guy added onto a 2-3 some pretty often. He talked during my first 3 backswings, each time I stopped and turned. He spent an entire par 5 passionately ranting to me about how we need to stop security screening white people at airports because "When was the last time someone not named habib committed terrorism?" (timothy mcveigh says hi btw) Where do these people come from? :\

Also, anyone have rec's on Oahu golf courses? I'm taking my dad to play Turtle Bay-Palmer course on Friday but I have heard mixed reviews. Anyone have any alternatives?

Ko'olau Golf Course. Rated as one of the most difficult courses in the world (hilly, target golf, long carries, thick rough, etc). Played it on 2 different business trips with my boss close to 10 years ago. I would guess I was a 10-15 HC at the time (him about the same)... stopped keeping score the first time sometime during the front 9. The next time we didn't even bother to keep score (although I remember playing out of mind that second time). Maybe you'll do what we did and just drink the whole time. Boss had some Johnnie Walker... lots of hijinx, a near brawl with another golfer over a "$2 golf ball", and nearly dying in a cart incident.

The views on some of the holes are pretty damn gorgeous for not being ocean-side. Honestly, the most memorable course I've ever played, but I've never played anything but muni's and a few decent country clubs. The course was in great condition when we played it, but a coworker was out there a 3-4 years ago and they had some problem with disease on the greens. No idea what is going on now with it. It was semi-expensive (like $130 including club rental), but it is Hawaii.

I played the Turtle Bay course back in 2005 with my father-in-law who is a 1.4 handicap. I don't remember too much about it. Our wives were riding along and chatting with us and stuff so maybe it was distracting. I do remember a couple nice holes along the water that were beautiful. Turtle Bay is on the North coast of Oahu. I remember some punks drove into us on the fairway and my F-I-L turned and started cussing them out and said he hates that about semi-public courses - that you get yahoos who are just ****ing around on vacation.

Either way, sick brag. A lot of things would have to go terribly wrong to ruin a round of golf in Hawai'i

So im watching the "skills challenge" today on NBC played at west palms beach florida. I catch Freddy Couples using his wedge in the bunker to measure 1 club length, and he grounds the wedge in the bunker. he quickly retracts the club and nothing happened. i wonder if there should have been some penalty, or if there is some local rule for the event which allows grounding a club in the bunker lol. funny his playing parter was Dustin Johnson, they might have gotten away with something there heh.

Lately I have been considering ditching the Odyssey and moving up into the world of Scotty Cameron. Not because I have any misconceptions that it will make me an awesome putter when I am average at best, but because they look amazing and are almost collectible pieces of art.

I saw Scotty Cameron's site has a custom shop where you can send in your clubs and get them customized, but I was wondering if there was a way to just have them make a new one to your custom specs? Am I missing something on their site? Does anyone know of any other way to do this? I really like the California Del Mar, but buying a mass produced Scotty Cameron putter seems to kind of defeat the purpose. Help?

Paintfill, finish, grip, stamping, etc.

paintfill and stamping thru SC online is going to be pretty limited/confined to mostly SC type of trademarks, if you wanted something more personal/unique than just initials or a SC stamp there are a bunch of different 'experts' that could do it based off of the complexity you were looking for. the model of the putter also influences what can be done to it.

Pitt,

I don't believe the Custom Shop has a retail arm for new stuff (don't want to compete against their resellers I imagine) so I think you will have to pick up the model you want from a store and then ship it to the Custom Shop.

Also, my club hosted a mini tour event this weekend. Not a huge tour, but here in Florida the mini tours are all pretty decent in the winter. Had a couple of "names" ; David Morland IV and Sam Saunders are the two that people here might recognize. There were some local legends so to speak here as well, guys that have been grinding mini tours for a bunch of years, including a couple of guys who have won on the Hooters Tour.

Anyway, the golf course held up really, really well. The wind always blows hard here, but Saturday it was blowing pretty close to as hard as I have seen it. Sunday was pretty benign though, and 3 guys played off at -1. +4 was T16 and got there money back. Out of 78 players, only 8 under par rounds over the two days. Makes me feel pretty good about carrying a 2.9 out here really.

Peach State Tour and Hooters have events out here in the next couple of months, interested to see how that goes.

On the two back nine par 3's at my club today, my combined distance from the hole was less than a foot. 11 was 217 and downwind, hit 3 iron to 3 inches dead in the jar short. 15 was 154 and into, hit punch 6 about 6 inches left. Pretty crazy.

Noob questions.

Yesterday I hit a ball that settled in the middle of the cart path. I didn't exactly know the ruling so what I did was picked it up, measured 1 club length lateral (same distance to pin) and dropped the ball, taking no penalty. Is this correct, or do I take a penalty for this? I measured one club length from the edge of the cart path, not the ball itself, which I probably should have.

Another one was a ridiculously hard par 3 with a lake between the tee box and green and really tall trees on each side which made the shot narrow. Anyway I hit like a 6 iron pretty strong and appeared strong enough to clear the lake, but was to the left (would have been playable when landing). Anyway the ball struck some thick twigs/nest in the tree and stuck up in there. This limb was hanging over the lake so the point of contact was directly above water. I went ahead and just re-teed taking a penalty and calling it my third shot. But should I have dropped the ball over near where it struck the tree and taken a penalty shot?

Another thing: I don't normally tee up iron shots from the tee-box but yesterday I tried it (on this hole). How high should I tee the ball? I teed it very low like 1/8" above ground. I'm thinking a tee level of maybe as high as 1/2" might have been better. But I have very little experience teeing up iron shots. Advice would be great, thanks.

PHB,

I'm not 100% sure, but I think its 1 club length, no closer to the hole measured from the edge of the hazard. Think you did the right thing in situation one.

2nd one the ball is in a hazard marked by yellow stakes I assume. I think you can retee there, but I imagine there would also be a drop zone somewhere if you're hitting over water. I would look for drop zone and drop there, if you don't find one, retee.

Anyone who knows what theyre talking about: how did i do?

re: teeing. I only tee it high enough with irons so that the whole ball is exposed without grass touching.
