I have been watching a lot of this coverage and I hear many people speculating that Manti is lying because an internet girlfriend sounds so ridiculous. I saw what I think was a screenshot of this girl's supposed Facebook page and sure enough there is a drawing of a temple on it. Manti has referenced how close she was to her Heavenly Father.
Many, many Mormons go online to meet fellow LDS members to date. We are strongly encourage to date those of our own faith. I grew up in Indiana and there were so few LDS guys to date. It was difficult. Manti found this beautiful girl who was of his faith and who depended on him.
These disgusting individuals played on Manti's love of his faith and his willingness to help others who are suffering. LDS kids are taught to serve, help and be kind to everyone. Here is this faux LDS girl who is suffering, who needs him, who makes him feel like he is a good person. People use this tactic all the time to scam Mormons. In fact, Utah is number 1 in the nation when it comes to the number of scams committed. PTI today said that Manti seemed simple in their last interview with him, even saying he was almost childlike. We are taught that we should be as a little child and very humble.
My point in all this is that is is very plausible that Manti thought he connected with this girl in a way he couldn't connect with those around him. I don't believe Manti necessarily considered her the love of his life until after he thought she died. But, haven't you noticed that when people die, all of a sudden they get built up to a level that maybe they weren't before they passed away. Maybe Manti convinced himself that the relationship was actually more serious in nature than he believed before. Especially the way the media built it up.
I can't explain away everything. Of course I want to see some internet and phone records. The SI article has shown me that he never said he actually met her in person. But he has been such an inspiration to me, who loves Notre Dame with all my heart and my religion with all my heart. I have used him many times as an example for my kids. I just don't believe that the Manti Te'o I have believed in is the one who doesn't exist.
