I’ve also seen that antibody tests had around a 5% false positive rate so that would need to be accounted for when trying to determine how many people had actually had it

Everyone is undercounting both infections and deaths but everywhere is also seeing high fatality rates with the world currently at 6.7% average.

Even with lack of testing, I don’t see the fatality rate as being sub 0.5%...1% is a good ballpark number to use...that accounts for only finding about 1/10th the positive cases since the deaths should also be higher due to undercounting and due to the 4-6 week lag in deaths (and sometimes months before someone dies).

So I’m giving us a whole order of magnitude off on testing and that still comes in at 1%

Last week was supposed to be our toughest week, our peak week, etc but this week is worse.

Why that week? Because it was right before Easter, the first milestone thrown out there. Now it’ll be May 1st then June 1st etc. Just like it was “15 days to stop the spread” then “30 days to stop the spread.”


I’ve been saying this since March and I told my kids in March they weren’t going back to school this year. These “let’s shut down for 1 week then see” don’t fool me. Nothing about this gets better quickly. It takes a long long time to get down to small number of infected people even if we had the Re less than 1, and practically every state is still increasing with no end in sight.

i bet this is all over by end of may-early june, with most sports restarting for playoffs in june.

I think the NHL has a better chance of restarting before the NBA and MLB do. The NHL guys don’t seem to be as outspoken as the other guys are. I could see NBA and MLBers saying they don’t feel safe right now and the NHLers saying let’s go.

once the hospitals catch up with space and equipment to allow them to function, then it starts to become feasible to return to limited contact with people at your own risk.

Face it, Large gatherings are over for along time. Pro sports with out fans is laughable. Pro athletes playing while being isolated for long periods is laughable.
I don't like it, but if one athlete tests positive the season is over, again.

I predict we have pro sports as made for TV events. Golf already planning it with no crowds starting in June. (Golf prob the easiest since crowds don't make much impact anyway and social distancing is easy). Baseball likely will have some sort of half season with all teams playing and living in Arizona, with no crowds.

NBA, NFL are tougher since they are contact sports. I don't think they will be back this year.

At this point, with zero live sports on TV, people will probably watch what amounts to spring training baseball games with no fans. I know I would.

Her auburn hair brushed my cheek as we sat quietly on folding chairs in the middle of Main Street. I shivered at the touch. Removing my shirt and leaning my head back, I reached for the fine, almost imperceptible hairs on the back of her neck. Just as I began to caress her tender skin…there was a knock on the cloud above us.

“That’s weird,” I thought. “Who could be knocking on the cloud?” I removed my hand from her neck as she stood suddenly and walked into oncoming traffic. I screamed…and hit my head on the headboard of the bed I had been napping on. The knocking came again, this time more insistent. It was the front door.

I slipped my sweats over my boxers and trudged downstairs, cursing as I went, the scent of jasmine and female musk still wavering in my brain.

Peering through the small oval window in the door, I spied John from next door. “Probably out of food again. The guy can’t take care of himself in the best of times. Pandemic times seem to have rendered him incapable of tying his own shoes.

I opened the door.

“Hey, Alex, sorry to bother you again. Do you have any milk? I’ve still got cereal, but no milk. I really don’t want to go to the store right now.”

“Sure, John. Give me a second.” Turning for the kitchen, not inviting my useless neighbor in, I muttered, “Maybe you could make a list of everything you need for two weeks before you go to the store next time.”

“That’s a great idea. What do you think I would need for two weeks?”

Opening the refrigerator door, I glanced at John. His look of sincerity almost made me scream. “I’ll give you my most recent list. I have it around here somewhere.” What the ****?

Grabbing the milk and the grocery list, I headed back to the front door.

“What do you think will happen in the next few weeks?” John wanted to chat. Great. But, I wasn’t going to hold back this time. My Trump loving neighbor was going to get to hear what I really thought.

“I think we will be social distancing for a while. As we get closer to July some things will open back up. As we get into late September people will finally realize that Trump and his people really ****ed up.” John’s head cocked to the left as his lips thinned. “The second wave of the virus will be especially deadly. Everything will shut down again, and the rest of the year will be a nightmare. Hospitals all over the country will be overwhelmed with gravely ill patients. Even though they will have prepared themselves with the help of their communities and local governments, and zero help from Trump and the GOP, hundreds of thousands will die.”

John starred at me wide-eyed, not knowing what to say. He glanced at the milk and grocery list on my side of the screen door. I wasn’t quite done yet. I left the screen door locked and continued.

“Even Trump supporters will turn on Trump, his family and all his appointees and closest allies in the house and senate. The writing will be on the wall. The only real positive for the supporters of Trump will be the incredible number of, and entertainment value of the trials that will commence after the 2020 elections. So many of them have used their positions to illegally profit off their place in government, we will all be glued to the TV and internet for years. Even you are going to love the **** that comes out about what those narcissistic *******s did.”

I opened the screen door, handed John the items he needed, said, “Have a wonderful week,” with a great big smile, and then closed and locked the door, walking happily back upstairs in search of the jasmine and naked female flesh in my head.

The chance of team sports in the US this year is close to zero. Wishful thinking does not make a problem go away.

i think fall seasons will happen. they will test all players and have no public seating or distance seating. the tv rights are what it is all about for them anyway.
by then the public will be desensitized to the virus unless it flairs up with a vengeance then its crap all over again.
but by then we may be on personal responsibility and tough luck if you let it get you due to your lack of precautions..

There is too much money to be made for them not to have something sports wise. Baseball for sure happens even if its empty stadiums...NBA playoffs probably happen even if it's empty stadiums and constant testing. Especially with everyone at home, ratings would be astronomical...will probably be huge anyway, people who don't even like sports will watch just because now they can, and people watching games played in empty stadiums will become part of the zeitgeist

Australia had one round of Aussie Football with empty stadiums. Was quite a surreal experience. Australian fans aren't as proactive as European soccer fans in regards to songs and chants, but are very clued on in regards to having everyone in the stadium yelling out "BALLLLLLLLLLLL" whenever someone gets tackled while holding the football (to pay a penalty against the holding team) . Its my favourite thing to point out to Americans and Euros when watching a game with them for the first time.

That said the lack of noise was very noticeable, partially in a good way (you can hear sounds like the football off the boot, the cheers from players when they make a good play etc...) that would be accentuated in sports like the NBA (sounds of sneakers squeaking, ball on court etc.). Unfortunately, a lot of the bad things would also seep in (swearing etc...)

The Australian plan is for stadium noise when they come back via the stadium, and I assume USA will go the same way roughly one day after someone drops a few F bombs after missing a transition layup.
