We have picture day like once a year in the NBA thread, maybe do that in the free money thread so you'd know what riverman looked like

Yeah pitching in baseball is dumb.

How about no more approaching the mound by the catcher/coach (lol baseball I know there's a term for this), no more giving pitchers warm ups when they come out of the bullpen, JUST LET EM WING IT. GO LIVE BITCHES. Throw or get the **** out.

It's just like the NBA, I'd care way more if there weren't so damn many games where each game is pretty meaningless. And pacing sucks too of course

Ya, 162 games is just absurd.

Honestly after last year, I wouldn't mind the NBA dropping 8-10 regular season games and starting on Christmas every year. I think it would go a long way toward getting even more exposure.

Also hate that they have 5 minutes of warm ups for the fielders each 1/2 inning. I'm sure this has to do with TV and Radio ads, but still this is pure AIDS.

Not much you can do here. Need the huge sample size given the mechanics of pitching/hitting. 20 game seasons would blow hard.

Shorter seasons are so much more exciting. Maybe not an NFL model, but cutting the NBA & MLB seasons in half would be awesome. Fewer playoff teams, longer playoff series and voila, top tier entertainment.

I can't remember who but someone in the American sports thread made an amazing post on why long baseball seasons are awesome and have it all for the fans. On my phone or id go find it.

I like the long haul of baseball. 162 games is a lot, but the regular season still seems to go down to the wire and have dramatic finishes much more frequently than like the NBA (where the regular season is essentially pointless and drags on forever in terms of days elapsed imo). Having a game with your favorite team almost every day is pretty great to me.

The pace of the game is a bit slow, but meh. Similar complaints could be made about all the sports. Baseball holds my attention for whatever reason.

Cutting NBA in half would be nuts for sample size reasons, but I think mid-high 60s for games starting on Christmas and doing everything possible to limit back to backs would be great for the game.

Not to mention, baseball is a game that can be played well in so many consecutive days that it really just maximizes on: (a) always having teams available to watch on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; while still (b) playing two teams per week.

Six months, playing two teams per week is loosely 144 games right there. I could see shortening to this, eliminating four-game sets, or slightly less with two-game in-division sets here and there to unbalance the schedule, but you're still talking about a highly effective and meaningful 136-game season. And I don't see how a baseball season can span less than six months outside of removing interleague play (and that will never happen with NY, LA, and Chicago having two teams in separate leagues), otherwise, the schedule gets really mangled.

this. the lockout season was great except for the condensed schedule, nhl and nba could take 20 games off their schedule

Outside of attending a few games in person every year, hard to keep regular season baseball on as more than background fodder. Actually like the game, but so much time suck.

I like having a game every day. You don't have to watch them all. Playoff baseball is great because the pauses between pitches just adds to the tension

Fine with shorter nba season (70 or so.. Enough to eliminate back to backs, though u enjoy back to backs when traveling to cities to NBA), but i still like it to start in November.

Yeah but aren't you a Yankees fan? In that case it's probably awesome. For everyone else watching at home it sucks.

Typical Yankees/Redsox 5-minute swatch of action. Game is 8-0 in the 7th.

Pickoff attempt at first.

Mound conference (catcher and pitcher)

Pitch - 18 inches outside. Don't want to give in to the hitter on 0-0 in an 8 run game!

Pitch #2 14 inches above the strike zone
Pickoff attempt
Mound confefrence (this time with pitching coach and middle infielders, too)

Next pitch is hit 880 feet.

baseball is on everyday and is a companion. if youre home the game is on, and you only need to give it part of your attention. its just comforting that it's there, and when the seasons over and gone you miss it. baseball is measured in series' not games and is all about the long haul, not short payoffs. baseball means its summertime and its nice out and you can sit outside and drink beers and have the game on the radio and its just as good as watching on tv.

then the weather starts to cool and the games get bigger and bigger as the pennant races tighten up and you do start measuring in games and it does feel as exciting as a football game.

then you make the playoffs and you eventually find your whole season, all those hundreds of games youve tracked and invested time and emotion in all year, starting to be measured not in games but in outs and then eventually in strikes. this is when baseball is at its finest, when the slow pace of the game perfect for a lazy summer afternoon morphs into a crazy sadistic device that drags out the almost unbearable tension and lifts baseball to just a higher level of spectator sport.
