Wow. You are the last person on this forum I would have thought would be okay with white date wheels on black-faced watches.

How about chronos that intrude on numbers?

Yeah, that's a big sticking point for me. I won't say it's a 100% dealbreaker but it's close.

what about this beauty? still no good?

the dial is so nice, different colored hands don't spoil it, IMO

^^ don't like the hands-- it just doesn't feel balanced to me when this is done, I am also not a fan of the 'dart dial'. Blues my least favorite color.

Hey, just personal tastes... watch has to speak to you!

won this today on EBAY:

its quartz but whatever. got it for $300 and it seems to retail for more than double that (although going by online webstores is never a good idea) and i needed something in this range to knock around at work so its a good match.

Frederique Constant has to have the highest fancy-sounding-name-and-look : price ratio of any watch brand i've ever come across.

The Debaufre Csar PVD w/ white (and black movement);

Quick thoughts-- solidly made, details look sound, winds nicely... haven't tested the lume but pictures I had seen looked cool. The black movement is pretty cool. Movement is a bit loud, I kind of like that, but worth noting. On the criticism side; the strap may be the stiffest I have ever seen but seems to be breaking in ok after working at it a little... the second keeper isn't sized great and the strap struggles to get in to it. I have noticed a small dot or some blemish on the inner bezel (annoying!) by the index marker t the left of the '60' but I couldn't capture it with my iPhone well enough.. may cause me to try and exchange it It is a bit annoying that these boutique companies seem to always have these issues. They shouldn't bypass a quality control test and if they are conducting them should not let these things pass. Anyway, overall for the money, I like it (although square is still growing on me);

There are a couple of gshocks (2500, IIRC?) that have a week counter. WTF people do with that I have no idea.

I might be getting this or something like it. I can get a real good price on a lot of pieces. It will be for pleasure but I would also like it to retain value so it's an investment. I'm a watch noob so what are some precautions to keeping a watches value besides not wearing it? Should I not wash my hands with it on? Etc. Thanks. Been looking a lot into watches and might buy a few.

watches are like cars. Unless if you buy a few specific ultraexpensive brands or luck in to a low production number watch that picks up popularity later, the vast majority will lose value overtime even if they are kept pristine.

Don't buy a watch as an investment.

If you're buying new and you really care about retaining value, buy a rolex. You will still lose value vs. inflation over time but you'll do better than most other brands (assuming we're talking sub $15k, patek is probably a good bet as well higher up but I'm not really sure).

Better solution: don't worry so much about resale value, buy whatever you want and get it used.
