On November 9, 1979, Brzezinski was woken at 3 am by a phone call with a startling message: The Soviets had just launched 250 nuclear weapons at the United States. Minutes later, Brzezinski received another call: The early-warning system actually showed 2,000 missiles heading toward the United States.[31] As Brzezinski prepared to phone President Jimmy Carter to plan a full-scale response, he received a third call: It was a false alarm. An early warning training tape generating indications of a large-scale Soviet nuclear attack had somehow transferred to the actual early warning network, which triggered an all-too-real scramble.
RIP Brzezinski. Whatever else you did, thanks for waiting a few minutes there.

Manuel "Panama Manny" Noriega has died, 81. He ran Panama until we invaded his ass a while back.

I always liked Brzezinski's style. Go Zbig or go home, baby.

RIP Jimmy Piersall

He was an outfielder for my Chicago White Sox and later became a broadcaster for them.

Early in his career he battled mental illness and they even made a movie about him, "Fear Strikes Out" starring a pre-Psycho Anthony Perkins as Piersall.

I always loved Piersall. Anybody who takes a can of bug spray with him to the outfield has my undying admiration.

Wasn't he mainly a Red Sox guy? A little before my time, I mostly knew of him from the movie Fear Strikes Out. He sounds like quite a character, probably way tougher being mentally ill back then.

Yeah, mainly a Red Sox, but I remember him playing a few games as one of Casey Stengel's Mets in 63.

Glenne Headly, actress, 63

Always interesting actor, founding Steppenwolfe member with ex-husband John Malkovich, more know for her stage work than her films, but still recognizable as the wife in Mr. Holland's Opus and the high-priced lawyer in The Night Of. She also co-starred in ER and Monk.

RIP The BEST Batman

When I was about 11 years old and this first hit the TV it was my one and only must watch TV show. Mr. West was perfect.

Adam West's groovy 60's Batman is by far my favorite Batman. Remember the Bat Shark Repellant Spray?

yeah...some of my earliest TV memories in the early 70s were of watching West play batman. when i was but a wee lad i had the toy car that towed the bat boat and shot plastic misslies. when i was but an adolescent lad i became very much aware of julie newmar, eartha kitt, and yvonne craig (and of course lee meriweather in the movie).

I know I could find the "Bat Can of Bat Shark Repellant Aerosol" on youtube with a little searching, but my memories of it are so grand that I don't want them ruined by reality 50 years after the fact. Pretty sure he is dangling from a helicopter, half swallowed by a foam rubber shark, before he can get his hands on it and get it deployed.

Easily the pinnacle of 20th Century artistic achievement.

I have a great story of watching the Batman TV show being projected on a bedsheet in the driving rain at Dong Ha in 1967, but I'll leave that for another day -- probably would have had to have been there, anyway.

RIP, the only real Batman. POW!!!

As a kid I didn't even get that Batman was camp. I thought it was just very dramatic and a little scary, still loved it. West doing that slow talking thing was awesome, he might have been even better than Shatner at that.
