What I don't remember is why? Why are Rolex watches not considered high-end amongst those that are privy? I might be overstating this a bit but I'd like to know what makes Rolex watches inferior to those watches that are high end.

I know that, as a whole, they are not in the same league of a PP, VC, AP and probably AL&S. What other watche are considered "better?"

I understand this question might be too subjective but I got into a minor debate with a friend who claims Rolex as the King.
your friend is right. well, rolex is the prince, patek is the king.

There is no "friend." I made him up.

All,

Where's the best b&m and/or online store to find pre-owned watches? How much should I expect to pay for a non-rare IWC that sold for $5k originally?

Any chance I could ever find one for $1-$2k, or is that a pipe dream

that chart is quite accurate..

if you're referring to a 5k MSRP watch, you could probably find a used piece in the 2k ballpark. watches from brands not named patek and rolex depreciate like crazy from new. i do not believe there are any IWCs in the 5k range

Every weekends when my gf drags me to the shopping mall, I drool at the window where this little beauty is sitting.

One day. One day I swear I'll get it.

Very appropriately for the conversation, Bape have finished ripping off the Air Force 1 and have moved onto the Rolex Milgauss

Any serious offer would unfortunately be way above what I can afford. One day though. One day.

Yeah I don't get the bape stuff, like, at all. Their g-shocks have induced all sorts of insanity (they're probably the most widely faked g-shocks).

That macro does a pretty good job of showing the lackluster craftsmanship of that watch imo.

If you mean the hour indexes not lining up right I'm hoping that's because of the angle the picture is taken from.

Hello, could someone recommend a semi-affordable automatic chronograph with ETA movement? I really like the Longines column wheel chronograph, IWC portofino, Glashütte Senator, eterna soleure moonphase, Wempe Zeitmaster, Maurice Lacroix Pontos and so on...

Around 42mm, black dial and around 1000-1500 USD would be nice. Anyone know of such a watch? So far I have found this but would prefer a more well known brand: http://www.uhr.info/products/en/Chro...R/UHR-275.html

Ok I need some help here. I'm seriously considering buying a nice watch. I could very well go for something that is around 2k, or I could simply wait til christmas or something and buy something that is 4-8k. I wouldn't be against buying something that is, say, 800 bucks, but I have no idea what a "good" 800 dollar watch is. There are quite a few watches in this thread that I liked that are pretty reasonable (800-1,500) but I have no idea if they are considered good to watch enthusiasts.

Here's my problem : I don't know what I'm buying. You guys know about these in-house movement thingies. I don't know jack **** about it. Is a 2,000 dollar Tag a "good" watch? How does that compare to the IWC earlier in the thread that was criticized for its movement? How do I get more information on what watch has what movements? (I don't even think I'm using this term correctly).

The only thing I know is that Rolex's and cartier's tend to hold their value (Rolex more so?). I also know IWCs are ridiculously expensive and well known. Other than that, I know some brand names like Breightling and a few others, but that's it.

Where do I get educated about this? I really don't want to go for, say, a 6k watch and make a huge error in my purchase. I actually wouldn't even mind spending that much on a watch if I knew it had real resale value. I'd probably NOT buy one for 6k if I knew 3 years later I couldn't get 1,500 for it.

Sorry for all the questions.

Most 'high end' watches come with either an in house movement which has been developed by the company themselves or with a standard 'ETA' movement which is purchased from outside. The ETA movements are being used less and less as their supply has been limited and it has caused companies like Hublot and Breitling to produce their own in house movements.

To get a basic knowledge you need to read watch forums or blogs etc. It doesn't take long to pick up really but you probably will not want to gain the knowledge first before you buy (I know I wasn't that patient).

Any watch will hold it's resale value if you are willing to buy used and wait for a good price from a good seller but if you are buying new then your options are more limited.

Nearly all brands will be able to be sold for around 50% of current rrp on the second hand market. So if you buy at sticker price you are going to lose a fair amount, but you should be able to get discounts on all of these watches.

The exception in your price point is Rolex who will offer no discounts at all but will hold around 75% of RRP if you are reselling (based on a few different factors)

Best just to pick out a bunch of watches you like here here and we'll give you the details on them and where you can pick them up for the best price.

Hamilton comes to mind. Steinhart might have something. Maybe Oris, but I don't know if you'll stay under $1500 new.

That's a big range, $800 - $8k. Post some watches that you like, and believe me, we'll express our opinions. In that range, resale shouldn't really be a concern. Like the above poster said, everything will be about the same, and Rolex will be higher (but you will have paid more in the first place).

My other suggestion would be to lurk around the Watchuseek Public forum, and get an idea of what watches & brands have good reputations in the community. Read a few "What should I get for $x,xxx?" threads, you'll see some definite trends.
