the only two Pynchon books i read were Gravity's Rainbow and The Crying of Lot 49. wow, those were dense. made two trips through Rainbow and still not sure i know what's going on. it is more than apparent Pynchon was highly intelligent in a wide variety of subject matter, unfortunately i am not. doesn't mean i didn't enjoy the ride...more like i'm not sure i was/am in the place to fully appreciate them.

RIP.

Found a few hoaxes, but that's sort of the internet of things. I guess you made it when no one knows if or when you kicked the bucket.

I tried "The Crying Of Lot 49" but didn't get more than a few pages in.

Looks like he's not dead though.

I hear his condition was exceptionally painful; I hoped he would be around a lot longer.

As Christopher Hitchens said in the wake of Jerry Falwell’s passing, give the body an enema and you could bury him in a matchbox.

just got off the phone with my Dad, as it is his 85th bday. H is mourning the death of Limbaugh. Calls him, "one of the truly great Americans...no one can dispute that."

I don't talk to my Dad much anymore these days.

Lol, you leftos are so ****ing smug, honestly it's hilarious. You know exactly what's right and true in the world, and you're mighty proud of it! But now look, I let your misplaced inappropriate politarding get me a little irritated. So I guess that makes me wrong too.

It really has nothing to do with what side of the aisle he was on. If you have listened to his show for any significant length of time, I don't see how one could come to the conclusion that he was anything other than a despicable person. His show was just full of hate, hate, hate, nonstop.

Accusations of smugness are ~always hypocritical if not just projection. As if conservatives don't think of themselves as better and look on "leftos" with contempt.

well said, and this is the root of my post above.
his show seemingly had a singular purpose, which was to drive a cleaver between what used to be relatively similar views to only accentuate the differences, not the similarities.
us or them, right or wrong, my team or your team. that's what we're left with now.
the populace seems compelled to pick one of the extreme sides instead of being made comfortable finding a place somewhere in the middle where most want to be.
i could fill the next several lines with examples of the pejorative terms that kiosk used (from both points of view), but i won't.
come on folks, we can be better than this

It's mostly not even ideological or of any substance politically. That's not to say that there aren't differences between parties, but they are incidental for the most part. Among the shrinking segment of the population who actually register D or R most of the difference is just despising the other the way Giants fans hate Dodgers fans. There's no middle to that.

I always thought Limbaugh saw an opportunity to make a fortune selling victimhood, and took it. I thought he was a creep, but I really detest the society that made him possible.

This hasn't been true for while. A giant section of the population has taken a giant right turn into fantasyland. In large part due to the deceased and his media spawn.

I detest all the gods that make religion possible.

And to put this thread somewhat back on track - God is still Dead. See Nietzsche. Good old Friedrich Nietzsche even wrote a few books. Some are even worth reading. Best to burn them after though. You can't be caught in possession of such subversive literature. You should only be reading the right kind of books.

Well written.

For reasons that I can no longer recall, it occurred to me a month or two ago that you never hear anyone say something like: "Good. He was a miserable son-of-a-*****, and deserved to die" about someone who's recently deceased.

I think that applies in this case.

We have to be careful about how we view narrative via celebrities. Controversy sells, and they focus on the needs of their core audience of 25k or whatever, and doesn't reflect society as a whole.

Sort of reminds me of that line from Howard Stern's movie, about how 85% of his audience hated him. It didn't matter because it sells ads. For some reason, people don't make the same connection on social media. These "influencers" are entertainers, not thought leaders, no matter what label they put on their profiles... 5 years ago, the anti-Trump crowd were posting about "balling at Trump towers" for likes and follows. Either case, both sides pull the victim card, and I do my part by not sharing or responding. I move past, mute, and block. We make the mistake of amplifying the very things we wish to silence when we react to it.

I have no opinion on Limbaugh. He wasn't the first, nor will he be the last at his game. I never listened to his show, so I'm taking your word for it.

Martha Stewart, Actress in 'Daisy Kenyon' and 'In a Lonely Place,' Dies at 98

I'm not a film person, and don't know anything about her. When I ran across the headline, I thought it was Snoop Dogg's friend, but this isn't the same woman, so figured I'd share it in the hopes that someone else can flesh out the details.
