MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread

US Senior Amateur is at a local club. I heard a story about the guy who had the first day lead. He shot 66. Told a friend of mine that "he's not a very good golfer" when he called to get inside info about the course from a member (my friend belongs there). I don't know what his handicap is but I was told it is above 2. Said he played the golf of his life to qualify. So he shoots 66 to lead after the first day. A USGA official told my friend that what the guy did was a once in a lifetime occurrence, and that he predicted the guy would shoot 81 today and not even qualify for medal play.

So guy shoots par for the second round and is in second after stroke play. Pretty incredible story.

How'd he finish?

Tournament is Sat.-Wed. Sat.-Sun. is stroke play and then the rest is medal play. I should have mentioned his name is Stanley Kinsey. Looks like he lost his first match yesterday 1 up so that's it for him. He was 1 up after 16 and lost the last 2 with a bogey and a triple.

New clubs! Just got my 16 degree adams a12 pro with a 100g tourVTS red dot shaft, hitting it super long/low for a hybrid. Iron is a demo I'm bringing down to Florida this weekend, miura 202 cb with a PXi 7.0 shaft (might be a little stiff, but we'll see). Driver is my new driver, Project X black 7.0 shaft, RBZ tour 9 degree head set at 8.25 degrees. Going to get a lesson this weekend, excited about that.

Take note of the hilarious tee marks on the a12 which I just picked up from the fitter this morning. 7 not warmed up swings+ my path being slightly over the top on average right now due to a month of hitting nothing but fades= I need a lesson. Still swinging 111 mph on average with that hybrid, ~101 with the 6 iron. Too bad the season is ending soon and I'll be too busy to get down to FL much this winter, sigh.

What's the standard way of determining how many strokes a person gets for a nassau bet? Do you factor in the difficulty of the course or do you just calculate the difference between handicaps? And how should we handle it if different tees are played?

My current handicap is an 18.3
My buddy is a 14.2

We'll be playing the following two courses this weekend, most likely whites:
69.7/138
70.8/131

The scorecards are here:

Is this Grandview's closing weekend?

Convert your index to course handicaps using the slope. If you play different tees subtract the difference in course ratings. Then play off low ball.

So if your course handicap is 14 and his is 18, if you played the same tees you would give him 4 shots. If different tees, with one rated 73 and one 71, assuming you played the harder one, your handicap for that match would go to 16. So you would give 2 shots.

Google Mixed Tee Policy if you are interested in details.

I don't think so. I called up there to see what the story was since there was snow on the ground in Bemidji and they were confident that this weekend would be fine with no frost delay.

PS: Fall golf special up there: 1 night in a golf villa (pool table, kitchen, etc), a round at Deacon's w/cart, a round at the preserve w/cart, with cart came to $170 per person.

Man, that miura 202 cb with the PXi 7.0 shaft is amazing. I definitely lose a little yardage compared to my whippy x100s with TM MCs, but my dispersion is crazy tight, and it's a much more penetrating flight.

Think I'm going to sack up and get them. Deciding between a hard stepped 6.5 (so like 6.83) and a full 7.0. PXi is a nice nice shaft, very smooth.

thought id ask this in here.

im looking to buy a new driver. I have a beginner set and i have a 16 hcp, but i think the irons are pretty decent actually(and i dont wanna buy a new set now) i think the driver could use a tune-up though. So, euhm, what are some good drivers out there or does it all depend on which one you feel comfortable with?

also, they said at my store they could get me like tested to see what kind of shaft and such would fit me best, is that really necessary?

and if not, does that mean i could buy a driver online anywhere. and are there particular sites i should check out?(like a site with last season drivers that have gone on sale?)

any help would be much appreciated

Definitely get fit for a driver that is optimized for your swing.

Most places wont charge for a fitting if you buy a driver from them. Compare the prices of the store to online and decide if you think its worth it.

i'll sell you my basically new r11 driver. hit it probably 100 times at the range and maybe 3 rounds. thought because i could turn it in that it would be the same thing as offset....i realized i'm sticking with king cobra probably forever.

i only paid $200 for the head in the wrapper and a fujikura shaft, and i'd probably sell it for less than that as i'm just gonna get whatever KC puts out this spring...

damn wiper, wish you had posted that two days ago!

i just bought a used R11 from golf galaxy for $155! it's in terrible condition which is why it was so cheap. the paint is beat to hell and it looks like the previous owner might have used it to hit a couple of balls out of the desert.

still it though, i can't believe that you don't the R11 too! nobody who isn't wearing orange pants should be playing cobras!

well, i slice. which is basically completely fixed this summer learning to swing inside out over about 2,000+ balls at the range. with my old trusty KC offset.

knowing that a) all my friends love their r11's, b) they're starting to outdrive me, and c) you can turn the face in to draw i figured it'd be perfect.

but turning in to draw and being offset are totally different.

i'm hitting longer and straighter than i ever have. if i hit 10 dead straight with the KC at the range and insta switch to the r11, slice. then i over correct and hook.

my KC is like 5 years old, they just came out with a newer version this past year that is gray with a little orange. hit my dads twice and it's my exact club only probably 20 yards longer.

i only got the r11 in the first place because our one buddy works at a club house and head the r11 head in plastic and whoever ordered it didn't even come get it. he threw the fuji shaft in and it was out the door $200+tax brand new.

i obviously could spend the fall winter at the heated indoor course until it's ready, but at this point, it's comfort and ease of mind. when i have the KC, my swing is extremely confident. i'll get a new KC head and use my old shaft. probably would even keep the grip.

anyone, or anyone knows anyone that wants one, i can get pics up somewhere. literally not more than 100 balls on the range and then maybe 40-50 times out. i was so frustrated with it (mostly because my KC was hitting dead line straight) that the last 10 times i've golfed i've had it in my bag but never took the head cover off. haha

Anyone have a suggestion for cool/cold weather headgear? All I have are your standard knit or fleece hats (I guess you'd call them stocking hat or beanie style) and they suck. Don't fit my ginormous head well and they get too hot.

If I can get this solved I'm good to play right up till it snows.

You can't find a stocking hat that fits? Jeez how big is your head?

maybe just a regular cap + earmuffs?

My head is huge and I never used to wear hats ever because they don't fit right. I finally found something that does - Titleist by New Era - so I have a bunch of those for regular weather.

Found a few options at Amazon and Duluth Trading will probably try something but a little surprised that there doesn't appear to be a killer app for this.
