FWIW I question his actual popularity since online dating makes no sense for somebody who is A) In school and B) popular. That's a far more efficient + convenient dating network than anything the Internet may provide.

And even if he was an athlete with decent social standing, that pales in comparison to somebody who has the celebrity status of Te'o. He surely could have most anybody he wants in the ND student body, so why bother with silly online BS?

Isn't the most likely scenario something like this:

1) One of his friends jumps on the grenade and assumes full responsability
2) He pretends to be really mad
3) He sticks to that story, and say as much to NFL scouts and staff
4) He gets drafted at worst by Carolina at 14, who figure he can't be much crazier than people who shoot others, do or sell drugs, etc...

I dunno, I think the ending of this isn't going to be as epic as many hope for. The really fun stuff is going to be the locker room talk, and the amazing jokes on the field we'll miss. The other thing is if his father is a giant homophobe, and he felt he had to invent this to keep his dad loving him. That would be pretty messed up too.
