OK, well the exact situation I described was a little exotic so I wouldn't expect you to have exact data on that, but I would be interested to see what you think about my evaluation of simpler situations. Let's say a team's playing on the road as a 7-20 point favorite the week after beating a Top 10 opponent. What would you consider that kind of letdown situation to be worth? You really think giving 3 for that is excessive? How many points is that worth in your experience.


Yeah, I agree with this. Really tilts me too the way they patronize them considering they've been absolutely dominant the last few years.

I like how the announcers keep saying, "Kellen Moore STILL IN the game....." Like Boise State isn't gonna try to run up the score. They've seen BSU games right?

I agree with that thinking. BSU plays a very weak schedule overall. The computers are killing Boise in the BCS standings. La Tech isn't going to help them. If Va Tech goes down to G. Tech then I think the computers will punish Boise St. even more.

So Boise needs the "style" points for the human polls to keep them high in the rankings. Otherwise, I think that TCU, Missouri, Alabama or hell even Sparty could pass Boise in the overall BCS standings.

The sickest part about BSU us that half their roster is white dudes from Idaho. You try making a top 5 college team with those resources.

Have you? I love the comments from clueless people who just want to say anything possible to degrade Boise. BSU doesn't run up scores. For their past 4 games the starters have been coming out in the third quarter, and in at least two of the games Kellen Moore didn't even play in the second half. They put up 41 points on SJSU in the first half and then played their second and third stringers in the second half and finished it out 48-0. What would you have them do? Pull the starters in the first quarter when they were up 21-0?

Of course, if it were me I would have had the offense on the field again after LA Tech decided to onside kick with 40 seconds remaining, but Chris Petersen isn't like that.

I love how idiots like Jimmy Proffett want to believe both that BSU is just running up the score on bad teams AND that BSU just isn't that good.

If we had a real playoff and not this BCS crap. Boise would get a fair chance to win the national championship. I think Boise would do quite well in that format and possibly win out.

The problem with Boise is that their SOS is dependent on one or a few teams each year performing well. Last year it was Oregon's performance that pushed Boise up in the computer polls. This year it is Oregon St. and Va Tech that Boise has so much riding on their performances for this season.

Boise has lived dangerously for a long time because that team is hurt playing in the WAC. That situation will get better next year when Boise moves to the Mountain West. For the last two years Boise has had high mid year BCS rankings only to be pushed down by the end of the season. It appears this situation may happen again. The bulk of my criticisms are ultimately aimed at the current BCS system and not Boise St.

Wiz, 5 years ago I would have said, "screw playoffs, just give me back Pac10 champ vs. Big 11 champ in the Rose Bowl." But since I'm never going to get that and I've now become a fan of the MWC and UNLV (now that I live in Vegas) I am 100% behind the idea of playoffs. But how do you choose the partcipants? BCS 6 plus 2 others? That would still screw a lot of teams. No one can currently argue that either an ACC or BE team should be included in the top 8. Or just the top 4? In that case, do we lose TCU/Utah, Mizz, or MSU?

But back to BSU, TCU, and Utah: all 3 of these teams are tending towards blowing out their competition, and their competition are still tending towards top 100 programs. Obvioiusly the SOS is much less than Pac10 or SEC schedules, but you can't ignore what they are DOING to their opponents - which is exactly what the current BCS system does. It includes biased human voters that think "WAC and MWC football is TERRIBLE!" while excluding MOV from computer ratings systems. Yet, for some reason, many pundits don't get this. Tony Kornheiser says 2-3 times a week, "BSU really needs to run up the score in these games to get the help they need from the computer polls." It's frustrating.

Hey CSC, does UNLV have any real fan support and program loyalty? That could be such a sick program if they were just super gangsta like Tark's basketball teams, got tons of Jucos, got some U swagger and wrecked on people. Instead they are just woeful and backwater.

They are the only meaningful local team, so... sort of. I'll be going to my first UNLV football game this saturday (vs. TCU) so I can give you an impression on Sunday, but their basketball, even when a top 25 team, does not sell out their 18k seats, but I have gone to games that have probably sold 16k. You do see more than a few UNLV bumper stickers, t-shirts, hats, etc. I think if they were in the Pac10 they'd get a lot more support, but playing in the MWC just doesn't interest most sports fans.

*I found a 2/10/10 article that had last year's average attendance as of that date as 13,600 for basketball. I'm sure it's possible for a good football team to draw decently, but UNLV football has been attrocious for so many years. It looks like they haven't finished above .500 since the early 80s.

UNLV football doesn't and hasn't ever gotten much support. The stadium is not on campus and is not conveniently located at all. The only time I'm aware that they ever sell out the 40-45k-ish stadium is when some team like Wisconsin or BYU comes to town and they turn it into a road trip Vegas home game for themselves. Wisconsin especially loves to bring 20-30k fans here for a big party in Vegas.

UNLV basketball has gotten good support since Lon Kruger took over. The arena is on campus and it seats 18k+ which is big by college standards. UNLV campus is only about a mile or two east of the strip so it's pretty conveniently located. Even if they only rarely fill it up they still get good crowds. It's still nothing compared to the glory days of Tark which the old timers never miss a chance to point out.
