Hey ppl, looking to buy a watch with a budget of £350, which is like $550. Some watches that I like below. I'm also open to buying used to get more value but wouldn't really know where to start in the used market tbh, so any pointers there would be great.

I really know little about watches, so the choices below are pretty much on style alone. Any other suggestions ideas would be great.

Thanks in advance

those 3 are all fine watches though at pretty different prices. I would take the Christopher Ward Trident then the Spork then the Seiko Chrono but thats also the order in terms of cost so maybe thats not saying much. The Christopher ward and the Seiko Spork will be automatics while the chrono in the middle is a quartz. The Seiko spork is non hacking non winding 4r15 movement while the Christopher Ward uses a ETA 2824 which winds and hacks.

I would try to get the Christopher Ward in bracelet and then buy a separate rubber strap, not sure if that goes past your budget.

In your price range and with somewhat similar aesthetics, I would also consider the Smith's Everest and the Speedbird III, both available on timefactors.com.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Spork but just wanted to illustrate what makes the CW $200 more. I might take the Spork if my budget was $350 for example.

The Spork is kind of the mid grade watch between the Monster (us price $200) and the Sumo ($650).

Whats great about the Smiths is that its using a 28800, hacking handwinding Miyota 9015 movement which should be about on par with the 2824 in the CW, though not as venerable or time proven. For the money it is imo a great watch. and there is the UK connection with you so its like supporting a local company with a bit of historical provenance.

here is a fairly lengthy review of it

So my brother just got the Steinhart NavB Chrono...which just came back in stock mid-January. Here is a pic. Bracelet still needs to be adjusted/tweaked.

Yeah, very nice. I'm a big Steinhart fan! IWC Pilot Chrono at 1/5th of the price. :-)

Love that Steinhart. That is the exact model I got shafted on with multiple delays and poor communication from Steinhart, but I am tempted to order it now that it's back in stock.

Maybe Steinhart read this post and hates me... I just went to order it and the website is down (for me at least).

ETA: never mind, ordered!

I like the Smiths watch above but it has an acrylic crystal...i feel like this might look/feel cheap, does anyone have any experience with acrylic?

Acrylic is more "historically accurate" and many people think is has "warmth".

In practical terms, acrylic is (much) more shatter-resistant than sapphire or mineral glass but scratches like a bitch. On the other hand, you can pretty easily polish scratches out by hand and it's cheap to replace.

acrylic is a nub, there's a reason you never see it on any high end swiss watch. You have to hit a watch really mother****in hard to shatter or a crystal.

Wow I am not a Seiko fan but that Grand Seiko was very nice!

So amazingly (to me) I have already heard back from Orient. They just got a shipment of this http://orientwatchusa.com/mens/execu...ches/fdb08004b

but unfortunately the %50 off code doesn't seem to work anymore, most I am getting is %30. anyone know of a valid %50 (or more than 30) code?

disagree. acrylic is used to give watches a vintage feel. There are quite a few iconic swiss watches with acrylic, the most famous of which is arguably the Speedmaster professional. But if thats not considered high end, then you have the JLC Polaris and its modern tribute. The BP 50 fathoms and select modern versions. Then you have one of the granddaddies of Rolex, the Milsub.
