Meh. I think parts of it are right.

I just think he exaggerated the story to the media/his parents in order to not make himself look stupid and it accidentally got blown out of proportion by a bunch of ****ty media outlets who couldn't do their jobs.

I don't really think it was a conscious "HEISMAN!" thing as much as a "ATTENTION!" thing. I also don't think he was "in on it" from the beginning or whatever because I don't think it makes any sense.

Sometimes lies spiral out of control in ways you never expect them to. I really doubt when he began exaggerating the girlfriend thing at the beginning of the season he had any idea it would ever get this much attention. Then once he started, he couldn't stop.

At this point I am much more intrigued by the Toiasaosopo guy. Why the hell does he keep doing this? What's his angle? Who are the girl(s) who work with him? Why do they do it?

Easy. Stop agreeing to interviews about your dead girlfriend.

Meh again. If he stops agreeing to the interviews, maybe they start investigating it? Who knows. He's not a crisis management professional, he's a 21 year old kid, he doesn't know what to do.

Just looking at the timeline, none of it makes sense unless he was in on it the entire time. There was a claim he met her, then he claims he didn't. Calls her his girlfriend, she "stands him up." Just sounds like he's making up the entire thing and as people are uncovering more and more, he's inventing other stories to try to cover his ass. The whole running from a drug dealer thing, the whole Nigerian scam thing, this is just him trying to make it look like he's a victim. All IMO of course.

Where are the phone records? Should be really easy to prove whether or not he was actually ever on the phone for 8 hours at a time with someone he thought to be his girlfriend.

Was he really doing interviews "about" her? I got the impression it was more just something that was repeatedly brought up by reporters who were interviewing him mostly for football reasons. He can't very well just stop giving interviews entirely. And once he's caught in the lie, what's he supposed to do when they bring it up? Burst into tears and confess on the spot?

I never said he wasn't being an idiot. I never said he wasn't wrong. I just don't think he was in on it from the beginning. I think he made a series of stupid decisions and it backfired on him as ND's/his profile continued to grow during the season.

Seriously think about it for a second. If ND loses 2 of those insanely close games they won this year it's reasonably likely none of this ever happens. You think the South Bend Tribune is going to go after the senior captain of the football team?

I thought, given the amazing amount of weird evidence against him, that the story he told Schaap last night was about as good as it gets. That's basically the exact story I would have told in his situation.
