i pretty much agree with sarcasticrat. I enjoy shawshank but its not top 10 or anything for me. I can see why people might think that, and i would never think they have poor taste if its their favorite movie. Obv I think pulp fiction is better and should have won best picture...chim knows whats up.

Shawshank loses points as GOAT imo because it's technically unoriginal and the themes are all very safe and unchallenging. It also uses too much narration and has zero nuance.

most movie concepts are unoriginal. some of shakespeare's greatest works were technically unoriginal. unless it's a carbon copy of a recent take on something, that's not really a fair criticism.

Doing some road trip next weekend, but the weekend after that I'll go to the liquor store and pick up a few bottles.

by technically unoriginal I meant that there weren't really any innovative aspects to the actual making of it, like 2001 or Citizen Kane.

saying most/many legit critics consider shawshank "one of the best ever made" is straight ignorant.

Depends what you mean by "one of the best"

Top-10, definitely not
Top-100, definitely

Made Ebert's "great movies" list, good enough for me

The best thing about shawshank (aside from everything else) is that you think it is over and was a good movie yet there is still a ton of the movie left. The "ending" of the movie is literally like 45 minutes long.

I haven't seen Shawshank or Gump in a long time, but they're both very solid story-wise with some very good to great acting. Maybe I'm just a sucker for sappy films.

I see a lot of people get annoyed whenever Forrest Gump comes up and I never really understood why. Yeah, it stole an Oscar from Pulp Fiction, but on it's own it's a fine movie (maybe my opinion would differ if I re-watched it now). The Academy Awards suck, I put about as much stock into their recent winner selections as I do into All Star games.

Sounds like fun. Post updates on what you end up getting.

Also, on that note, I just picked up a Lagavulin 16 last week. Still unopened. Will report back if was worth the buy.

Cheers to all.

PS: on 4th glass as of now.

If you could merge yourself with the essence of hope itself then you would see glimpses of the Shawshank Redemption playing.

Sandlot is in a different boat all together. People who love the Sandlot love it for reasons that are separate from 'critical acclaimness'.

Personally, I love it because it reminds me of my childhood and the neighborhood and group of guys I grew up with. IMO, it is in the GOAT category, but I know it doesn't hit home with everyone the same way; which is ok.
