Karak or someone else credible can correct me if I'm wrong in thinking this final approval committee still gives us some 1 in 10000 shot.

I don't think it's quite officially over yet. Potentially some sort of miraculous slip-in at the last minute? I believe Kyl and Reid are members of this final approval committee that seems to have the power to make some changes before signing off on the package.
Not to stir the pot, but this has what Reid said he wanted to do all along, get it in at the end when it can't be amended...

Heh. I can't bring hopes up for this one. It seems like they've been arguing over a few billion to finish up the negotiations:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0212/72929.html

If a few billion is a big deal, how could Reid not bring up the poker thing?

I am wildly guessing here but I wonder if Sen Akaka had anything to do with stalling this for a bit more. Again, wildly guessing, but it was weird how he put up his article about not rushing to regulate ipoker, then took it down (as if to confirm facts with Reid), then put it back up a short while later.

i mean i know i speculated the payroll bill was the best vehicle (and apparently was quite wrong), but there's plenty of fine vehicles next couple weeks.

honestly i think this hinges lots more on variables completely unrelated poker than it does to poker itself

Payroll bill WAS the best vehicle; don't be so results oriented as "best" was a relative term in comparing longshots.

"Variables completely unrelated to poker" will always matter more than poker itself.

Never underestimate Harry Reid, period. However, I do not see him pulling that big of a rabbit out of his hat or wherever he keeps them.

There are still major legislative forces to contend with.

Democrats Trying to Undo Pension Cut in Payroll Deal

Quote:
“We’re still working on the details; there are a lot of conversations happening,” Van Hollen said this evening.
Quote:
“I’m not interested in hurting middle-class workers, regardless of where they work, to help other middle-class workers. It seems to me that’s a wash,” the California Democrat said. “We’ve always said to our Republican colleagues, to the degree we have to come up with pay-fors, they should be common-sense pay-fors, and ultimately what the pay-fors are going to be ... that’s the reason why you haven’t seen [a deal]. That’s still part of the discussions.”
Ipoker/UIGEA II ?

Im using my first ever one-time.

Im not sure you can put poker in as an offset without the CBO scoring it.

Im just relating the grumbling I see from others. I do most of the daily stuff plus
other things. But when I ask some semi-casual players why they dont do anything, that is the gist of the response I get. What do all you poker acquaintances who dont participate give you for their reasons?

Have there really been like 600 or so posts in this thread in the last day or two? Guess I'll just jump in here and call myself caught up. I know nothing happened yet, and that something still could, so I'm prolly all set.

All bets off for Internet poker in payroll deal

Quote:
A senior Hill staffer confirmed to POLITICO on Wednesday that regulating Internet poker at the federal level will not be part of a tentative deal reached by congressional leaders to extend a payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits.
Quote:
“Airdropping this into the payroll bill wouldn’t sit well with a whole bunch of people from a process standpoint,” a source familiar with the discussions said, pointing to the current brouhaha unfolding in the Senate over an attempt to fast-track cyber security legislation.
Quote:
Another vehicle could present itself later in the year in the form of the president’s anticipated jobs bill, sources said. Or backers of a federal Internet poker law might have to wait until a lame-duck session to try and push through a stand-alone bill.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to see exactly that play out, then hear the likes of Bacchus whining to the media about how wrong it is to put poker regulation onto a totally unrelated bill. The irony would be massively entertaining from the winning side.

EDIT - Also, I'm concerned that we really need it in a pay-for situation, which the new cyber security bill (which may or may not even be something we would all support) won't provide. Maybe it will ultimately have to be the new jobs bill, under the explanation of creating new jobs for Ipoker companies and regulators...

Thank you for all your effort in this but to be honest from the article I read it doesn't look good for poker in 2012....
