it's super fabulous if you have tons of money (and I mean TONS), my father inlaw is only a partner at a huge law firm so he's on the wrong side of the "tons of money" dividing line. It's also great if you're a degenerate.

Anything in between, it sucks balls.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, & Beertalk

last time I was in NOLA I had to drive around a pothole so big and so old that it had three-foot weeds growing in it (and I mean three feet above street level, plus however deep it was). And this was in a nice neighborhood (ie. in front of a $750k house).

ikes, I know you've talked a lot about having kids

NOLA is an awful, terrible place to raise a family

it's even worse if you're not from there, old boy network is huge there.

You don't, cost of living is fairly low actually.

Yeah, but like you said that applies anywhere, don't see how the utility curve of $$$ is much different in New Orleans than other cities, if anything would have thought money would be less important there than other cities. Can't think of anything that not having a ton of money would exclude you from there other than a sick house.

That is what I thought.

Anyway, know two people that have lived there, one absolutely loved it (and is not a degenerate), the other absolutely hated it, just depends on personal preferences. It has a lot of fun things to do and is unique/has alot of character, and that can easily overwhelm the negatives if you are drawn to them. On other hand it is dirty and not well maintained, if you can't get over that then you are going to hate it.

Yeah I mean you can get by in NOLA on $50k no problem (assuming the giant killer mutant rats don't get you.). You're just going to be either living in a dump or way the **** out in the boonies and either way your kids will be going to crappy schools and you're going to need to replace the suspension in your car every six months.

Also noze forgets that cities other than new orleans also have things like plumbing and electricity now. When you adjust for his coke-addled assumptions, his posts make a lot more sense.

As opposed to all the other major cities where you can comfortably raise a family on a $50K salary.......

NOLA is suuuuuuuper cheap to live and have quite a leisurely life. But I'm in Chicago, so maybe changes my outlook.

I considered Tulane Law a couple of years after Katrina, but now that I'm within two or three years of hopefully being a father, this is my concern. Sure, LOL Chicago schools, but there are great gifted programs and the neighboring suburbs have great, financially manageable living standards/safety/diversity with very good and great schools. The only thing that really keeps me from NOLA is the education system there, but otherwise the real estate value is great, IMO.

Milwaukee?

Spoiler:

I may be out of touch in my ivory tower, but I'd think $75k would a more reasonable talking point for a family of four with two educated parents.

Oh you were actually serious. LOL at living in a dump or way out in the boonies on $50k. A good amount of my friends are in the $35k-$50k range and not a single one lives in a place anyone would describe as a dump and they are all in the Uptown/Garden District/Downtown area. Some of us make more than that live in pretty nice places. We're all 23-27 years old. Yeah if you're closer to $35k you might have to take on a roommate to avoid a studio or something, but lol at that situation being unique to New Orleans.

Charter schools have replaced a lot of traditional public schools and have improved quite a bit since Katrina, but I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on this or anything.

I've never even had to come close to replacing my suspension. Not saying the roads in a lot of neighborhoods are great, but using hyperbole hardly helps your point here. You might have to drive a little slower in areas you don't know, oh noes. I'll put up with that for the nightlife, weather, food, events, outdoors options, etc that living here provides.

I'm not even sure what this means. Congrats on your low Fedex rates in Memphis though!

And obviously if you go out to the 'burbs the schools get better. That's pretty much universal.

My example of Chicago to NOLA is heavily weighed by the Chicagoland area's infrastructure. Oak Park and Evanston are 15-20 minutes from the Central Business District via rapid transit on a bad day.

If NOLA had comparable infrastructure, the greater metropolitan area would be more desirable, relative to others, when you factor in the need to live in outlying areas for better-than-base level satisfactory education.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog, & Beertalk

Yeah Chicago's train system is obviously much better than New Orleans streetcars, but it's also much much bigger so a drive from the Burbs isn't that bad here. Unfortunately New Orleans is old as **** and the main city limits have been settled forever, so building anything like that would involved demolishing a bunch of **** and it's never going to happen. I do love Chicago though, would absolutely live there late spring-fall.
